  • I was misdiagnosed with type 2 diabetes for four years before receiving a c peptide test and antibody test which identified type 1 diabetes. If you have type 2 diabetes and despite lifestyle changes find it more and more difficult to manage, I suggest asking your doctor for these two tests to rule out a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. #diabetes #type1diabetic #type2diabetes

I had a similar lived experience. Initally I was given oral medications to treat type 2, as it was thought by my doctor at the time, I got even sicker and ended up in a hospital for some time. They did all sort of tests and subsequently, I was diagonised with type 1 - the thing was that my c peptide and antiboy results were within the normal ranges - strange right ?? I was told there is a subtype called auto-antibody negative type , which is quite rare and not a lot of info available on the Internet. Cheers mate :)

Thank you so much for the feedback! And good luck as you begin on OP - feel free to post questions here as well, not sure I will know how to answer them but I can try.

That endo should be ashamed of themselves! A person your age and fit doesn't turn into such an uncontrolled type 2 just like that, it takes years of gradually getting there! In fact, that's true for obese patients too!

@@grumpyinbrooklyn6347 I agree and thanks for the comment! I am hoping that as this happens to more and more people that doctors start to think outside their traditional box, and that patients have more stories of it happening to others which can then lead to better questions

Hi Doug. I have type 2 diabetes for 10+ years. I'm losing weight. Can type 2 diabetes "cause" you to "lose weight"? Or is it possible that I might be "misdiagnosed" as type 2 diabetes? Thanks.

Hi! It's hard to say for sure, but I definitely recommend asking your doctor for a c-peptide and antibody test to rule out a Type 1 diagnosis.

What is the number range do I have to look for the C-Peptide & antibody test? And what is the number range that will show that you have Type 1 diabetes?

    • @dougfabrizio2794

@@Melanie-gu4clthere are a few different standards for c-peptide test, but generally a fasting c-peptide of less than .6 will likely indicate type 1. For antibodies, if you test positive for one of the 5 antibodies they test for, then that's likely a positive as well, but confirm all of this with your doc.
