Lighting night time scenes is tricky, but fortunately, with the help of decades of cinematography tricks to work with, we can break down how movies are lit, and apply those tricks to our own 3D environments. The fundamentals are the same, so it doesn't really matter which renderer you're using. I want to clarify that there are HUNDREDS of ways to light things, and this is only one way to do that. Feel free to share your own approach in the comments!
You'll soon realize that moonlight is a fickle beast, but it can be tamed, and faking it, tricking the audience into believing something through good lighting is key.

Of course, UE5 Preview was released THE DAY I upload this video, which addresses some of my concerns I had about using UE5 at the time of recording this tutorial. Please disregard what I said about UE5 and foliage *sigh*.
Yeah, was curious, about when you will discover UE5s release ^.^ Preview also have this interesting looking feature of Local Exposure in the Post Process Volume, that seems to help for cases, where you have really bright and really dark places in the same frame (like outside looking into a darker room or cave).
Would love to see a part 2of this video, using the new UE5 preview.
Is this preview like a new version of UE5? I saw the article in the EG launcher but nothing to download : )) I am so lost in this UE universe, used to Houdini's version installs and content.
@@karolinasereikaite8233 You need to go to the epic launcher, go to library, click the + to add a new version, then choose which version you want to install. The reason its so convoluted is that it’s just a preview build, not an official final build
@@WilliamFaucher thank you, oh silly me! yes, downloading :) is it safe to move my project from early access2 to preview1? or just copy it somehow m? Thanks!
Goodness. This was masterfully art directed William! Thank you so much for these tutorials!
Thanks so much, Clint! ❤️
You both are inspiration for many, cheers!
Pure gold. Keep applying the “cinematographer play book” to Unreal Engine.
Thank you! Will do :)
Even when I feel like I already have a fairly decent understanding of what's going to be covered in the vid, I still end up learning so much. I'll definitely be sharing this video around with people when they ask about lighting, there's some fantastic stuff in here!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it! :)
Was just thinking about you this morning! I learned how to get battlefront models and I can not figure out how to get materials to look good. Do you have any tutorials or plan on making any? I wanna make stuff like your starwars videos
@@ECAKJ join the Star Wars battlefront modding discord, someone there will let you know. That’s how I learned
@@urmcchromez9426 thanks! I’ll see if I can find ir
@@ECAKJ no problem, I wouldn’t even ask CC ^ he never ever responds to any comment I’ve left for him tbh. Best of luck !
Not only are you one of the few people making content at the intersection of film and UE, you do an amazing job of it. Lighting is one of the things I’ve been working hardest on (both real time and cinematic renders) and all your tutorials have been invaluable. Thank you so much for what you do, I’m excited to see what amazing things you can do in UE5, cheers!
Man, thanks a lot for making tutorials. I've studied in a film school but they've taught me less about the lighting than you did in this tutorial. Your renders are so cinematic, I'm trying my best to achieve results similar to yours! Can't wait for your color grading video
I cannot stress enough how important it is to have some understanding of the basic principles to get good results. This is a fantastic video. Thank you so much!
I love the extra info you happen to give us during those tutorials. it's interesting to know that light bounced by moon is actually warm. Anyway great tutorial, as always!
I don't often enjoy tutorials. I do enjoy these! You're an excellent teacher!
Woah! I always expect tons and tons of value from each of your videos, but you always somehow deliver even more than expected!! seriously people, this is some premium knolledge ✨✨✨
Great video, William! I noticed that you used the details panel to move a few objects in the scene - in case you didn't know, you can also move objects without clicking the transform gizmo by clicking and dragging in the viewport: Ctrl + LMB (X-axis), Ctrl + RMB (Y-axis), Ctrl + LMB + RMB (Z-axis). This also works for rotating and scaling. It takes some time to get used to, but I've found it to be super useful when moving objects while looking through a locked camera. I never click the gizmo anymore :D
Holy shit thank you for this
Right when I was struggling with lighting a night time exterior I remembered this video. Thanks for putting your masterful work out there.
William your tutorials are lit :D but jokes aside amazing job man! I watch and rewatch everything you upload! Real gold information and professional presentation. Love it!
Very useful and very professional. I didn't find such this tutorial anywhere but here about lighting at the night in UE.
