ABC's new fall comedy, based on Chef Eddie Huang's memoir, focuses on the son of Chinese immigrants trying to fit in after his family moves to Orlando.
+Dustin Vuong Thats the reason i dislike this series its "relatable" not funny if it was funny and well written id be all over it. Watch "peep show" 10/10
This is a show about Asian fob stereotypes that takes place in the 1980s. So for all the people getting butthurt about it not being ''representative'' of the Asian population, or the mother's fake accent is ''off'', just know it's a COMEDY. So stop taking everything so literally. I missed the days when people watched comedies without overanalyzing it or getting their feelings hurt.
Yup if we take a stupid sitcom seriously and pretend like it represents reality or a whole group of people then white people should be up in arms over Married with Children
Plus, it's a retrospective. Everything is either exaggerated in hindsight for funny effect or, in the mom's case, is actually toned down (my mom is ten times worse)
RussX5Z wow you are one sensitive butthurt baby. Calm down you're going to be ok. Be thankful that asians have the highest median income and have mostly positive stereotypes about them like being disciplined peaceful and intelligent. But consider the fact that no entertaining show is going to have all perfect characters because it would be boring. If you want asians on tv or in the movies then sometimes they will play negative roles.
First of all, Im Chinese. And I live in Canada. Just saying. Second of all, if the upset people actually read the comments from the Asians and Chinese people, you would see that almost no Asian here is offended. It's quite relatable if you are actually Asian. The non-Asians are more offended than the ASIANS THEMSELVES. Like what? I am totally stoked (had to) to watch this tbh!
People still bring fish to work and nuke it in the microwave. Oh, it's so bad regardless whether you're Asian or not, and I love fish, freshly cooked. Bringing ethnic food to school is probably not a great experience for Asian kids. I ate at the school café as a matter of convenience.
I am glad that "Fresh off The Boat" happened. This is the first Asian-American sitcom that lasted more than one season. I am glad this show exist. This is an Asian American's dream come true!
This is a great show, I laughed so much & can't wait for the next season. Yes, it's all stereotypes but that's what makes it funny just like Everybody hates Chris. I love both shows but that doesn't mean I'm going to think all asians and african americans are the way the shows portray them to be. I take this for what it is: entertainment. As for people I meet whatever their race is, I'd rather acquire my own opinion after I get to know them instead of categorizing them by stereotype. Everybody's different.
This show keeps getting better and better. The comedy never fails to keep me laughing. Jessica is a hard woman but always in a funny way so you can never hate her. The kids are awesome! Such great actors. The casting on this show is perfect!
Don't understand why there's so much hate, I love this show. I laugh so much when I watch and I can't stop either. I think everyone should give it a chance 'cause it's hilarious
***** An Asian f.o.b mom who doesn't like black people?? WHOA I have NOT seen that before!! I mean not that my mom doesn't, just saying in general hehe
Chinese and Vietnamese families are not as son-craving as the Western media would like to portray them. Daughters are viewed as more responsible toward helping their parents and more caring.
Thank goodness, now I dont feel so bad. I feel however that half of these jokes are just funny because we're asian. I do hope, however it doest go the way of outsourced just because some poeple can't take a joke -.-
if the accent is real I would not be able to watch this show and take it serious enough, and then this would just be a comedy with no heart because it'll always be funny and the emotional/serious aspect will be ruined. They made her accent easier (for lack of a better word) to understand for the audience(not just Asians).
It's embarrassing that an Asian can't even fake a proper Asian accent but I probably won't fault her since it's likely that ABC must have had a hand in ensuring that she had this pseudo-Asian American accent to pander to the general American audience.
I love how relatable this is, especially bringing the Chinese food one. I'm actually from the Philippines and when ever I bring some rice and adobo people react just the same way as they did on the show lol
As a Chinese from China, after watching the first two episodes, I find this show mildly amusing, not as good as Everybody hates Chris, but I will keep watching, moreover, I don't find this show offensive at all, maybe because I didn't grow up in America, don't have to deal with the stereotypes and racism there.
I'm so happy that there's Asian representation on TV with this new show. Looks pretty funny, can't wait to watch it. I'm also digging Black-ish. Hoping more PoC are represented on TV!
Why the hate? My family lived in the same situation as theirs and I find this show hilarious! I can relate to a lot of the situations, though they are over the top. I know they're really milking the Asian stereotypes, but they're milking the white stereotypes too. It's good fun... just roll with it!
um you have internet right.... just use that.... i don't have cable either... its slow and shitty... i download and watch tv shows at kickass torrents before it went down... and extratorrent.cc. For streaming i used 123movies.... and for ufc i use firt row sports
Ohmigosh, I’m Indian and I can still relate to this so hard 😂😂😂 I guess Asian struggles and stereotypes are quite similar no matter what kind of Asian you are. Gosh, I love this show.
This looked funny to me, but I'm sure it would be a million times better if I grew up in an asian american family. Some people are going to love this!!
The title is an odd coincidence though. In Australia and New Zealand ''Fresh off the boat'' or simply ''FOB'' as a derogatory slur used to describe polynesian immigrants from nearby island nations(Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji etc.).
Feels more like an asian version of blackish. However, both blackish and malcolm in the middle were set present day, and malcolm in the middle felt more 90s than this show. This show looks present day to me if it werent for the old cars.
