  • Unfortunately today we have to share of a tragedy that occurred on the farm. After that, we are working on some early spring jobs, including moving the young cattle to their new pasture, fixing fences, and getting ready to start plowing! Jim also explains how to hitch up three horses together for plowing.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Jim you might want to bring some extra rope with you when you get out ploughing, that piece that you are using to raise the plow looks very very suspect. I would hate to see you get a couple of miles away from the home and have it break. Love your video's.

I think Whitey should be spayed . That way she could be a good mouser for the barn and not be attracting male cats. What do you think ?

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim Just like a pride of lions when a new male comes in he will kill all the existing cubs so the females will come into heat and he can pass along his genes. Next time move them to a safe place like a box in your house or something.

Often if you spay barn cats any male that comes around thinks it's another male and fights and injures the female. We always had to bring the spay females inside and they became house cats as any intact males really harmed them.

I'm Back! I watch your channel more than television, or any other, and learn so much. I also enjoy your logging and farming videos above any other. I am also pleased that you take one day in seven as a day of rest. My day of rest is Jesus' Sabbath, Saturday,
but each of us has to decide which day is actually the Seventh Day. Not only do you and your family save a day to rest yourselves, but, also your horses, and that pleases God, I'm sure. Maybe that's why I take to your channel more than others.
I've said before, and will probably say again, that I'm a frustrated farmer with a strong desire to own Draft horses. I hope you continue this channel on UA-cam until I'm older and maybe even, gone. Thank you so much.

Poor Kitty. Prayers for Kitty's family. RIP Kitty.
It is difficult for business as usual when a family member passes. I have buried four bird hunting dogs in my hunting career. When the last one passed, my best friend and best hunter, a small German Short-haired female named Brandy, sensitive, well mannered and a fine pointing dog. She worked slow and close which was important for ruffled grouse and woodcock in the Michigan grouse coverts and woodcock lowlands. She was solid on point and worked slow which was essential for hunting the thick stuff and 15 to 20 acre popular stands. She retired at almost 14 years of age and I had to have her put to sleep three years later when the vet said she was in pain. I have her ashes in a small container waiting for mine. Then my soul mate has promised she will mix my ashes with Brandy's and spread them in a couple of remote and secret hunting spots in Northern Michigan and one special spot in Michigan's Upper Peninsula so my hunting partner and I may return to and become part of those places where we found the most peace. I have the latitude and longitude coordinates recorded so if my soul mates wishes to join us when her time comes, her daughter has promised to take her ashes and spread them in the exact same location if she so desires to join us. Yes I understand your sad event. I hope the four kittens went quickly and did not suffer.
My condolences to you and your family.
    ✌🙏🏼❤🖖

You make a complicated hook up a bit easier to understand. We have a few Amish farmers in the area and I watched a young fellow of about 30 years of age plowing with a 6 horse hitch pulling a two bottomed plow. One of the Belgians was being trained although I couldn't see any difference in any one's performance. They seem to know exactly where to turn at the end of the furrow, stepped neatly around with little comment and knew exactly how to make the turn from the headland into the furrow without any coaching the plow being lined up perfectly. It was a beautiful sight. I love to watch those big heavies go about their work.
Looking forward to the next video.
My condolences to you.your family and Mother Cat. Those of us who grew up on a farm are conditioned to deal with unfortunate events however it is never pleasant.ife goes on and the work must be completed whether one is sad or not, eh.
    Be safe.
    Live long and prosper.

Question?? I know nothing about horses and find what your doing fascinating. That big thing you put over the heads of the horses, I guess it's what the horse pushes against. There are two what I would call horns that stick up that has round silver balls on them. They stick up I think about 8 to 10 inches. What are they? What's it used for?? Maybe you could talk about it in one of your video's. It's something how you talk to your horses. lets see if I got it right. gee = right, ha = left, step = go forward, easy step = slow forward, ba = back up, ho = stop. ( What? no get-e-up) 🙂

That is called the collar. The 2 wooden pieces are the Hames, and are what the traces are attached to. The Hames are what take the weight of the load, and the collar keeps the big beasties from tearing up their shoulders against the Hames.

... hmm, last time since corn picking. If they remember they might be suspicious that it will be a hard day's work. Hope that this little walk swept that concern.

For those who don’t know, you don’t plow when the ground is wet because the dirt will end up in big dirt clods which are hard to break up later. I asked my parents years ago and they grew up on farms on continued to have gardens even with small gas tillers.

Jim,you are not the only farmer wanting to get out in the field 🙄. Here in the upper Midwest we are a least 😐 two weeks behind and wet weather is coming this next week. Brenda I know living with a farmer that is behind getting into the fields 😳 is no fun.Just ask my wife!! We are off the farm but I am not happy with this spring weather 😑 also. Sorry about your kittens 😸 too.You may have two tom cats 🐈 around. They will kill kittens that are from another male cat. Farming is all about life and death. Sounds rough 😕 but that's the way it is!! Hope that spring gets it's act together and field work starts for all farmers behind getting crops in the ground. Thanks 😊.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your kittens, when I farmed I had raccoons get into my hay mow , it was a hay mow , I hadn't started to take hay out of yet ,I had kittens get killed in the hay loft ,.I think the raccoons did it , I set some traps and removed them ,when I discovered them in the barn.

Last fall I got rid of a 2 furrow P.& O. trip plow, on rubber with a rubber tire tail wheel. I hadn't used it in 10 years, so it was time to unload it. Too bad about the kittens. :(

Some nice looking pine logs you have there. Nice piles. . I have heard of fawns being abandoned due to human handling with wild deer. But with your kittens, I think your Theory makes the most sence. Enough about cats , ah ha.😄 Let's talk horses, I Was trying to follow you on the lines attachment, the laying of lines on the ground was best as less confusing. I guess the goal pull left go left pull right go right pull both to stop or slow, still applies but the outer left line to the left most bit...the outer right line to the right most bit.
And the middle may be bit to left horse and right bit to right horse. I have to watch it again as I confused myself a little. Good patience Jim waiting to plow, I know that's hard.
I recommend plowing the dry ground 1st then wet later , but...differant with horses.
Let us know how you do it. You are in a good position to make that call. :-)

How is that horse shoe doing? , the one caught in the mud? All better?
When I was little we had a plow just like the one you cut. Modified.. nice easy touch on the corn crib, a wide base footing and some cross bracing and it will be good for another year, I like that ole crib. :-)

Toms will do that, especially if they haven't bred the queen, in order to bring her back into heat. So you may have a couple of tomcats around. Strangely enough, they will also kill the Mom if she fights back. I've had that happen more than once, when there were several toms in the area. (They have about a five mile radius that they travel.) So sorry this happened. Blessings to all.

I'm sorry to hear about the kittens. I've been binge watching your videos because I want the farm life for myself and you're videos' have helped a lot. I have a question, I saw a video of yours and one of the horses (3 were droving) fell over while working in the field. Why do you need to get them up as soon as possible? There was a comment from Jim that he said its similar to cows. I'm familiar with horses, specifically Arabians. So this made me curious.
