As a English folk song lover since young in CHINA, I cant tell you why I love English folk songs even I come from a vast different culture. They just sound so beautiful to me!! So beautiful! maybe the same feeling as you listen to out traditional music. :) maybe there is no why just go with it!
Brilliant, we need more of this and less of the noise masquerading as music. I would stay on my high horse but this music is so disarming! Never give this up, If I ever acquire the means to have you sing at a large scale event be sure to give me a reminder.
I know! isn't it fantastic how these survive? I love to hear of old traditions from the various parts of the British Isles and elsewhere- for that matter! There seems to be a deep need in people the world over to keep these customs/traditions alive.
Beautifully sung! There's a tenderness, passion, sweetness, sorrow, joy, and humanness in the songs of those who came before, which is sorely lacking in much modern music. Am grateful that it's still appreciated and performed.
What a talent ,what a beautiful gift you have Corinne ,to be able to sing so beautifully it isnt every day that thru utube I stumble upon a jewel such as this . Well done, the world is a sweeter place .
There are plenty of 19th and early 20th century songs in Bengali, whose tunes were inspired by Irish and English folk songs and most Bengalis don't even know or realize this. That should give you an idea about how close music often can be. I find folk music from both Britain and Ireland beautiful because of their simplicity and themes. A young man meeting a woman herding sheep is very similar to the Bengali folk songs of fishermen meeting beautiful maidens on river banks where they fish.
@Stuart Aitken hey mate..its so nice to read about you feelings..you know.. music is the universal language which justifies that we all are equal. all are elements of nature..hearing folk music from various lands also makes me have the same feeling as you do..I am from India.. and folk music from England and the Celtic lands also enchants me..I love them so much..the mysticism involved is amazing..:) by the way I would be really happy to see you you tube name changed peace and love to all!! :)
@seaxwielder Maypole dancing. Yes we did. I grew up in Malton in North Yorkshire. We had Maypole dancing in junior school. I must confess, I wasn't very good at it..I used to get confused and the ribbons would end up in the wrong place. We also had country dancing classes every week. Strip the willow and all that! I feel very privileged to have had that kind of upbringing.
@RobertBeowulf Hi- Thanks for your encouragement. I really appreciate it. I Love to sing and folk music bit me when I was a child. I didn't know it was folk at the time, I just know I loved the songs and the singers.
Hi there. Thank you so much for commenting. It is a beautiful song. Lovely lyrics and a beautiful tune. A good one to learn and I hope you do! We are very lucky to have such fine traditional songs as this but we haven't always made the best of them. Folk music is enjoying a huge revival here in Britain though, and now everyone wants to get in on it. Even the most unlikely bands and singers! Corinne :)
I am currently recovering from a small vocal strain so not singing for the moment but when i recover tommorow I shall definately start learning it. I am very passionateabout my art and when I'm told to rest my voice it almost makes me cry
@seaxwielder Thank you. Do you remember Spanish Maidens, On yonder hill, The grey Goose, Oh Soldier Soldier. They were all in the same book. Most of them were also watered down versions, but still gave us a taste of folk music, which set the seeds for later interest.
Hi. I'm not sure how other cultures receive it. Often, there is a common sound or theme in folk music. I'm interested too in how some songs from vastly different cultures have a similar sound to songs from ours. There must be either links in culture, or perhaps a deepy ingrained - inherent human link that connects what we find pleasing and desirable to the ear and other senses?
Awesome, cool reply! Don't worry, I don't hate anyone, it was just the name of a band I was in when I was 16. We didn't even write any songs, hah. Someone offered me money because they wanted to buy my youtube name from me, so I now I refuse to change it, haha!
Thank you for your positive comment. It's much appreciated. I love Scottish folk music too. Jean Redpath particularly and Lizzie Higgens who I discovered through visiting Balnain House in Inverness are great sources of traditional songs for me. More contemporary singers include Eddie Reader and Barbara Dickson - fantastic!
Being British myself, I hear this and it sounds somewhat normal. I'm really interested to know how international people receive it, particularly those from places with vastly different histories such as China, India and the middle-east. When I hear traditional music from their countries I find it to be such an awe-inspiring curiosity. I wonder if international listeners feel exactly the same about this? I imagine so, but I guess I'll never know!
Mid 18th century - noted fairly regularly in England by the Victorian and Edwardian folk song collectors and a few times in Scotland and Canada but not elsewhere.
@CorinneClose2u Hello, would you be so kind as to recommend some music to me, that is like this. Not so much with instruments, but more so focused on the female voice? it would be appreciated.
She does, but that doesn't mean no-one else can sing it. I have sung it in folk song clubs and singarounds it is just such a haunting song. So sad yes, but you will find if you sing it once, there will be no going back. Your voice is perfect. Honestly.
@seaxwielder Yes I remember singing quite a few traditional folk songs at junior school too. We had a book calles "singing together" which was used along with a radio programme! Your comment is very much appreciated-thank you.
I will forever be proud to be English and my people's history ❤️🏴🇬🇧💂🏰⛪👑📮✝️
Lovely English song, so gentle and beautifully sung.