Ridiculous amount of trailers... but of all the trailers, this one actually seems funny. Now that I think about it... this is like the first Asian family show.
If you read the book he wrote with the same name (Fresh Off the Boat). It is waaaaayyyyy better because it shows how much of a stereotype breaker he really was and actually went in depth in to his family history.
***** lol he's just an actor, this show is not a 100% accurate depiction of eddies life so why does it matter? Plus Korean actors are much better anyways.
***** It's a tv show btw not a movie and i don't understand the second half of your comment lmao. Anyways I can see that you are a very close minded person and i can't do anything about that so i will just give you some advice, if you don't like it don't watch it.
Seriously! Why make Asian people look bad?! Can we find humor in a different way? I can't stand why all American shows & movies gotta make Asians like this! I understand it's called "Fresh Off the Boat" but I feel like us Asian Americans have more potential than that! We can put us out there by making shows like "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" for instance.
The whole thing is satire, it's meant to make fun of Asian stereotypes while also showing that in some ways, they can be true. And it's based off an Asian guy's memoir-I highly doubt he would promote offensive sayings or racist comments. And if he does, then surely it will get pulled.
Vila Phonasa speak for urself. none of those stereotypes fit me and im sure it doesnt fit samantha khyung here or all the other asians. if you can relate to those stereotypes, then it probably says something about how fucked up you are. and by the way, why dont you try laughing about some black stereotypes and jewish stereotypes in public then tell them to have some self humor and selfreflection?
good point. im glad theres still people like you out there who's clearminded and prepared to stand up for urself, unlike lots of these people above, who are suffering from the classical Stockholm syndrome and brainwashed to such extent that they are constantly tryingto justify the daily discrimination they experience in reality.
Omg I love this show I remember when I didn't want to watch it but then my mom made me watch it and then for the next few weeks I watched it every single night
Looks funny. I don't get the PC police. One moment you're yelling: "Immigrants shouldn't lose their culture thru assimillation. We need to recognize and celebrate people's unique and different cultural differences." Then a TV show shows up that covers cultural differences and you're like: "What's with this racial TV show?"
So now we are getting shows setting around Black, Mexican and Asian people where is the show about indian/south asian family? We are feeling a bit left out.
Well the main actor is Korean in real life. The whole cast is mixed so it is not really authentic. The wife acts more Vietnamese than anything! Wouldn't be surprised if she started squatting on the floor and smoking cigs!
im glad the asians have a little bit of representation on american television. they are a substantial minority here, and in Canada so this will be good for them to see.
yeh basically... its based of his book FOB and his struggles to fit in american society being asian back then when he was growing up. Its a good and funny book and ABC have made it to a tv show ... cant wait!
From what I've seen on tumblr & trailers this show is pretty accurate to most immigrated asians (my mother and the show's mother are basically the same except my mom's not at all funny but you know, white people aren't her bffs). And tbh pretty accurate to White Americans' reactions to any asian person- even now, not just back in whatever time frame this was set in. I went to NY once (I'm Canadian btw born and raised) and literally everywhere I went white people POINTED at me and VERY LOUDLY went "OH MY GOD AN ASIAN PERSON" like, literally assumed I didn't know english so they thought I wouldn't understand their LOUD POINTING and just stared at me and some even laughed (didn't realize racism was so alive in america- what a great vacation) Definitely have to watch it now that I found out what it's actually called.
This isn't unique to us Asians as it applies to all people from every ethnic background. Just travel a bit and this will come out pretty loud and clear. Have you ever wondered why Brazil has the largest Japanese population outside Japan? Brazil had foreigners from Japan since the turn of the century. By that time, there was poverty everywhere in Japan and those who fled to Brazil where welcome to work in the coffee plantations. Not surprising since Japanese make up the largest community outside Japan. However this also applies to Japan's own racism against it's own people. Look at how poorly Okawanians' are treated in comparison to the mainlanders. Racism is distinct from ordinary bias because it was created as the justification for and original blueprint of a society in which race and class were pretty much the same thing. Class is how wealth and therefore power is organized. So, race and power are inextricable. So while parts of the original blueprint have changed over time. We built real structures, like our electoral college, ghettos, and suburbs, just to name a few examples. Which continue to dictate the way we live today based on that blue print. We can change our minds about it, but unless we dismantle and rebuild those structures, we’re stuck with the inequities they create. I struggled to but I question what this show is really trying to accomplish. It's merely preaching to the choir, just saying.
Guys, I'm Chinese and I've watched 5 episodes so far and I am LOVING IT. Seriously. This show is genuinely funny. Yes it's true Asian parents find it hard to say I Love You or I'm Sorry. Or if they show affection it's either through action or with more mean words. I really love this show! I don't feel offended at all!
So much hate. Am I the only one who likes this show? I think it's relatable if you're Asian
not even only Asians, i'm African-Canadian and even i can relate The term "Fresh Off The Boat" can apply to any immigrant family
I love this show. It's so relatable!
Samuel Appiah i am first nations from canada and i relate to this because i moved to the suburbs when i was a tween

