I will never forget how my chest shook from the sound at GBB 2018, I will never forget this cosmic level of sound) The hall was much smaller, but the sound from this was much denser. Still, big halls, like at GBB 2021, are not meant for beatboxing, because we are incredibly dependent on sound. And yes, I can confirm that during the performance I didn’t hear myself on stage at all, I had to beatbox “blindly”, on automatism. But I was ready for this) Therefore, I made preparations that I could do, even without hearing myself at all. Yes, here is the case when quality is much more important than scale. But I can understand the organizers, this is their first experience of organizing such a huge event, the GBB has never been so big. So I'm sure next time it will be much better! In any case, I am very grateful to the SBX team for an incredible experience!

As a GBB looper, I can say the soundcheck was probably one of the worst I have experienced. I went on stage, they tested that there was volume, and then that was it. Maybe 1 minute total. My kick drum didn’t come through as I wanted, so I had to change it backstage, without knowing at all if the loop settings were gonna work (it didn’t work). On stage, I’m off pitch a lot, simply cause I hear pretty much nothing I do.
It upsets me a lot because I was hoping this could be my big “breakthrough” in the beatbox community. Instead I’m scared I’m gonna be known as the guy who can’t perform live.

Some say they prepared for months for this event. i started looping because i wanted to be on that stage one day. so technically i prepared for 3 years 😅 and to get sound issues in those 5 minuts you prepare for so long its just sad ^^ just showed me this should never have been my main focus. im not angry at anyone, not worth to collect anger. i had the experience to be there as an artist, i felt super welcomed by the family, there were some fuck up moments, we all learn and evolve. its really fair to show this side to the public, wouldve been even fairer if swissbeatbox informed/apologized for it publically, but who knows maybe you guys inspired them with this :) Good video my guys ❤️

As a sound engineer, I find myself very frustrated at all the comments about the sound quality at GBB21. I don't know Sinjo's background in sound engineering, specifically in a live setting, and I don't really care to look into all of that before I make this comment. I did a quick little google search and found a video where his title below his name is "Audio Master of Swissbeatbox" so I would gather he's been doing the audio for these types of events for some time. Now with all that said: it really seems like a total novice was behind the board at GBB21. I wasn't there, but based on the feedback from artists it sounds as through he was totally distracted and not putting in any real effort or attention into dialing in the sound for people. Mixing sound for a solo beatboxer should be about the easiest thing in the world, it's one handheld microphone. It sounds like their sound system was either A: MASSIVELY underpowered for this size of the venue, or B: Not properly rang out and tuned to the room they were in (Or both). Blaming Colap's sound on him "breaking his mic" is ludicrous. Seriously, look up what it really takes to "break" a Sure SM58, you can literally hammer nails with it and it will keep on working like nothing's happened. So many other things, like the monitors being trash, not consistent sound check timeframes, etc. All of these issues could have been avoided if he (if he's really the Audio Master who would be in charge of designing the system for the event) had enough experience to properly plan out the system for the size, location, structural material (yes, that plays a big part), and amount of people (we don't just take up space in a room). No shame if you don't know these things or how to account for them - just get someone who does. People paid good money to get there and then get in to the event. And the artists who have devoted so much of themselves to bring their best to GBB deserve better. SBBX is a big enough organization to cover these types of costs, especially for their biggest event of the year. Ok.. rant over.

The thing his he managed to do amazing sound in 2019. In fact the best I heard ever at a beatbox event. On top of that he was mixing for shows of mine multiple times and I was always very happy. So I feel like he was put into a situation were he just wasn‘t able to work properly - thats just an assumption tho.
Short note: they used DPA condensor microphones. Sound quality is amazing but apparently they are easy to break.