I am kicking myself so hard right now because I watch a lot of your content and somehow I managed to miss this video. Needless to say this month I did a blockmesh assignment for school, where I ended up doing a night scene and completely winged it, but I am so glad I found this video you always have such wonderful and informative content.
everytime i watched ur tutorial, my respect grow stronger towards you :) thanks for making so many educating videos
Getting a new PC early April, I can't wait to apply what I've learned with your content to VFX work. Thanks William, you're a legend.
Oh congrats on the new PC! Go make some dope art!
@@WilliamFaucher Thanks man, I will.
This is an invaluable tutorial in cinematographic night time lighting! Thank you so much for it.
This Video is a goddamn MASTERCLASS in cinematography. This is like top tier film school stuff which William is providing for free. Thank You so much, Mr. Faucher. We really appreciate it.
OMG, This was amazing. You made my day when you said "no RTX required," because I had to send my RTX rig for repair, and I'm using my spare, with only a 1070. I can't wait to try this tonight! *Thank you* for another awesome tutorial, and looking forward to the DR one!
Cheers! Happy it helped!
I am switching from Blender to U5 and I already know that I will learn a lot from you, concretely explained everything. Thank you! :D
This was such a good video! Lots of great tricks I didn’t know about
Thanks for taking the time to share your techniques and experiences with us. You've high quality vids are great!
Thank you!
Excellent video. I i love that CGI is good enough that the massive volume of experience in real world lighting applies to even real-time now.
Thank you so much for this video! Been getting back into Unreal lately and your channel is a treasure trove of knowledge
Hey Will! The video is great! This is just about everything I need to finish my project! I'll show you what I'm up to next tuesday😁
This is really cool! Thanks for sharing! Lighting seems like a simple thing, but so very hard to get right.
Thank you so much ....... I'm overwhelmed by the VALUE!
Dude you answered like alot of my question which i havent find found anywhere!! And answered them on fyi sentences! Keep up the epic work!!!
Hey there! Happy to help!
I learned of the reddish moonlight in James Gurney's Color and Light book and was very intrigued of the effect. At the time I distinctly remember a week or so after a night out/early morning surfing that set the countryside in a deep blue tint. Also always glad to see a new video, I pick up a bunch of stuff always!! Thanks for the great work
Light is super fascinating, between our eyes screwing us over and lying to us , and actual environmental effects that affect color as well, its hard to know what to trust!
i learn SO much every time you drop a video... thanks times a million
Love it! Thanks again William. Would love to see real-time fire lighting on assets and characters from a cinematic perspective in the future, just as an idea !
Great suggestion!
Thanks man, i'm photographer and begining with video and here there is a lot of good stuff aplicable.
The hack with a “window” is so simple and so good in a result! Thank you for sharing all those cool things❤
Big Thank you! for this comprehensive tutorial about cinematic lighting. Especially on behalf of all of us that still can't seem to get our hands on a RTX card :)
you never disappoint when it comes to UE tutorials and good information about the topics
I very rarely comment, but wanted to say thank you for all your tutorials and help. They have all really helped guide me in the right direction.
William, thank you so much for this video! Amazing
Insane that I just learned this for free. Thank you for this tutorial! This will make my scenes much better.
Great presentation of Design basics and beautiful lighting - inside a clunky UE environment ;) Thx William!
Honestly, this channel has helped me even more than some paid tutorials have. Thank you for sharing!
The only channel I don't fast forward or skip. Thank you!
You're the best
This is fantastic, only just recently looked at it but has given me some really useful techniques for a production job. You seem to have an uncanny knack of knowing what the people need! 😁
This was awesome. Best information about night Lighting.
I can just say awesome! very useful. thanx for sharing your knowledge . I wish to see a series of tut about material .
Hey William, this is why I watch your stuff. You just read my mind and do a video on what I need lol. Interesting on the first 5.0 UE release today, i'm sure you will be already using it by now. I've not really used it and kept to 4.27 for Cinematic stuff but seems they have made some progress on this now. Downloading it now. Thanks.
Amazing! Thank you for this. I'm about 95% done with my shot, and this will help me finish it 💪 I very much appreciate you 😊
Had a gret result here. Love you, man! All the best!

Hi William, thank you very much for this tutorial. So many very useful things...K
Thanks! Great! This took me back to my film school days!
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 This type of teaching makes learning fun.
I never thought about that with the moon and how much brighter the sun is than it, but totally makes sense, since we can look at the moon and even make out details on it.
This was great William. Thank you!
Gotta love future Will, always saving the day.
Hahha I recorded that bit literally 1 hour before the video was uploaded!
I was just sitting down to light a night shot, this is impeccable timing!
