thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed sorry this video was a bit rushed, I had to cram it in before something IRL got in the way, hopefully it's not too noticeable 😅 CORRECTIONS: ok so it turns out they changed a bunch of the gem thresholds/stats right after I finished this video. most of what I said still stands but I guess the gem effects are less harsh with the pearl inserted (notably leaks won't be sprung from artillery). ▷ SOCIAL MEDIA: freddofilms.xyz/contact ▷ MY MOD: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3005119087 ▷ STORE: freddofilms.xyz/store ▷ TWITCH: twitch.tv/freddofilms
why did you decide to rush this out, knowing that its in beta and will be changed almost immediately after you post it making the video essentially guaranteed to be at least half outdated or worse, already completely outdated?
@@kerzid it wasn't in beta when I published the video, it's a 50/50 gamble as to whether klei updates it post beta or not. if I wait all interest around the subject will have died down and the video will get 2 views unfortunately I also have real life getting in the way and I also want to work on other projects
Fight is 100x better than before and very worthwhile for the loot. I do it every 20 days for the loot and could not imagine doing that with pre-reworked ck..
@@agentf672 Very good boat bumpers, but most importantly 2-4 messages in a bottle for the surprising seeds. That way you could get about one sproutrock every fight which is extremely OP if you get a ton of them. Right now I get about 100 gems every 20 days. But if the fight was the old one there is no way I would do it... It is also fun and unique!
@@Youmu_Konpaku_ I’ve only fought CK alone without using Pearls pearl. With friends the fight with the pearl isn’t that bad with just 2-3 people and a couple boats and items to heal yourselves and the boats. More blue gems = more cycles to kill (use no more than 2) It’s better to use attacks on the towers rather than ram them in my experience. You often only need to fight off a couple of guards during the ice phase. Don’t fall in the water Just reload/rollback if you die
Okay, that's the first time I think I completely disagree with something you said (about CK). Not trying to be antagonistic or anything, it's just surprising seeing such high dissatisfaction with the rework, after seeing so many people (including me) happy with it. I personally actually think CK has gotten a lot easier actually almost trivial, AG level
@@Youmu_Konpaku_ boat patches aren't really needed with proper position and priorities. I just place my boat where I only get hit by one canon tower, which is pretty easy, and then I destroy it. After that I just deal with the claws that die super easy, then two cicle the boss with Wilson+volt jelly. The crab guards also die super fast. Any boat damage, which is not a lot, gets healed with logs or driftwood. Rinse and repeat
@@Youmu_Konpaku_ A bit late but I over prepared myself with 40 boat patches and 40 boards thinking this would be a total slough but in the end, I only use 15 boat patch (mostly due to me first timing the boss and ramp the turret too hard which cause leaks, 99% of the leakage can be avoided but bring 2-3 just in case a turret spawn on your boat) and 5 boards. Green gem is probably the meta for this fight since his hand got trivialize by the side of the boat already, the path finding make all the claws gather in one place so just stay on the other side to move around. The boss won't start healing until you destroy his hand or deal a number amount of damage on him, so just take your time and destroy all the turret, as long as you are moving, they will always miss. Once he enters his healing phase, pan flute all the guard and go ham on him, after a while, and I mean a really long window for you to deal dmg, the ice will start breaking around him which is indicated by its cracking sound and visual fx so just move back to your boat and repeat til he die. Take me 3 cycles and not even 1 day to fight him, and he's probably my second favorite fight for now, only after Ancient Fuelweaver. I would never imagine in 100 years would I ever say I'm looking forward to fighting him again
This ck rework is infinitely better compared to what it was before. It's much more combat oriented which Is my playstyle in dst maining wigfrid and Wolfgang. Yes the heal is a pain, but this is where I somehow got the hang of animation canceling. When I timed it perfectly they get the most, 1 heal down, or get alot of people to play with lol. As for mobs I just put them to sleep with a panflute. As for the boat, I just have alot of grass and twigs and have grass boats ready for redoplyment. Rinse repeat. I gotta say took me alot of tries but when I managed to beat it, was seriously an achievement. We've come along way from 3-4 hits and dodge type of bosses to this, so yeah I think this crab king rework is pretty awesome.