here in 2021, everyone gets offended. I'm sad to see that it started so long ago.
100th like your welcome your famous now
Who else brought food from their culture to lunch and everyone say "what is that?"
Smile28 not when everyone around you are mostly Cantonese or Taiwanese....so make no difference....
i don’t have a specific time but honestly i’m sure it happened to me lol
One time my friend rice filled the whole table
i always said "it's food"
i mean honestly
The Chinese food for lunch thing was my struggle back in elementary and one of the reasons why I never ate at school unless I had a sandwich :(
People still bring fish to work and nuke it in the microwave. Oh, it's so bad regardless whether you're Asian or not, and I love fish, freshly cooked. Bringing ethnic food to school is probably not a great experience for Asian kids. I ate at the school café as a matter of convenience.
I was always jealous of my friends bringing ethnic food to school.... like they have sushi or noodles and I'm sitting here with a Nutella sandwich
I love Chinese food... We could have swapped lunch. My mom gave me white people food almost every day
***** I do that all the time! but I'm the only one :(
Nooo :(
I am glad that "Fresh off The Boat" happened. This is the first Asian-American sitcom that lasted more than one season. I am glad this show exist. This is an Asian American's dream come true!

I love the show, and i'm white from Sweden.
One of the clusterfuck of trailers for ABC shows that I didn't hate.

This is my new favorite show!! Awesome cast! The only thing that sucks about it, is that it only last 30 min!! :))
Shaenova1 thats how long all sitcoms are
The moms kinda hot
There's no kinda about it
Her name is Constance Wu :) She's 26 and the kid playing Eddie doesn't look more than...12? Yeah...what an awkward age gap. LOL
***** An Asian f.o.b mom who doesn't like black people?? WHOA I have NOT seen that before!! I mean not that my mom doesn't, just saying in general hehe
J. Han She's 32.
WC Lol yeah I just found that out. If you just type her name in the Google search bar it says she's 26 so yeah
0:31 Wait... An Asian who wanted a daughter instead of a son? Call the writers think they made a booboo
Chinese and Vietnamese families are not as son-craving as the Western media would like to portray them. Daughters are viewed as more responsible toward helping their parents and more caring.
+Vu Anh Ngoc Nguyen no no no you got it all wrong. They prefer having 1 son and 1 daughter. That's pretty much the ideal everywhere
im pretty sure in china you "let go" of your baby if its a girl.
so I guess they didn't do a very good job with me and my two sisters
Taiwanese families are not as boy hungry
People are taking this show way too personally.
In what sense?
It is quite 'in your face'. Sometimes that's what works though
As an Asian living in Australia, I CAN RELATE

I laughed about 5 times during this trailer, which means it'll get cancelled in no time.
Oh don't say that, but yeah, the giggles man
Still going strong
Mm, season finale rn
Got renewed for season 6. It will be the last season to be set in the 90s though.

Chirs Yu the one acting father...his parent is from Korea....don't think he speak well in mandarins....
I hope this is a good show! But so far I'm finding the mom's accent too fake.
well, it supposed to be funny
if the accent is real I would not be able to watch this show and take it serious enough, and then this would just be a comedy with no heart because it'll always be funny and the emotional/serious aspect will be ruined. They made her accent easier (for lack of a better word) to understand for the audience(not just Asians).
I get your point, but after watching the show, I notice that the accent comes and goes sometimes. I just don't think it's a good fake accent.
It's embarrassing that an Asian can't even fake a proper Asian accent but I probably won't fault her since it's likely that ABC must have had a hand in ensuring that she had this pseudo-Asian American accent to pander to the general American audience.
plus I think if her accent was real heavy people will free out more about how racist this is lol cuz people are people...
I love how relatable this is, especially bringing the Chinese food one. I'm actually from the Philippines and when ever I bring some rice and adobo people react just the same way as they did on the show lol
The mom is very pretty, and the characters all seem funny. "Everybody Hates Eddie?" Seems pretty good.
As a Chinese from China, after watching the first two episodes, I find this show mildly amusing, not as good as
Everybody hates Chris, but I will keep watching, moreover, I don't find this show offensive at all, maybe because I didn't grow up in America, don't have to deal with the stereotypes and racism there.