Same and I am latina. I also love ancient chinese culture and music
English female voices are unique and they enter in the heart.
Thank you for your lovely comment
That would be 'British', because Irish and Welsh Female voices on Folk are also beautiful.
@@YRTEverything Right observation! Also, Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Celtic folk in general is wonderful and despite being Italian I love it very much.
@@ribeca100
'Celtic folk' - what would that be?
Greetings from Mexico!
We love the cultural legacy of the great England!
I recommend Sandy Denny - the greatest English folk singer... Green Grow the Laurels, No End, Who Knows Where the Time Goes? ... I could go on...
Send us some coke pablo

Makes me proud of my country - an grateful I don't live in a Muslim country where a woman wouldn't have any right to sing any song !
Quiet and WoW!
very lovely song thank you fore putting this on very nice
International listener hear, and I feel the same awe with English folk songs that you hear from those other cultures.
So proud to be ENGLISH

I can't believe I've only just found this, your voice is beautiful.
Beautifully sung! There's a tenderness, passion, sweetness, sorrow, joy, and humanness in the songs of those who came before, which is sorely lacking in much modern music. Am grateful that it's still appreciated and performed.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The traditional songs are truly a pleasure to sing.

The wife and I will be covering this at a folk night here in Dorset on the 7th of next month.
Hello
No I'm English. It's interesting how when you listen to folk music from other countries, there are often very familiar sounds.
perfect
We will be doing this song at a small gig this Thursday coming:)
I love being English :D
Absolutely stunning! 💕
Thank you!
Corinne Coles
You are welcome 💟
That was beautiful. You're very talented. :)
that first painting is a depiction of an Irish girl... But it's a nice painting. Nice video.
I once heard that this was the original tune to 'The Lord's my Shepherd' - anyone?
Learning these traditional songs. So beaut :D

Abigail Barletta I can imagine. When I've had a sore throat, not singing is a big upset to me! Hope you are recovered soon. :)
So glad you enjoyed this. I love this song. Corinne X
@seaxwielder Thank you.
Do you remember Spanish Maidens, On yonder hill, The grey Goose, Oh Soldier Soldier. They were all in the same book. Most of them were also watered down versions, but still gave us a taste of folk music, which set the seeds for later interest.
More please
this would make a cute duet

Hi
I'm not really sure what you mean they should not be sung as a poem? Do you mean they should not be sung unaccompanied?
Thank you for your positive comment. It's much appreciated. I love Scottish folk music too. Not one dislike is very accurate
You have a lovely voice. I'd love to hear you sing Loreena McKennit's "The Highwayman" It would suit you.
Thank you very much. I have just listened to your suggestion on youtube. A lovely song and oh how sad! I may try it but she sings it so beautifully.