Summary of another comment made in this comment section. CK has awful movesets. Each attack he uses has levels. 1. Near Harmless 2. Challenging 3. Difficult The gems socketed on CK have effects on these attacks. Socketing just one type of gem many times will lead to an insane fight due to one of his attack being "overlevelled." *Pearl's Pearl* increases every attack 1 level. *Red* Gems control the towers. If you socket Pearl's Pearl, you cannot socket a red gem if you want the towers to go to Level 2(in which they will be overly annoying.) *Purple* Gems increase sleep immunity of crab minions. Adding any purple gems leads to Pan Flute use doubling. *Orange* Gems increase CK Healing. 2 Orange Gems make CK un-solo-able. (1 advised). *Blue* Gems increase the strength of the ice. (This also leads to unavoidable healing.) *Yellow* increases the damage of the towers. *Green* increases the damage of the claws. Red and Purple Gems are the gems that easily make the fight spin out of control(don't use them). Ruins Gems can make the fight manageable or even fun. OP advises using grass boats and go with 2 stacks of Grass and 1 stack of Twigs Conclusion/Summary: Klei incentivizes the use of different gems to make the fight as balanced as possible. IMO, this is the right way to do things because it rewards players who have the abilitiy to obtain Ruins Gems (those who have great skill in boss-rushing, ruins-rushing, or just good at the game in general) while silently communicating to players with passive playstyles, "These Gems you got from the Hounds aren't worth sacrificing for this."
I think this _really_ highlights the fact this game is called "don't starve _together,"_ and not "don't starve with occasional multiplayer." A lot of the gripes with many of these hard elements of the game are almost entirely surpassed by having 3 more people around. Can't hit Crab King and his minions simultaneously? Your 3 friends can keep pests off your back no problem Wolfgang; focus on that boss! Those towers take ages to break and sink a single boat in moments? They can't sink 4 boats as fast as 1 (and they'll be gone 4 times as fast, too!)
after practicing crab king for hours in a cheating world with maxwell, the only way i was able to beat reworked crab king is with a malbatros beak and spamming grass boats. i really do think the core issue of the fight is that boats are still lacking utility and speed after all these years.
I think the other half, is that the boats are designed with multiplayer heavily in mind, so they are kind of not meant to be piloted alone- and thus clunky if you try to do so. I imagine new crab king would be much more manageable with more hands on deck. The issue is that a lot of people play this game solo, as it is not Strickly a multiplayer experience… so when a feature, like boats, are designed with more strict multiplayer in mind, they don’t work as well when played with solo.
i hate to be that guy, but if you tried for hours, with different gem setups and such, and you could only win under those conditions, you were either doing something wrong or have motor issues. the fight isn't too bad as long as you have a balanced gem setup and have plenty of boat repairs and a flute.
Bruh I just watched your old crab king video thinking “I wonder how Freddo feels about the rework…” time to find out I guess! PS don’t worry about the schedule stuff, life gets in the way. That’s how it is sometimes, we get it. Keep going man
When I fought him, for some reason, the minions just never attacked me. I just wailed on him during the ice phase and they stood there like chumps. Made my encounter wacko easy.
look, i can understand still disliking crab king, i can even get winona's skill tree being a bit too hyperfocused, but calling wurt a wet sock is just unforgivable. my little wet child is adorable 😤😤
Ok so after about 3 hours of testing this dumb boss fight I've finally found a way to beat it consistently on a 1x dmg modifier character with no cheese, just straight hands. This boss fight was a headache but its very much possible with some strategy. Ill say what not to do and what to do because theres MANY ways to mess this fight up. *GEM COMBINATIONS* -Dont use any blue gems at all. Any blue gems massively decrease the amount of time you have on the ice sheet aka the phase where you can really damage him. It also increase the ice walls health making you have even less time. Sometimes you wont even have time to damage him and he just heals back up. -Dont use even a single purple gem. Even 1 gives them sleep resistance making them take 2 panflute uses to put to sleep. Higher amounts of purple gems makes them take 3. On top of this they become so tanky with higher numbers of gems its not even possible to take them out and damage CK at the same time. -Dont use red gems. Like purple gems, even a singular one will completely flip the fight and make it significantly harder. 