    • @daltonius
      @daltonius 2 роки тому +22

@@Madoxbeatbox If he's got a good track record of performance and quality from past events then it's extra confusing as to why this one was so challenged. I would probably agree with you then that he was put in the situation by those above him. I've definitely been in my fair share of concerts / events where a recommendation of mine was ignored by the people with the check books and I just had to make the best of it.
Condenser microphones are definitely a lot more fragile than a dynamic microphone like the SM58, but these types of mics (DPA handheld) are still designed for live use. I would suggest that the microphone was defective if that's really where the problem was. But I know that in the past I've also covered up a mistake or two of mine by blaming equipment. Accidentally hit the HPF, muted the sub routing for that channel (if it's setup like that), etc. All that to say it COULD have been the microphone, but probably wasn't. 🤷‍♂
Either way... I wasn't there, and wasn't the one trying to manage the system and venue so all I can do is speculate as an outside observer, which is a lot easier than being there. I'm hopeful that the next GBB will have all these issues you talked about in the video ironed out.

I was there and I have experience dealing with large sound systems in big venues (as a DJ though, but I think I can speak on this it with some knowledge). The sound was definitely not underpowered. In fact, it might have been way too much. It’s clear they packed in as many subwoofers as possible because they wanted it to be REALLY bass heavy (and it was). For perspective, the entire floor in front of the stage, end to end, was subwoofers. Mids and Highs were pushed from two line arrays on each side of the stage.
From my experience, it felt like Sinjo had not dealt with a sound system of this size before. That much sub-bass requires a lot of dialing in and the number one problem people were experiencing was sub-bass feedback. Without proper sound-checks, it was clear that was a real problem that they had to try to figure out on the fly. Sometimes that meant turning the sub-bass way down (like they did with Colaps and several other acts). For loopers, it was a HUGE problem. A beatboxer can stop a sound when they are getting feedback, but that is way more difficult for a looper. Loopers would start a loop and before a sound could start, a rumbling WOMP WOMP WOMP feedback loop would start building. This resulted in most loopers having to restart their battle multiple times while sound tried to adjust (which is obviously edited out of the posted videos). This hurt a lot of performances (I felt especially bad for KBA and M-Age because those issues hurt them majorly). To me, it felt like complete inexperience with a system this large and an huge imbalance between sub-bass and everything else for the sake of “the boom”. I also think the mics they chose likely weren’t suitable for the performances they were putting on, the size of the sound system, and the acoustics of the venue (and I suspect they were locked in there due to sponsorship reasons, but I don’t know that for sure).
To be fair, when it was dialed in, the sound system was great. And it REALLY catered to some beatboxers (like King Inertia, whose inward bass had the perfect resonance for the subs how they were deployed). You could argue almost unfairly so. There are two videos you can watch right now to see how the subs elevated some performances; King Inertia vs Helium & SORRY’s Tag-Loop Showcase. I honestly think the bass in the room was a huge factor for their victories and, unfortunately, that doesn’t come through well on video. BUT, those are exceptions. For most everyone else, it was a struggle. Add that in to the fact that soundcheck times can be counted in 10s of seconds (when showcase artists like Reeps One got a full 20+ minute soundcheck), things were really messed up.
I hope SBX gets it together and maybe hires a consultant for the next GBB, because it’s only going to get bigger. It felt like Sinjo was in over his head on this one.

    • @daltonius
      @daltonius 2 роки тому +7

@@flyryan This definitely sounds like my first inclination that the system was simply not rang out and tuned properly for the venue. This could be caused by a number of factors, chief among them being that the technician hadn't used the system before or had very limited experience with the specific equipment. Based on the crowd reactions to Inertia's drops I really didn't think the system was underpowered.
Unfortunately we won't ever know why the soundchecks for artists were so delayed and inconsistent, but if they had at least given proper time for these then a lot of the sound issues would have been avoided.
As far as the microphones go, a condenser mic wouldn't have been my first choice given that they are more delicate than a dynamic microphone. Being more prone to feedback issues and being damaged by mishandling, but the feedback issues would have been largely avoided if the system was properly rang out and tuned. Really the more and more I hear about the situation this is really what I just keep going back to.
It's unfortunate that it played out this way... hopefully there were lessons learned.

