    I have been using it for a little while and it’s surprisingly responsive. I also bought a iPad Pro instead of a laptop. It’s a very powerful little machine. Thanks for the insights, I’m new to video editing I’d love to see you guys do more tutorials on workflow. Thanks!

    Fantastic program.
    One thing I wish LumaFusion had is information for each button as you hover over,
    that way if you are new to the program you can navigate easier.
    I haven’t used my MacBook Pro since I got my iPad Pro.

    It's all changed. I started using an iPad as a laptop replacement over 5 years ago. It was far more difficult back then and has come such a long way.
    Been using LF for over a year as my only editor.

    Adding on to what Doc Rock said, if you are using a Sony A series, you can not import files over 4.3 GB directly. It is a limitation of the MTP protocol. You will need to use an external drive like the one he is using in the video.
    Besides that limitation the iPad Pro/Sony A7III combination is pretty awesome.

    Well, I think your prayers have been answered with iOS 13 and iPad iOS
    I ditched my MacBook Pro for the iPad Pro perfectly fits my workflow, it’s a great alternative to a heavy MacBook.

The goal is to deliver content as fast a possible when needed but I will not change my main edits from Premiere to the iPad. RUSH from Adobe was a „no go“ for now as all main tools are still missing. But this will be an interesting solution, if Adobe is willing to give us more pro tools. We will see

      Good afternoon, help please understand this. When you select a file on a wireless WD disk in a preview in Luma Fusion and select a part of the video that will be needed to edit the file from the wireless WD disk is copied to the iPad in full size or is only the selected part? Can you look in the Luma Fusion folder where media files are stored in the User Media folder? In the Luma Fusion folder on your iPad are files with the original size or cropped? Thank!

      that sounds interesting but I heard of some troubles with the drive. A rumor says that they will come out soon with a new drive. Didn´t get my hands on it yet. I saw a video with a workaround. Apple needs to read a special folder structure and filenames with 8 digits. So I guess it could be solved with software - maybe an app like they already exist, but this time reaction to the usb-c Port. This would help a lot as you do not need a heavy battery in the drive. Just a small one to support the power needs of the drive when working.

    Excellent video! I have the first generation iPad Pro and even after two years, is incredibly powerful. It's my daily driver. As a photographer, I'm happy that Adobe Lightroom on the iPad is finally becoming a real useful tool. Its taken a while but they're doing a good job on it. If you have lots of files to edit, doing it on a laptop is still better. But if you just have a few, the iPad can totally do it.

    Nice overview. Agree with other comments that LumaFusion is an amazing piece of software. One correction: when retrieving clips from the WD MyPassport Pro, the entire file must be downloaded to the iPad. Gnarbox, on the other hand, downloads ONLY the selected portion of the file! I have the MyPassport and it works fine, albeit slowly. I’ve ordered the Gnarbox 2.0.

    Using a WiFi hard drive is much slower compared to USB 3 connection (like the WD here which uses Samba for file transfer which is utterly slow in iOS). Furthermore, all the clips have to be uploaded to the editing device itself, just as mentioned here. If you have multiple projects going on at the same time it fills up the storage space pretty fast. Also, you cannot render a video in LumaFusion first and upload it at a later point (at least last time I checked it), nor you can render/upload videos on the background. In my opinion LumaFusion & iPad combo works mainly for short videos when you have access to a reasonable fast internet connection. As good as it is bearing mind those limitations (and many others such as not able to do exact audio track syncing, not to speak of more demanding editing tasks like stabilisation or professional level color correction) it definitely is not a replacement for a fully featured video editing software such as Premiere and powerful laptop / desktop computer.

    • @tomboard
      @tomboard 5 років тому

      I'm also waiting for the LumaFusion upgrade that brings export XML functionality: it's coming... but they've been promising this for months! The first version will export to FCPX as I understand it, which is what I use for editing. That will be a fantastic combination when it comes.

  • @jhalscott
    @jhalscott 4 роки тому

    It's not quite there, but in a few years it may be able to replace a Mac. Lumafusion needs automatic audio syncing and multicam like Premiere Pro. The iPad Pro needs to support external drives and have a better internal file system. I'd say it's about 80% there though.

