What is so awesome about REM, is that every time you havent heard one of their songs for a while, when you do hear it, you realise all over again, just how wonderful it is.
I completely agree! I could listen to REM for the rest of my life and never get bored because their songs are all so varied! I was born in the early 2000s but this is my kind of music.

R.E.M.’s “Electrolite” (1996) is a hymn to the concept of Los Angeles representing SURFACE LUSTER and INNER EMPTINESS. Michael Stipe stated : “The title of the song references what I’d refer to as ELECTROLYTE BLANKET, looking out at Los Angeles at night from the hills, or looking down from an airplane. The idea that, particularly in the American West, if you took a giant universe-sized steam shovel and just scraped away the surface of the place, all that would be left is earth. Our impact is actually quite shallow. LA represents that very well as a relatively new place, as the last place to be colonized in America. But also as somewhere that represents hope.” 💜💫💙

OK, 2 things - I'm an REM superfan since the 80s and this is the first time I'm seeing this! 2nd thing is that I think this is the closest they ever came to being the Monkees.
some days life seems like a dream and that i already died long ago. delusion or not it means something to me thinking OMG it's already 2019. Life seems like a dream as if I already passed into the spirit world.
Like a eulogy for the 20th century. All the advances it brought and the terrible wars and loss of personal identity that came with them. But ultimately it ends with the message to keep going and celebrate the good things in life. The whole album is kind of like that actually, but this one in particular.
I'm drinking my Electrolytes, Lemon-Lime Gatorade while listening to this 1996 classic. What a great song. It's an omage to everything Hollywood and entertainment, a thumbs up to the legends who made it what it is. Electrolite you're out of sight.
I once had a 15 minute conversation with the lead singer of Belle and Sebastian (Stuart Murdoch) about REM and failed to mention this song. Great conversation, missed opportunity.
I'm listening to this while drinking my Electrolytes ( Gatorade Lemon-Lime) on a hot summer day, July 9th 2024. This tribute to the legends of cinema and TV from 1996. It's as good as it was then, a release of their New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Electrolite, you're out of sight.

My girlfriend used to work in Malibu and we lived in Woodland Hills. I used to pick her up from work at night, driving through the canyons, a few miles down the mountain range from Mullholland Drive. This song was always playing on KLOS around this time and always seemed to come on when I'd do that drive, looking down over Hollywood just like the song. That was a bittersweet time, going through adult things for the first time, not knowing what to make of anything. The point to the story is that I didn't even know there was a video to this song. I watched a few seconds and immediately felt it ruin the song for me in real time. Videos apparently were a bad idea.
The last words on the last song on the last album with Bill Berry: "I'm outta here"! What a finish to the best song on the album by far!

If I ever want to fly
Mulholland Drive
I am alive
Hollywood is under me
I'm Martin Sheen
I'm Steve McQueen
I'm Jimmy Dean
You are the star tonight
Your sun electric, outta sight
Your light eclipsed the moon tonight
Electrolite
You're outta sight
If you ever want to fly
Mulholland Drive
Up in the sky
Stand on a cliff and look down there
Don't be scared, you are alive
You are alive
You are the star tonight
Your sun electric, outta sight
Your light eclipsed the moon tonight
Electrolite
You're outta sight
Twentieth century, go to sleep
Really deep
We won't blink
Your eyes are burning holes through me
I'm not scared
I'm outta here
I'm not scared
I'm outta here
Beautiful song, hella fun video, one of the greatest bands to ever do it, certainly my favourite
The song itself makes me feel that. Which is hugely why I can't stand this and indie music in general.
Still watching in August 2019...a song that ages like a fine wine and a video that just reminds you of the joy that these 4 beautiful guys brought to all our live ...”your eyes are burning holes through me, I’m not scared, I’m out of here, I’m not scared, I’M OUTTA HERE”
OK, 2 things - I'm an REM superfan since the 80s and this is the first time I'm seeing this! 2nd thing is that I think this is the closest they ever came to being the Monkees.
So, so beautiful! Just love yourselves no matter what!
@Shedrach morrison
Just saw a R.E.M. tribute band last night and it reminded me just how beautiful this song is.

Yo igual los amo y lo amo
REM, love the melancholy hopefullness..."You are alive.... Electrolite... You're outta sight..."
some days life seems like a dream and that i already died long ago. delusion or not it means something to me thinking OMG it's already 2019. Life seems like a dream as if I already passed into the spirit world.
I'm not scared, I'm out of here.
Beutiful song and the video is very imaginative too. I love it. A typical ending song.
Vajda Veronika Yeah, when music videos were a piece of art.
I love this band! They're great live!
That's how greatness sounds.
לא תהיה עוד מוסיקה כזאת. להקה מעולם אחר.

we are yet to hear awesomeness and the best is yet to come.
I wish mtv is still a music channel
Absolutely brilliant song
If you ever want to fly...Mulholland Drive... ha! I live near Mulholland. Best road in LA. This is my favorite REM song too.
UNIQUE R.E.M. FOREVER
great thanks to this channel of Utube, its a pleasure to watch
Everytime I hear R.E.M song is like listening 1st time to some amazing top hit released just now
I once had a 15 minute conversation with the lead singer of Belle and Sebastian (Stuart Murdoch) about REM and failed to mention this song.
Vidéo et musique extraordinaires! La vie et sa sublimation... C´est beau! R.E.M., un grand de chez les grands de la musique pop-rock!
So beautiful it makes you glad to be alive
sempre escuto REM quando estou depre.
amo
1:23 - Shame they never published the complete version:

Hahahahahaha...
I sang these lines to the melody of Great Beyond and I think that made it better
Eu ia assistir eles no Rock in Rio quando vieram aqui , minha filha nasceu no mesmo dia..pois é , amo !!

R.E.M how i miss you , now you 're a legend , the legend of athens .
There is something about REM that's so relaxing.Really I never need a drink because of this band!
I LOVE every song on this album!
