    Snow is falling and everything is freezing up!!! 😭❄🌨 I grudgingly am putting my boat to sleep for the long winter's nap, so it's officially time to gear up for ice fishing. Here's everything you need to convert your Echomap in to an ice fishing sonar rig, hope you like it!

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 роки тому +2

      Hi John! Great question, the Echomap and Garmin GLS 10 Panoptix box are rated for a minimum operating temperature of -15C (5F) and the MTech battery has a minimum discharge temperature of -25C (-15F). So great for ice fishing (I don't ice fish outside in much colder than that) plus they stay a bit warmer in the bag with the heat generating from the electronics. I think when things get colder outside, that's when people start using a tent lol!

    I get the choice between the dual neam and the GT CHIRP series transducer. Kind of curious why you went with the High Wide GT8 over the High Narrow GT10? I've been looking at the GT10 to backup a unit with livescope but this video has me wondering if I'm making the right choice.

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 роки тому +4

      This is a great question, let me explain my choice: If you ice fish mainly deep water, go with the narrow beam GT10. I fish mainly 5 - 20 feet and RARELY 30 feet so for me the wider beam is best with the GT8. If I consistently fished 50+ feet, I'd probably go with the 10. Hope that helps!

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 роки тому

      Hi Bucky, you are correct, you need a compatible transducer to enable the screen you want. So if you have no transducers connected, no sonar screens are available. If you only have a Livescope transducer, then you only see Panoptix views etc. So once you plug in the ice fishing transducer, the flasher menu will become available :)

    Has anyone put a echomap 102 or 106 in the setup.. does it fit?

  • @rolandpace3147
    @rolandpace3147 2 роки тому +1

    A little off topic,..
    I have an echomap 73 sv. I have my gt54 transducer on the back. I was told I could add another gt54 to the front(trolling motor) and run them both to the same unit. But I had to basically buy a splitter cord to run both cables to the unit with a switch that let me toggle between each transducer. Because the unit can't run off both of them at the same time? Is this true? And could you tell me what exactly needs to be done and bought to accomplish this?

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 роки тому +1

      This is a great question and it's kind of a yes and no answer. You can technically run two GT5x transducers together but not in the way you are looking for. There is a splitter and a configuration that allows you to pair up two transducers, but it would be for left and right sidescan only and you have to select which one does the left and which does the right. This is anyone with a boat that has a big motor or something else blocking a single transducer from getting sidescan on both sides. But you would not be able to do this in your setup and have both working at the same time of be able to choose one or the other, that's just not supported. You can read about the splitter and what it can do here: support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=jmQSWv9wgi20351c3Hkf86&searchQuery=transducer%20y-cable
      In order to do what you are looking for, you would have to have a second echomap (I am assuming your 73sv is a Plus or UHD and can be networked) and connect a GT54 to each unit and then you can share the transducers over the network and use them from either unit.
      Hope that helps!

      To be honest I haven't tried it yet!!! But I think the adjustments to the traditional sonar would be the same as the water... play around with the gain to get the level of detail you want. How is the battery, and why u chose it over the dakota/Marcum since every1 raves about it.

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 роки тому

      I really like Dean's service at MTech and most of the pro anglers I know and respect their opinions use MTech batteries. The only thing I don't like is the form factor doesn't fit very well inside the frame/bag. That's why I give the dimensions of the battery area so you can shop for a form factor that will fit better. For Dakota, I know they sell a ton and seem to be good batteries, but I keep hearing their customer support is flat out awful. I don't know anything about Marcum batteries so I can't really offer an opinion on those ones. Thanks so much for the question and for subscribing!

    You said you had the better transducer? Is the 8 better then the 10? Great vid by the way.

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 роки тому

      So there is something I feel like maybe could be another video and that is the difference between HW and HN transducers. But to answer your question, the cheaper transducer is the Dual Beam IF transducer, model 010-13069-00 that you can find for $100 CAD. The 8HW is the better transducer vs that model. Now for the GT10, I'm not sure if it's discontinued but I only see the GT10HN (High Narrow) listed on Garmin now, which is not good for shallower fishing as the cone angle is smaller. So for the wider cone angle (HW - High Wide) models, it seems it only comes in the GT8. It should be noted the GT8 also comes in an HN version, but I recommend for most people, get the HW. Hope that helps!

    • @hooznxt04
      @hooznxt04 2 роки тому +1

      Garmin recommends the GT8 (transducer in this video) for fishing in waters 50ft and shallower. For deeper than 50ft they recommend the GT10. Although guys have said they have used their GT8 as deep as 80ft with no issues. Cone angle of the GT8 is adjustable 16-24 degrees. GT10 is adjustable 7-16 degrees.
      There is also an older/out dated “dual beam” ice transducer that has 2 fixed cone angles to choose from 15 or 45 degrees but, nothing selectable between and if I’m not mistaken doesn’t support chirp frequency either.

    • @aaroncase197
      @aaroncase197 2 роки тому +1

      @@hooznxt04 would you not get a better separation with the tighter cone? New to Garmin was Humminbird to the bone but made the switch in the spring ordered a GT 10 but might need a GT 8 for walleye

    • @hooznxt04
      @hooznxt04 2 роки тому +2

      @@aaroncase197 you would definitely think so and that’s what others “claim” yet garmin hasn’t published any specs on separation to confirm. I’m in the same boat as you. I have the 8 but am going to purchase the 10 for walleye fishing. I think the 8 would do the job fine but I want the narrower cone of the 10 to dial in on the fishable area below the hole. In 30ft of water the narrowest angle cone (16*) with the 8 is probably showing area outside of the hole that isn’t really fishable. You have to remember the cone gets wider the deeper the water. If you’re fishing for walleye in 15-18 ft of water or shallow water for panfish the 8 should do you just fine. I’m no expert by any means, so take this for what it’s worth. Just passing on the info I’ve gathered.

    I built a setup using my ps22 panoptix do you fill it is worth the money to buy a ice Transducer to use with it?

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  2 роки тому

      This is a great question and I don't want to give you a non answer but it really depends on what style and what kind of water you fish. If you fish deeper water or just rock piles and other areas that are not choked with weeds, then you probably don't need the ice transducer. If you fish shallow flats and bays like I do that still have a ton of weeds even when there's ice on the water then you might find the panoptix is not very useful and this is where the ice transducer would perform better.
      Now to be completely transparent, I have never tried ice fishing with a livecope so I can only go by the feedback I've had from other anglers. I'm continuously being told that the livescope is not very effective in shallow water with a ton of weeds and that it's almost unreadable. Hope that helps!

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing  Рік тому +1

      It depends on the depth you're fishing. If you fish super deep, then you want the 10 which is narrow. Most people I know fish regular to shallow depths, so the wider 8 would be better. The unit type you are using isn't relevant, hope that helps!

I recently bought the Portable Striker 4 and added an Ice-Ducer to it. The bag has a velcroed pocket that attaches it to the frame. Very secure. They've solved the problem in their cheapest unit, but not the most expensive.
