You don’t need to swipe the door handles at all - just touch the small indentation on the handle and it opens. At least it is that way on my E450. The hyperscreen option is actually less money ($1500) than the open pore maple/aluminum strips dash and console option ($1700), which is what I ordered on mine. Much nicer than a wide sheet of glass with a screen that won’t be used.
@@autogefuehl I would question whether that was/is the intent. Imagine swiping a finger across a filthy, mud covered door handle to get it to pop out. Again, it is not like that on my car nor the ones I’ve seen at dealerships. Most of the time, of course, the handles pop out automatically (and light up) as a person with the key walks within 3-4 meters of the car.
I sat in this new E. I'm glad to see they aren't using the same cheap hard plastics from the C and it feels more solid with less creaks when pressing on panels. However, the design is plain. The previous gen door panels for example look so much better with the wood or trim that would flow from the dashboard into the doors. Now it looks like a separate part all together. The handles are silver whereas the centre part is carbon fibre. The door handle part with the window switches should've matched the centre part. It looks odd.
I’ve done 8000 km across Europe in our E300de T and I must say despite a few annoying details the car is an absolute masterpiece out on the road and a perfect family car. Already ordered another E300de for delivery in September and trying to convince my wife that we need an E53 after that ;)
It seems like a good performance e-hybrid car, but the sedan trunk size of only 390 liters is a technical design crime. BMW did much better job where 550e sedan hybrid has 500 liters of trunk space, and the estate hybrid version having 570 liters.
Yes, I want all the additional screens. I think the look along is amazing. Not sure my spouse will use it, but the look is what I like. I'm willing to pay the extra money.
Well In Turkey/Türkiye we have to pay 120K Euro's for the E180. I would die for this one for 120/130K, I would buy the next day if it was priced like that over here!
This car is similar to the setup in my x50e. The thing that annoys me about mercedes is they still do not offer hands free highway driving. My X50 can go for hours on the highway without touching the wheel...It's pretty nice...BTW the speed limit assist imo is very annoying. Multiple times the car thought the speed limit was significantly lower than what everyone else on the highway was driving...or it just got it wrong like 20 in a 45...I turned that off.

Interesting setup. I still wish manufacturers tried adding more electric power instead of more ICE power for these sporty PHEVs. At least you get such nice features such as the spring loaded folding rear seats unlike in the new BMW M5. I still think the battery is way too big. Because of the rear wheel drive platform they're limited on space, where they can put it. (though I still wonder how JLR does it the new Sport and normal RRs)
Good review 👍👍. Overall a bit of tech overload (for me anyways), but I do like the overall design, and it seems the actual "car" parts of this new E are quite good and its not just a smartphone on wheels. From a design and powertrain perspective, I like this more than the AMG C-class iterations. I find the new 5-series to be quite ugly, so yeah maybe this more conservative re-design on the E-class isn't so bad.
Good luck changing the oil filter, spark plugs or anything that plastic cover, which is being blocked by the dynamic swaybar! And then it costs $120k - they really don’t want people to buy this car. It’s also gone cost double in labour just to do basic maintenance! 😢
A brave attempt to explain why I need to spend €120k on this thing. It might just be worth noting I could spend around €45k on one of the Smart Brabuses, designed by Mercedes, which are about 0.1 second quicker to 60 mph. They also have a so much better UI/UX. I really cannot see why anyone with a brain would buy this nonsense.
I don't understand why all manufacturers of sedans don't cover the top part of the boot/trunk. That exposed metal looks cheap and horrible. How much more will it cost to design a one piece carpeted cover that goes over to cover it. It's so irritating.

In the US, 4-wheel steering and air suspension are a single $3200 option - probably my favorite feature on my new car, an E450 4Matic.
