You're a smart guy. Always thinking heavy. John wrote songs that showed the good and bad sides of this country. It's patriotic in some sense, but not sugar coated. He has so many great songs that deal with life and reality. I'd love to see you react to Crumbling Down, R.O.C.K. in the USA.
@Ok Sceez I consider this to be the best Song John Mellencamp has ever written because there are so many truths embodied in this song. It's very hard to write a song about Social issues and still make it Rock! Thanks for Reacting to this.
At that time we were just realizing that the American dream was failing. John Mellencamp was doing a lot of farm aid concerts trying to save family farms across the Midwest, because a lot were being foreclosed on
He is showing what America is really all about behind all the patriotism and flag-waving. But still suggesting that it's still OK to love it for all its shortcomings. Brilliant song, I think you picked up on it pretty nice. Check out "Cherry Comb" by John.
My husband went to school with John. We’ve lived in the county in Indiana. That’s been shown on this video. The last thing in the country store outside is 2 miles from where I live right now. John is a great storyteller.❤
There's a black man with a black cat Livin' in a black neighborhood He's got an interstate runnin' through his front yard… The song is a true story. The house is on the south side of Indianapolis on I-65. Mellencamp said he used to drive past and wave to the old man and the old man would wave back.
American dream is freedom, not based on money or success. Just the fact you can be happy with music, friends, family and little pink houses like many in small towns, that's America and it's great too! No complications, just happy
No place is perfect, but there are a lot of places in the world where that little pink house next to the interstate is an unattainable dream … especially when you remember that it probably has reliable electricity and clean drinking water.
To me, this song IS patriotic. We can acknowledge our country is far from perfect and still love it and be happy to live here. To me, that is patriotism
Thanks for this one. Love Mellancamps music. Met him in a little pool hall in high school. He was a fellow FFA Member and had that state chapter jacket on. They played that night. A year or two later, seen him on TV with his music wearing that jacket. Grew up 50 miles from John. Seen my family farm go like he describes Seymour too.
I thinking you are looking at it backwarrds. Maybe the real American dream should be living happily in a little pink house with the one you love . As long as you have a home, food , and loved ones you are truly blessed,
Different people have different dreams. Some people are happy with what other people would consider nothing (just a little house, peace, someone to love). Ironically a lot of wealthy people aren’t t happy with anything.
It was the destruction of the American dream he laments. John along with Willie and several others have raised millions for American farmers that were losing the family farm that had been in the family for 5 or 10 generations.
I said you were smarter than most reactors from the first one I saw, and you continually grasp what I understand to be the meaning of the song, very quickly. Most folks don’t catch the cynicism and real talk the first few times, they zero in on the pink houses. You’re dead on here.
You might check out Scarecrow and Crumblin' Down by John Melloncamp. Haven't seen anyone do those two and they're two of my favs by him. I love your unique and authentic take on all these songs you're learning!
He started out as John Cougar then became John Cougar Mellencamp and finally John Mellencamp. He was purchased young by the evil music industry as many were, and quickly rebranded himself. It was new music when we heard it and we knew what he meant. Many did not.
A good follow-up to this would be Rain on the Scarecrow It came out mid-80s when all the small famiy farms were going under and being bought by big company farms.
Love John. He lives in deepest red territory and is outspoken and to the left of Bernie Sanders. He is well placed to express social commentary since he is a ood ol' boy from the midwest but he is rich. Great reaction...you got it exactly right.
I love John’s songs. He shows us that opportunity is not necessarily equal in America. Some get a big head start while others work hard but get disillusioned due to poverty, prejudice , horrific cost of living, etc As usual, you got it right ! Smarty!😊
Then u see the old farmer....holding a pumpkin...he sees the semi drive by and the train??? Takes away his way of making living?? This song is real talk
ok here goes... first I love John Mellencamp!!!!! He has always appeared to be standing up for the "common or blue collar working man" . Please nobody take offence to my choice of words. I mean no disrespect by it. He has been involved with the "Farm Aid" festivals. He seems to be a super humble man. You hit it on the head with your reaction/interpretation of this song. Your comment really made me look at this in a true light. The old man on the porch looking like he has nothing BUT in fact what looks like nothing much to you and me, is the world for that man. He may not look like he has a life that most people wouldn't want but at least what he has,,,,,,,, IS ALL HIS!!!!!!!! Also the pictures going by with the big transport truck with a big corporation on it and the train going along, again big business. Then back to people living a very humble life. They may not have much, but they still have their own "Little Pink Houses".
Great reaction. IMO, the song Pink Houses by John Mellencamp is a critique of the American Dream. It describes a man who lives in a small, pink house in a working-class neighborhood. He has a job, a family, and a home, but he is still not happy. He is surrounded by pollution, crime, and poverty. He feels trapped and alone. The song's chorus, "Ain't that America," is a sarcastic commentary on the American Dream. The singer is asking if this is really what the American Dream is all about.
There was a little pink farm house that I would drive by on my way home. I would smile and start singing "Little pink houses." They just knocked the little house down. The whole farm is gone so they can dig for gravel... "The American Dream"--when big business wants your little pink house, they WILL take it! (Just as a casino wanted our little farm. We were pushed out.) But I have learned that "Home" is within you and your family and friends around you.
Nope you should be so proud to be an American!! And thankful to God❤🇺🇲✝️always. Or don't. Always your lost thou. American dream does work.... its all in your prospective. And be good to others always.
You're a smart guy. Always thinking heavy. John wrote songs that showed the good and bad sides of this country. It's patriotic in some sense, but not sugar coated. He has so many great songs that deal with life and reality. I'd love to see you react to Crumbling Down, R.O.C.K. in the USA.
Your right thats exactly what means the American Dream passed most of us by!!!!
@Ok Sceez I consider this to be the best Song John Mellencamp has ever written because there are so many truths embodied in this song. It's very hard to write a song about Social issues and still make it Rock! Thanks for Reacting to this.
You have great insight . Your take is spot on.
Love this song. Love John Cougar Mellencamp. Thank you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Usually it takes people much longer to get the meaning, if they ever do. Well done.
Gr8 reaction Sceezo. Your insight made me appreciate this song more than back in the day.
Shit hell, Sceez, I just love your reactions!
My husband went to school with John. We’ve lived in the county in Indiana. That’s been shown on this video. The last thing in the country store outside is 2 miles from where I live right now. John is a great storyteller.❤