I mean, I honestly see river's point 100% gbb is arguably the biggest beatboxing competition in the world, some people prepare years and years only to get to enter the stage, and then the reward is soo little, I mean you prepare for years and years, have to face and pass the toughest opponents, all of that for like 1000$ or a mk ll or something, I mean .. alot of people are shitting on beatbox united competition but the prize for the winner is 10k dollars and for the second place it's 5000 dollars, I think both these rewards combined are more than the total rewards given away at gbb since it's ever started, ( and to be clear I'm not saying beatbox united is flawless but all I'm saying that it's actually rewarding ) so I see the reason why would river do such thing, I'm definitely upset that he won't compete again since gbb is the biggest beatboxing stage you can get on atm, but at the same time I'm not surprised he did. That’s why even they take sponsors like raid and why they all have some type of donation link. YT takes, I believe now it’s, 60% of all profits on all videos. Even if the video isn’t monetized-in anyway, for any reason-or if your content is for set to be for kids you also don’t profit in these cases yt takes all. Same reason why people stretch to the ten minute mark it let’s you (by hand) place a ridiculous amount of ads allowing profit in addition to the random ads yt placed and the ones at the beginning and end of a video. Still isn’t much but it more than without doing it. Most of sbx money would come from sponsors, merch, and tickets.
This doesn’t defeat the point nor was it meant to. I’m just reminding you that Yt is notorious for stiffing creators. As for Sxin and Chezame they most likely get their money from donations or day/night jobs maybe even a combination of both.

Thank you both for being brave and speaking up, and I hope this will encourage other beatboxers to come forward and share their experiences and demand change from SBX. It's truly heartbreaking to hear River won't be competing in next GBB, but it's completely understandable in its current state. I hope River will continue to work on his music and share some amazing new tracks with us in the future. I'll be here to support you, whatever path you choose. 🥰🌊

Another thing that i'm not sure if it was talked about in the video, but i wanted to mention :
It kind of bothered me that so many random people came to the Westin during the day. Random as in they arent artists, judges, part of the crew and not related to SBX. Just fans wanting to either hang out or see their idols. That in itself wouldnt have been a major problem, but the amount of noise was too much, and that in a 5 star hotel. Some people broke basic principles and rules and caused trouble. Vomiting infront of the hotel, shattered beer bottles (drinking alcohol in public was punishable by law in Poland at that time) and even when SBX crew members advised people to turn it down a bit and obey the rules, some simply couldnt which led to police being called by residents on MULTIPLE occasions. It was really awkward for everyone, especially those that comformed to the rules and of course the people that organized the event. You could tell that a lot of crew members where in stressed just because of this ALONE.

This video is so important! I’m not a Beatboxer and I haven’t been a part of this community for too long, so I didn’t know most of these things. GBB21 was my first live beatbox event and I really loved and enjoyed it. But hearing all these things breaks my heart. I honestly don’t understand how something like this can happen. Treating artists like this…wow. But it´s important that people speak up, otherwise nothing will change. What I really like is the fact that you named organizations and events that are doing things better. I really hope that next time I will attend an event where I can be sure that everyone gets a good and fair treatment. Because I love beatbox and for me - even tho there’s a lot going on right now - the community feels like a home, like a family. I hope things will become better soon.

I love how you guys have just reminded everyone that we CAN'T act like everything is ok when everything has changed already! People are becoming more and more aware of the underlying problems that can't be hidden under the "we are family" picture. Organizations like Swissbeatbox have huge impact on the scene and they will have to adapt if we want the community to be healthy once again.
Thank you for your statement, River. You were killing it on GBB despite being forced to improvise, and that only shows how advanced as an artist you are. And I would love to see you on big stage again, but never, EVER again, like this. It's unacceptable that a VICE WORLD CHAMPION should feel like he achieved nothing, and even got bad publicity bc of all the speculations going on.