1 red gem is all it takes to turn the tower shots from just damaging your boat to leaking your boat. Automatically makes the fight 20x harder. -dont use yellow gems. Your boat already takes too much damage as is. This'll make it much more likely that you'll sink since theres gonna be more towers. Thisll also ruin your shell bumpers meaning you'll likely need more. Its not as bad as the other gem types and wont automatically make you lose but it'll make the fight unnecessarily harder. -Use ONLY 1 orange gem. Its basically free. This only increases the healing from the boss but as long as you're hitting him he wont heal. If you use more than 1 he will heal DESPITE you hitting him. So using more than 1 orange gem effectively makes this boss have infinite health and makes him immortal. -Use 7 green gems. This makes the claws insanely strong, with 600 HP and 90 damage and will spawn more of them but with the strategy ill explain further it wont matter. -Obviously use the pearl. No pearl = no altar. *PREP* -Use any oar other than the regular wood one. The wood one is not strong enough to propel you forward after his waves. He will heal to full hp 100% of the time if you use it. Obviously the stronger the oar the better but driftwood oars work perfectly fine. -You can use a Hambat but a 68 dmg weapon like a darksword or glass cutter is ideal. -Some football helms for armor work. I used up 1 and a half but bring extra just incase something goes wrong. -Panflute -Boat patches incase a tower spawns on your boat. That's its only real use so you wont need many of these. -a stack of boards or two to heal your boat up from the tower damage. -Use 8 shell bumper kits. These are near mandatory because it allows you to ram your boat into the towers instead of having to attack them 1 by 1. This saves you an absolute ton of time. Do not use kelp bumpers, they break too easily. A single shell bumper can take down multiple towers and you should have a billion shells from completing pearls quest anyways. -Some healing food. Nothing crazy is necessary, just a couple pierogi's or for Wurt players, trail mix/Figatoni works. -Summon some stars with the star caller staff. Its highly likely this fight will take you into nighttime unless you're Wolfgang. If this happens in his ice sheet phase he will heal to full basically for free. *THE ACTUAL FIGHT* #1 After socketing the gems DPS crab king down until he starts his wave attacks. If you animation cancel with a 68 dmg weapon you should dps him just in time before the claws reach you. They might hit you once or twice but its fine. A Hambat will take longer here and might cause you to either take more hits or need to row back and start from step 3. These claws despawn as soon as he nears 10k hp. #2 immediately pull out your oar and row towards the crab king. This'll cancel out the wave knockback somewhat, placing you just infront of the ice sheet. #3 Jump on the ice sheet and immediately attack the ice wall. If multiple crab guard aggro's onto you, use the panflute and keep attacking the crab king. If only 1 aggro's onto you just oneshot him. With no purple gems they only have 60 hp. A 68 dmg weapon oneshots. Hambats do not which is why i recommend a 68 damage weapon. #4 When the ice sheet starts cracking run to the side that's not cracking and land a couple more hits. Once that cracks too run back to your boat and repair it to full hp. If a tower spawned on your boat, break the tower then use a boat patch over it. Again make sure your boat is full hp before moving to step 5. #5 Row in a circle and keep ramming the towers until you see all the claws are grouped up. #6 Once the claws are grouped, row towards the crab king and make sure all the claws are to one side of your boat. Since the claws are to the right and the CK hitbox is so big you can hit Crab King but his claws cannot hit you. Then DPS the Crab King until he does his waves again. #7 Return back to step #2 and do step #2 - #6 until Crab King is dead. If done correctly it'll only take 3 ice sheet phase cycles. This bossfight was annoying at first and i thought it was impossible but after figuring out what to do and what works its actually a pretty well designed boss fight. 10/10 bossfight if you know what you're doing. Hell on earth if you dont.