Great reaction as always Cuzo..❤
I'm disabled, my husband works in a factory. We live in a rural town with 500 people. We don't have much money but we are happy af ❤😊
As my uncle (who did two tours with the Marines in Vietnam) told me years ago, “Don’t forget happy.”
There's a black man with a black cat
Livin' in a black neighborhood
He's got an interstate runnin' through his front yard…

Love your reactions. You speak facts from the heart. Nice reaction and commentary bro❤
My parents grew up in the 80s. He was their favorite singer. They had all his records. I know all the songs too.
Great reaction.🤘🤘🤘
Shit hell. You got it. The American dream may just mean getting by.
Good take, man. You got a solid perspective. I watch for that. Lots of folks miss the things you hit.
🖤🖤

Your take on this song was very accurate.

You nailed the meaning of the song.

He has so made great songs but this one and Hurt So Good are my favorites!❤
For some reason the way he looks I always thought he was blind, and that the line was “living in a blind man’s world.”
I can't remember the last time I heard john Cougar Melon camp I used to really love him and His Music he has a nice sound❤❤❤

Being true and real...love the vibe bro!🎶 🎵 🔥
Ya know what? I never looked at this song any other way than patriotic until I heard your interpretation. I agree with you.
He's singing about small town America. He is from a small town and wants to be buried there when the time comes
Great song!!!!!
VOLUME!!!!
So good! Gotta ck out paper and fire😊😊😊😊😊😊

Great reaction Skeez-Loved this song back when it was in regular rotation on the radio, all these years later i love it even more- deep stuff❤
Rain on the Scarecrow, Minutes to Memories and Rumble Seat are also great JCM tunes worth checking out.
John always sings about common, working class folk.
😎😎
Listen to anything from the Scarecrow album and you will see more of what he saw and felt.
America with its flaws is still the best place to live in terms of freedom.

a few people live in ivory towers (with golden toilets) but it's little pink houses for you and me...
He’s touring now. YOU NEED TO SEE HIM LIVE WHILE YOU STILL CAN.
Then u see the old farmer....holding a pumpkin...he sees the semi drive by and the train??? Takes away his way of making living?? This song is real talk
The "American dream" you have to be asleep to believe it!

Great choice y'all!!!!
Check out his “Small Town”. Hits home.
He did that one a couple of weeks ago 👍🏼
America. You give them the power to feed you, you gave them the power to starve you.
Sceez, try The Kinks Shangri-la Ray Davies lays out how the dream works for most of us.
This IS THE GOOD SIDE OF AMERICA. that's the point.
Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen is another song like this. I’ll let you interpret as you see it.
Trigger by chinchilla and genesis by ren and waterman by userx/matt maeson and rozwell
Nice precipitation
You should follow this with Springsteen's born in the USA

Yes it is. How to people miss praise of the " working class?"
John Cougar?
Question The American dream?
Never.

One should not talk longer than the actual song.
You came nowhere close to what that song is about.
crumbling down and cry baby needs reviewing for good measure