This is insane. The whole time I was thinking at least the winners/runner-ups were getting a decent prize pool, but to see this is disgusting. I do not know what their budget is for this event, but to see other beatboxing events pay their artists better than the biggest event of the year...that says it all. Without the beatboxers, NONE of this would be possible. If they do not make a change, it’s good to see that some beatboxers will stand up and not allow this to happen again.
Edit: Shoutout to MADOX, RIVER’, and any other artist for speaking up on this subject. The fans are all here for the beatboxing community and we will stand up for the artists.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm so sad about seeing River's disappointment, not only because he's one of my favourite current artists but especially because he invested all his passion and time in order to do something from which he didn't get the credit he deserved. By seeing this in a optimistic way, I think it is an important chance for Swissbeatbox and the whole community to see this as a way to grow, to make this event even bigger, to start treating beatboxers as real artists and not just as "machines" who deliver performances (even if the conditions are quite bad like this year) and don't get anything by doing it. We hope to see River again 'cause that would mean that something changed.

I've been a competitive yoyoer for 15 years and all though the scene is a bit smaller than beatboxing I see a lot of parallels in the competition scene. The best world yoyo competions will rent out the ballroom of a hotel for the duration of the event so that players have a place to gather and hangout at any hour during the event. Players do have to pay to enter but that payment is often covered by individual sponsors. The money does go towards cash prizes which could be easily done for GBB seeing how many people pay to watch live. Competitors are givin stage time and dedicated practice areas so they can fully prepare for their freestyles. These are a couple things i could see GBB easily adopting that would go a long ways. At the end of the day its conversations like this that will bring change so good on you two for taking on the task. Big ups!

I really felt the interview point. When I first heard of it I was really hyped to finally hear something interesting even from beatboxers that you normaly don‘t hear outside of shotouts and stuff, but I was really disappointed after seeing the first interview and even more after they asked the same (not really good) questions to everyone.

I think the most disturbing from a viewers perspective is that some performances aren't uploaded because of the lack of sound checks or no security, safety for some people seemed not to be existing at all as we are hearing currently.
As well the Interviews, as said of you both, had very great potential but this wasn't used up to it's potential.
Im neither a pro beatboxer nor an organizer but it seems obvious to me that you could simply take an extra day for the interviews and sound checks to boost the quality of the competition and especially the well-being of the artists

Seems as Swiss Beatbox continues to grow and acquire a higher earning potential, the owners/organizers are getting used to a certain lifestyle that is being imposed on the competitors and is framed as "look at what we're doing for you". In reality, they want the 5-star experience and their core values are being modified to suit their preferences. Many of which aren't in line with the roots of what beatbox really is. I could be wrong, but seems like it could explain the hotel experience the beatboxers had. Yes, the spa was nice and the sauna great, but if ya'll wanted a spa retreat, you didn't need to go to Warsaw for it! Great video you two.

Wow! That was an eye-opener. Big respect to you both for bringing this to the public forum. It seems that GBB has become a very large event, but it is still run as if it is a small event. I’ve watched this video because SBX have made the announcement to cancel the 2022 event and the comments on that announcement steered me here. I am utterly gobsmacked that the artists are not paid for their content, or given a royalty cut from the UA-cam/Spotify etc. revenues. Especially for those artists travelling from countries where their local currency is not as economically strong as the Euro; I mean that is going to get prohibitively expensive for some folks very quickly. I could go on and give my opinions on venue selection and artist treatment, on the harassment claims, the lack of ‘green room’ space to jam and practice; but I won’t because this comment is long enough already. In summary, I am glad that they have cancelled GBB22 and I only hope that the return in ‘23 brings a refreshed, rejuvenated approach from SBX, that is more inclusive, with fairer treatment and remuneration for the competitors.
Big up Madox and River for being so candid and honest about these problems, without accusation and mud-flinging.

From my perspective it's also kinda funny, to see about what things people are complaining.
Cuz in World Champs 2018 I was kinda disappointed. My first ever international battle, first time seeing the family and then it's +40 degrees on the venue and completely no water for participants. Only endless Red Bull which was the sponsor. But you know you can't drink it all day and it does not satisfy your thirst.
But still it's crazy to learn about such a big organisation. I hope they will fix those issues in the next editions.

