Yes! That was something else that I meant to mention in the video. So far, all the colors in the line are single pigment. I don't know if that will continue to be the case when they add more colors to the line, but as of right now, they are all single pigment, which is pretty cool!
Shana you’re a true artist. I love how you’re like “I’ll do something more detailed later” and yet the final image looks like you took a snapshot of a small section of my yard 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤️❤️❤️.
Hi Shana! Oh, I love to see in action the Tonic watercolors! Wow, huge pans! And I love the colors! I think they're worth. And, I started to watch your video more early, and with the cup of coffee on hand, and then, I have to pause your video, because I have a couple of things to do. So...that's so nice to see this products! Sending hugs!🤗
I love painting leaves and your painting could be a snapshot of my front garden right now! 👏 The paints look so much fun - great for large pieces and mixed media. Luckily they are probably too expensive to ship to Europe - I do have enough paints 😂
My goodness, Shanna. Only you are able to make a gorgeous piece to sell while your intention was to ‘play around’. Love it! I learn so much from you. I kept thinking: ‘oh, I hate it when I put so much effort in painting and having a really pale effect.’ But… then where was Shanna who said: “I use this as an underpainting.” Bingo… that was my aha-moment. 😂 We are both more into realism so ‘underpainting’ made a lot of sense. I still like the boldness of colour more than the wishy-washy-effect. Would gouache be a better option for me to try?
Thank you so much, Nicole! Gouache may be a good option for you if you are looking for a bit more opacity. It can be tricky when it comes to gouache, though, because some brands tend to have a bit of a pale chalky look, so that can be a bit of a downfall. Holbein gouache is really good and has great saturation with out the chalkyness. It can be pricy if you are just starting out with the medium. They do have a primary set that is great for mixing and is a fantastic starter set, though!
Interesting video and lovely painting. One minor point of disagreement… I’m not into mixing all my colors from scratch and those pans will take forever to use up, so I won’t have an excuse to buy more paints 😆! Therefore this set is a pass from me.
As a newbie to watercolor would you recommend these? I haven't started a collection yet. These seem like it would be a good one and done set. Adding as wanted when new colors come out. Or would you think something else is better? Price isn't a concern. I have learned that better products are less frustrating when learning.
I think these are great, especially for the color mixing aspect! They will also last a really long time while you are exploring new techniques. It really comes down to how far along you are in your journey and your goals, though. You may want to start with smaller pans and more colors while you decide if you like working with pans. Some artists prefer to work from tubed watercolors, too. If you know you prefer to work from pans, and you want to explore color mixing, these are a great option!
That came out awesome! I have so much paint, I have been on the fence about these. But I really applaud the folks at St Louis Art Supply for starting the manufacturing of these.
Hello shana I've just watched most of your videos and enjoyed them I mainly do watercolour 1 question ive got ask 1st do you have trouble with knead ed rubbers ive have a bit of a struggle with them they to me dont rub out that well
Hi there! Thank you so much for watching my content, I hope you have been enjoying yourself! Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of kneaded erasers, and I rarely use them. I know a ton of artists who swear by them, though. They do tend to be best for lifting marks out of the paper, rather than rubbing them out the way you would with other erasers. They can also be good for lightening preliminary lines by rolling the kneaded eraser over the drawing. But I don't use them often. I'm actually a huge fan of the Factis Extra Soft Erasers. They rub things out really easily, without damaging the paper too much. I also really like the Faber-Castell perfection eraser, which comes in pencil form and can be sharpened for fine details. I hope this helps!
It looks like they use Acacia Gum, which is a kind of Gum Arabic. Here is their product listing page where they talk a bit more about it! federalcolor.com/products/tonic-watercolor-core-mixing-set-of-6
Are they single pigment colors?

These paints are so fun! Thanks for the shout out!
They really are a ton of fun! And you're welcome! 🥰

The company just informed us that they will discontinue the ceramic dishes for a while….😢😢😢
Oh man, that's too bad! I love the ceramic dishes!
@ - me too…
They’re doing plastic till they can find a company to replace with ceramic.
What a bummer!