Why the hate? My family lived in the same situation as theirs and I find this show hilarious! I can relate to a lot of the situations, though they are over the top. I know they're really milking the Asian stereotypes, but they're milking the white stereotypes too. It's good fun... just roll with it!
Those fake asian accents tho....
Duuuuude mah mum talks just like that. Ain't fake at all.

Constance Wu is so cute
I'm I the only one that noticed that they drove backward??? 0:43
Lot of hater here, I think it looks good, can't stop laughing. Starting this show right now ! :D
my wife is asian and is exactly like the mom in this ... lol
its asians time to shine on TV
umm so the dad's pretty hot...
Yeah he plays a politician in VEEP too
80smusicfanNO1
That's where I've seen him! He's funny.
If this show is half as good as Eddie's book, or his vice series it is going to be hilarious. looking forward to it!
The title is an odd coincidence though. In Australia and New Zealand ''Fresh off the boat'' or simply ''FOB'' as a derogatory slur used to describe polynesian immigrants from nearby island nations(Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji etc.).
Kristian Brandt My whole family are fobs haha
I think I'm gonna be watching this just for the mom, she's got so much attitude hahaha
This looks like an Asian Malcolm in the Middle.
Or Everybody Hates Chris.
Mutually Awkward That too, but for me, Everybody hates Chris reminded me of an African American Malcolm in the Middle.
Except this is based on true story. Search "Eddie Huang", you'll see a dude with personality exactly like the character Eddie in this show.
ok! at least im not the only one who thinks that
Feels more like an asian version of blackish.
So it's about a family from Asia that talks and acts like they've been part of American culture for years...
That's the best new comedy show around hands down.
Ima watch this shit.
Im Chinese and I'm LOVIN this!!!!!!! wooed
Isn't that kim jong un from the interview? hahaha
yah ahahaha
at first I thought you were being racist lol
the xiAO JIE in the mARKET KILLED ME
The dad looks like kim jung un from the interview XD
It is
same actor
Is there a set date for this?
this show is one step forward for asians and one step back for asian stereotypes
If you read the book he wrote with the same name (Fresh Off the Boat). It is waaaaayyyyy better because it shows how much of a stereotype breaker he really was and actually went in depth in to his family history.

Unsurprisingly the creator of this also worked on the “White Rice” episode of American Dad.
The first season exceeded my expectations. You may not love it or it might become your next favourite show; do check it out!
Is this for relas coming to abc?! Awesome!
The mother is beautiful
eddies mom is the asian karen.
*and i like it*
One of the only good trailers for a new show on ABC I've seen so far
“I miss the markets in d.c. they were so calm” 🤣
I can't wait for the show to develop because right now only the mom has the best jokes.
Finally got around to watching this show. Love it! Reminds me of The Brothers Garcia and Everybody Hates Chris.
So now we are getting shows setting around Black, Mexican and Asian people where is the show about indian/south asian family? We are feeling a bit left out.
The Hitman you have your own movie production, it's called Bollywood
I'm Asian, but I'm not offended lol. I love this showww.

Well the main actor is Korean in real life. The whole cast is mixed so it is not really authentic. The wife acts more Vietnamese than anything! Wouldn't be surprised if she started squatting on the floor and smoking cigs!
Maybe if we could actually get more Asian Americans I to show business.. Oh wait. Its because we hardly have many due to the undermining of us. Smh.

Is this gonna be raising Hope??? If so I'm binging that lol it's on Hulu btw
I've always wanted to take the whole free sample tray loooool
The story is based on the life of Eddie Huang from VICE?
yeh basically... its based of his book FOB and his struggles to fit in american society being asian back then when he was growing up. Its a good and funny book and ABC have made it to a tv show ... cant wait!
There's lots of trailers at once.. Holy crap.
lmao, best trailer ever!! the mother, is already my favourite
I'm not even an immigrant asian and this show was HILARIOUS because of the spot on stereotypes!!
Very nice first episode.
Where Luna?
That's what I was thinking 😂😂
Clara Sartorius CLARA TIS ME AMANDA TIS UR WAFFLE
She starts to appear in the third episode. She last appears in season 5 premeir
I hate comedy but I will admit this is an awesome show
Guys, I'm Chinese and I've watched 5 episodes so far and I am LOVING IT. Seriously. This show is genuinely funny. Yes it's true Asian parents find it hard to say I Love You or I'm Sorry. Or if they show affection it's either through action or with more mean words. I really love this show! I don't feel offended at all!
Love this show
The mother seems hilarious
i love the mom!