9:12 even if the seven to smoke was a concert venue, the sound was thrash, it gave ears pain to veryone and the sound was more enjoyable outside the venue than inside haha
12:09 This argument isn't fully honest, they told us hundreds of time that if we go to the side of the hostel (the other door) there was no problem but even kept going in the front. I've spent lot of time on the side and never had any trouble with police, customers or people screaming at me because i was in the front haha
15:00 Hostel in basel litteraly don't want to hear about us again haha they didn't liked us but we were too much, the place was perfect but the personal there was shitty (except the breakfast guy, this man was a king)
18:24 I asked for the extra copy and they told me to take a picture... 12 years of signing contracts i've never heard this :D
19:36 this kind of contract MUST be discussed way before the event. Because what happen if someone flight to poland, don't agree with the contract ? He cannot do the competition ? ok then what ? You still pay for his hotel/food ? Can he still go to the event for free ? I think they didn't have bad intention, there are several organisation problems but this contract was a trap. I read it and yes basically everything you've done on stage/videos for them is their propriety now. We worked hard for 2 years and we have to give them everything or this work was useless. This is not how i want to be welcomed first 15 minutes of a beatbox event.
20:15 you don't read messages we were informed of everything they wanted us to record before the event haha The shoutouts were not mandatory, they didn't tell at first but when you ask they tell you it's not mandatory (it's not normal that you must ask to have informations tho)
22:11 bass6 is litteraly the best interviewer on the planet but he was nerfed by the questions and the technical crew... 22:55 if you let bass6 hobbit and zani drive the interview this would be awesome and i would have probably watched those itw
    24:30 hahahahhaa exactly
29:40 100 zloty if i remember, it was enough to get 1 meal a day if you didn't go to the asian sushi shop every day haha
30:44 two sets of headphones so you listen two times more music !! why using only 1 when you have 2 ears ? think a little bit...
Thank you for this video, this needed to be discussed. They are a lot more to say but that's a very good begining.

Thanks for sharing your opinion! The point with the front door of the hotel: yes they told us to do this instead but come on, its literally next to the biggest street of warsaw. Not really a comfortable place to chill, get drunk and beatbox.

Sound at seven to smoke I don‘t remember 100% because I was a bit tired after 3 days of battles, but I think compared to the main venue at least it was a better representation of how powerful beatboxing can sound.

The point with the info about content: yeah true he could have been more careful reading messages but it doesn’t change the fact about the amount of work beatboxers had to invest in comparison of the outcome for them.
The rest I can agree with!

Hearing this makes me understands den situation more his performance on stage could have been way better but finding out 2 weeks before and getting all of these kinds of things together kinda put him at a disadvantage . Wow this is absolutely eye opening to hear all of this and everything you guys go through !

@@Madoxbeatbox 100% agree that not having a place to chill is bullshit. I was just saying there was alternative (as bad as it was) that didn't involved sbx crew screamign at us + policeman + hotel crew being mad at us

I like this video explaining more about the things not talked about by a lot of people. At least from what I’ve seen only Brez has talked about the sound

You guys need to expand your brand. Take after gamers, when you are going to these events seek out your own sponsors. Wear their brands on your clothes, have them cover travel. Shit like that.
I always felt beatboxers sucked ass at promoting themselves considering the amount of views they are going to garner. The attention you draw, every view you get, IS WORTH MONEY!
    Take after the gamers bro.

A real shame the event was really complicated to workaround for the artists but also shown how amazing you guys really where to be able to adapt at such short notice. Hopefully SBX hears this and next time gets a better venue, is way more organised with the artists either as a group or individually to get feedback and ideas on how to make the event the best it can be for both artist and spectator.

Everything is so painful. I looked up to gbb, as I did to a lot of other artists, but the more I learn, the more depressed I become. Because I was so disgusted when I found out what had happened, I stopped beatboxing for three months. Since then, I haven't viewed a single SBX video.
