  • In this video I start the portable generator wiring set up by installing the wiring to the generator breaker in the main breaker panel, installing the 6" wiring trough, and the custom install of the watt meter. This is part one in this series. Subscribe to see part two which will be a comprehensive look into setting up and using the portable generator with your homes wiring system. I promise you will learn all you need to to know about portable generator wiring.

I worked for a generator service company in North Jersey for 30 years. I did shop work the last 20 or more. Worked on all kinds of equipment. Generators big and small. Welding equipment too. Everytime we had a bad storm the portables often showed up from people who never took care of their machines. Modern gas is terrible. Running one out of fuel is better than nothing but not always effective. The best method is to drain the carb if it has a drain screw on it and many do. I think it's almost best to leave a machine dry and not with any fuel in it at all. When a storm is possible go buy fresh fuel and have it ready if needed. The fuel in the tank goes bad even with additives. Ethanol free fuel is available but tough to get. My son buys AvGas for his small equipment.....another good option but not easy to get. I worked on mostly RV generators for quite a while, Onan's and am like the GURU of Onan generators in my area and for many miles around. I should make a You Tube channel.....LOL....I'm also the guy who asked you about putting Romex drops in an unfinished basement in conduit.....I did all my drops and added GFCI's to every outlet.....being retired, I have time !! I bought a nice 1/2" bender to make box offsets......Reliving my early days as an electrician !! I do love that work.....

Thanks for the insight Rich. You can run NM in conduit but you have to watch the fill of the conduit. One 12/2 or one 14/2 is fine but after that and 1/2" conduit you'll probably have a difficult time getting the cable into the conduit. You just have to have a clamp on the NM where it enters the conduit. It's called a "From 2" connector. Well. that's actually the slang term but the supply house should know what you're talking about.

@@electricianron_New_Jersey I stripped the cover off the dryer 10-3 on one drop. I only had one drop with 2 ,14-2's and it was no problem. I did use "from 2" connectors on the top of the drops. HD has 'em...I try to do things right but without actually being in the business, it's tough. Your videos are great. I'm gonna do a couple outside receptacles next. There are none now. HD has those complete boxes with in use covers with GFCI's.

I installed my generator hook up at my house. Installed a main breaker main panel with an interlock. Also on my portable generator I modified it with a switch so that I could switch back and forth between it having a bonded neutral and a floating neutral. So when I’m using it as a back up power generator the neutral is floating and it’s bonded at the service so it is the first point of attachment and I have it property bonded to my electrical system. When I want to use it as a portable generator I can flip the switch to bonded neutral and it’s safe to use as a portable generator.

Been enjoying your videos for a while now, and this one is timely for me since I am exploring installing portable generator wiring like this. One question I have is whether or not it is acceptable to add a main disconnect breaker to my Square D QO panel in my basement. Outside my 20 year old house I have the power meter which feeds two 200 amp breaker panels. These breaker panels are mounted on the house just to the right and left of the power meter. These two breaker panels then feed two sub panels inside the basement about 20 feet away. It is on these two sub panels that all of the circuit breakers are mounted for the house circuits. This is where I would like to mount the generator interlock mechanism on the panels but currently there is not a main disconnect breaker installed on these sub panels. Can I add a main disconnect breaker to this panel even though there is already one on the outside breaker panels?

There';s a video on my channel where I install a Square D Homeline main breaker in the "sub panel." It's easy to do with the Square D panels.

Can current goes back on the neutral to the utility even with the interlock? I think thats why in Canada we can't use those. We have to use a generator panel with two 3-poles interlocked breakers cutting the neutral. Makes a generator job twice more expensive!

Have two cheating communist carbide hole cutters from graingers that cost over $100 for both and suck. Have a made In USA 7/8" carbide hole cutter that I used over a 1,000 times.

I got a conversion fuel kit so my portable generator can run off natural gas ,propane and it still can run off gasoline but like you suggested leaving gas in the tank can go bad and hurt the system I am able to run a natural gas hose to my generator from the gas meter so no need to get fuel as long as the natural gas is online . If that failed I would go to propane . I also think there are additives to preserve your gasoline while it sits in the generator . It has been awhile since I ran it so with your suggestion I should give it a start .

That's thick steel, not easy to deal with. Got to appreciate the trades that work with metal constantly like machinists and sheet metal workers. I actually have a hydraulic Greenlee punch-die set that makes perfect holes in sheet steal. I bought a gear-reducer thing that I use on an electric drill instead of the super expensive hydraulic pump. I used it only a couple times. Stashed away in the garage! YES, take a break for crying out loud. See you when you post your next video.