  • @torrente1975
    @torrente1975 5 років тому +1

    Everyone who watched this video are interested in the option of editing on an iPad instead of a laptop. And I have to say that it is promise, but at certain point. Because only works for light editing at the moment, and without a proper OS always being problems with codecs or files, and the lack of connectivity is a major problem for any real mobile workstation. And what about the longevity of the system, I personally argue that iPads don’t last long enough compared with an apple laptop. And this package cost much more than a MacBook 12”or 13” , that are very portable and have enough power for this kind of editing and more. Only the lack of touch interface that it’s the real hype here.
    But it’s you have a lot of gigs, probably it’s easy to consider this kind of workflow at this price range.

      Allan Sh Looks like I need to upgrade my late 2015 iMac for my new XT-3... would the newest iMacs handle 4K60P XT-3 HEVC footage or do I need the newest MacBook Pro?

      The lasted iMac is 2 yo at this point. And it really struggled with HEVC. It might do better in Mojave, but I am not sure. I sold my iMac 5K last summer and replaced with a 13 inch MacBook Pro + eGPU. The 13 inch can playback 4K60P HEVC with very little CPU usage, but once you add any color layers, it starts to struggle(that's why I use eGPU). A 15 inch would do it nicely without eGPU. You might also want to check out iMac Pro. It doesn't have hardware acceleration for HEVC, but it can decode with brute force. However, iMac Pro is too expensive, and worse, it will be replaced by much better display and computer very soon. For me, I am holding on to my current setup until Apple's Pro 6K(likely HDR) + new Mac Pro come out.
      You have another option. You can buy a Atomos Ninja V in order to record ProRes. But be ware of the choice and the cost of SSDs.

    I want to shoot a 4:30 mins short film on a Nikon d5600 in 1080p on a flat picture profile. I'm going to edit and colour it myself. Can the iPad pro handle that?

      That iPad can handle 4K H265 and you are asking if it can handle 1080p vido wich is from 2010...

    you could also attach an external monitor to have a larger display.

    I am really far behind on the hardware. My goto machines are an ancient HP Laptop and I edit with the old Sony Movie Maker Suite.
    I also have an old iPad Air 2 and LumaFusion actually runs on that very well. It is amazing I can run software like this on a tablet this old and slow.
    If anyone out there needs to hire me I really need a job. Love this stuff.

    • @WrvrUgoThrUR
      @WrvrUgoThrUR 3 роки тому

      I don’t think that’s gonna happen. It’s the same reason Adobe’s Rush is so limited. They’d cannibalize desktop Premier if Rush was any good on iOS.
      Lumafusion is iOS only. They can afford to really push the features of their app to make it a very capable, useable iOS app.

    There’s a way to get the Sony files to work. It has something to do with how the files are written to the card which can be changed in the menu system. I saw someplace I’m sorry I don’t remember where.

    Are you using 11 or 12.9? What memory size would you suggest for GoPro video editing?

    • @rhenzzee
      @rhenzzee 5 років тому

      256GB shoud be more than enough. Better to use 12.9 IMO.

    You can copy direct from Sony cameras by connecting them direct to iPad. Change to MTP mode on camera.

      you are right - I saw that last week. Just use the usb cable from your ipad and transfer the pics and movie files. But you will shortly run out of space. Therefore you need to export your finalized job, which is no problem in Lumafusion. Thanks for your note.

    I guess if apple ecosystem isn't a requirement ..using a MS surface + premiere would be a far easier option. Or is it slower to edit?

    • @frankfeng2701
      @frankfeng2701 5 років тому

      Surface Book 2 would meet the performance requirement for 4K. For quick editing, I'd use Adobe Rush to set up the sequence and fine tune it in Premiere later if needed.

    • @rjtech1193
      @rjtech1193 5 років тому +1

      Lol the surface barely does 4k..but it isn’t the hardwares fault at all. Premier needs real beefy specs to run and edit decent 4K...my pc is i5 8400 and a GeForce 1060...and it stutters on 4k.... my iPad Pro doesn’t...crazy.
