We were blessed to have our Chesapeake/Labrador retriever, Sargent Fred, for 17 years. He was big, strong and sweet except when he was being stubborn. Loved to ride in the car. If he didn’t think the ride was long enough he would refuse to get out. It was a battle of wills which often ended with me getting in the car, backing down the driveway, then driving right back up. Then he’d happily get out. Yep, we both knew who was the boss. Sure do miss him.
My hubby has been known to do the same with our 3 dogs ( 1 German shepherd and 2 lab x border collies) hell go around the block so he can back up the drive with a trailer. And then they just bounce out happy as can be
@@MaddieDazey I know a lab like that too. LOVES to swim, through waves even like it's nothing, but when it comes time to rinse the salt water off of him, he acts like there's lava coming out of the hose. xD
I from the Chesapeake Bay Area. Back in the early 1970’s I was gifted a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. I 4-H’ed dog obedience with her. I’m now 65. I think of Polly every day

I work at a doggy daycare. One of our regulars is a purebred (i believe) Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Dax. His fur appears brown, but when you look at the loose ones he sheds (or looking at the aftermath of bathing him) his fur is actually reddish (we like to sometimes call him Clifford) He's a bit clingy and pushy, but we love him. They're very intelligent, and clearly loyal. Dax likes to pretend he's dumber than he is so he doesn't have to listen, but he will eventually cave. Oh. And he *loves* baths. And the hose we use to spray our pavements of pup waste. They're water-crazy!
See I think the two we had at my doggy daycare must have been rejects because they were NEUROTIC! One would "guard" the front gate and get in every dog's face that came through in the morning and one would follow me around loudly panting for an entire shift. His brother was a cranky great Pyr that eventually couldn't go in the big pens anymore because he got super irritable with the higher energy/anxiety dogs
I was there the day they unveiled "True Grit". I got the pleasure of taking my daughter there when she was looking at colleges and telling her all about it that I was one of the first students to rub his head. Lol
We had a female Chessie that looked almost exactly like Dolly. She weighed about 72 lbs and was not overweight at all. She was a great dog. She got along with other dogs and people very well, and she ignored the three cats we had like they didn't even exist. She was very smart and was easy to train. She loved retrieving and swimming and would do both to the point of complete exhaustion. She's been gone more than two decades after being with us for 12 years. I still miss her to this very day.
I go to school in Maryland and my university’s mascot is a chesapeake bay retriever. Our campus police has an honorary police dog that’s a chesapeake bay retriever and she is a sweetheart!!!

I'm a native Marylander and am familiar with this breed. Rather reserved, but very loyal, hard-working, and will go in any water no matter what the temp is. It's the Maryland State Dog. Good girl, Dolly.
The beautiful Chesapeake Bay Retriever is the state dog of the "Old Line State" of Maryland in the United States. We Marylanders love our flag and our dog
I will always be deeply grateful for the 11 years i had with my Chessie. He was 110 pounds of magic. I quickly realized that he needed a job in between boat trips. I always bagged my groceries in Frank specific bags so that he had items to bring in on grocery day. He always insisted on carrying my purse. He filled days with love and being a contributor whenever possible. He took a huge part of my heart when he left. I was so lucky to have known the very best of the Chessie heart ❤️
Beautiful pup! 11 years ago we brought home a Chessie/Newfie mix from the local shelter, who today is a giant, gray old man. He's reserved with strange adults, like the Chessie, but loves any kids like a Newf, and must be pried out of the water like both.
They are very popular in televised dog shows in the USA. We live in Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay is our neighbor. They also have webbed feet for excellent swimming.
I'm sorry Vanessa but her sweet face at the beginning of her spa-day was anything but "I'm loving the water". It was more "look I decide when I get wet. This is not how I get wet". "Are we done yet? Where are my treats. I've seen your videos. I know you have treats. You're holding out on me". ❤❤❤❤
We've had Chesapeake Bay Retriever family members for over 25 years, one after another. I love the breed. Ours have been waterfowl hunters. It's so beautiful watching them work! The breed isn't for everyone. There dogs need training and an active lifestyle. In winter, here in north, it means pulling on a parka and boots to play outside, no matter the weather. A Chessie will reward her human with devotion, protection, and fun. They are a joy.
CBR's are awesome. Mine didn't not like baths either. Having said that, I couldn't keep him out of the lake. Thanks for this video. It made my smile and brought back such great memories.
My grandparents had three Chessies when I was growing up. Very sweet dogs that were very protective of my siblings and I when we played and walked around my grandparents’ woods.
There is something about a big old fuzz bum brown clown... my family has had 6 of them over the years. They just get into your blood. Don't have one at the moment because I'm not in the position to give one the home they need but I volunteer with Chessie rescue helping place dogs into new homes that will appreciate what the breed has to offer.