I don't understand what you meant most of the time, you don't have to destroy all the towers at all at best you only have to destroy 1 or 2 the towers dont have infinite range so only get the ones that can get your boat while you are in the ice platform even then I legit just ignore them completely and am fine most the time (with orange gen spam and some others mainly dont put many yellow gems if your worried about the towers) now granted it is true that the minons is annoying and you Bassicly need a pan flute but if you do have one and no purple gems then well they arent really a problem anymore and un like bee queen it doesn't require a ridiculous amount of pan flute, and he doesn't push you away that far if you react if you see him doing the animation to throw you away immediately start paddling and you wont get set far away at all like if you do it right (with just a dirftwood oar btw) you can almost instantly get on the ice platform and stop crab king from healing at all. (Also side note) Fun ocean bosses are possible for sure, prime example is uncompromising mode crab king, that legit might be my favorite DST fight as a whole, now granted that's when using cannons but it still stands that fight is very fun, ocean bosses are possible if you have never played Uncompromising mode crab king I would recommend watching a vid of it on yt cause rn update broke UNcomp crab king RIP)
I miss old crab king. And tbh I think that it's issues were overblown... UNLESS YOU SOLO, cause that boss is cancer to solo, but with a few friends it's honestly pretty cool, having some people with the job of damaging him someone manning the boat to dodge and someone to make sure that it can't bs you via an ice staff, it'd be fun, dodging around it feels like your a crew fighting a ocean giant, the new ones kinda kinda dumb
Hey Freddo, just wanted to say that despite not playing DST for a couple years now, I love watching your content. You clearly put a lot of time and passion into them and it's a massive shame that you (and all DST youtube really) don't have larger followings. I think the first and last time my friends and I tried to fight Crab King was back when the farms got completely reworked. There weren't any skill trees for characters but man does the Wurt one look cool (Used to main Wigfrid or Wurt, meat or veg only lol). I think the new fight has promise, especially if the different gem types come into play a lot more. But there 100% needs to be something in game that directs a player to suggesting they fiddle around with that. If they remove the self healing and make Crab King a juggernaut to take down like Toadstool then I can see the new fight having some promise to it. (wait hold on, the wiki says Crab King can have 20,000 - 95,000hp while regular Toadstool has only 52,500. That's just ridiculous. Imagine fighting it with max health on your first attempt not knowing any wiser and the adds just make it so he heals every time...) I'm also really glad to see that they've stuck with updating the oceans more. They seemed so barren despite the fishing etc added, like it only really existed for the lunar island to be a thing and everything else was an afterthought. I've wanted to jump back into it for a while now, it's just hard to find the time and to find anyone else that's interested. They have in every respect made the game easier or more accessible so I imagine the learning curve isn't so brutal anymore, but I'm sure endgame content is just as hard to get to and that's where the real game begins.
Great video! And I agree, ck has some owfull moevsets. But I wanted to explain why it might like his attacks are so punishing: Each ability now has teers, it isn't just harder but new attacks apear; teer 1 is mostly harmless, 2 is already challenging, 3 is honestly insane. These abilities are tied to different gems (and here u can put that bit of reeding the wiki, wich tbh is true that it sucks that we need to reed wikis and game code to figure this out :/). So the idea is that you want to put different gems, because putting just one leads to an insane fight (with pearl, 2 jems of the same type is already tier 2, so some gems are better to not be put in at all or just 1). Keep in mind that Klei has released like 3 hotfixes already to tweek those teers so I won't be surprised if this changes again. Having said that - the red gems are responsible for the damage of the towers, and if you have only 0-4 red-gems, their projectiles don't leave leaks! If you have 5 then they leave small leacs. Pearl counts as 3 gems of each type, so basically potting >1 red gem is a no-no. (Which I noticed you did in the video). Then there are also purple gems - those give sleep imunity to the crab minions (dealing alone with them, I didn't find any other way but to use panflute or to tank, and adding any purple gems leads to dobling the panflute uses). Orange gems buff the healing of ck to apoint that >2 orange gems + pearl leads to healing that you can't cancel solo (so again only 1 adviced). And blue gems make it longer to break ice (which also leads to unavoidable healing), but this one is ok to put 2 tbh but 3 is already too much. And then there are green & yellow (the best gems in the game regardless, cause star collers & green amulets/staffs; so really the fewest you eould have for the fight), these are the best - they increase the number & damage of towers (yellow) and claws (green). So basically instead of creating your own fight Klei insentivises to use as many different gems, and manlly the ruins ones; red gems & purple which are "easy to obtain" are a no-no. If you stick to ruins gems, the fight becomes more manageble and even fun; though I advise using grass boats and go with 2 stacks of grass & 1 stack of twigs instead of normal boat. Rant over; needless to say, I respect your opinion that the fight is still awfull, to each their own as they say :)
@@PenguinMusic-317 I think the correction is quite appropriate. The comment is littered with spelling errors, which make it hard to read, like for some reason, both "leaks" and "tier" are actually spelled right only once. Some of the spelling errors are *awful, *tiers, *appear, *reading(read), *gems, *tweak, *doubling, *a point, *Star Caller's *would, *incentivizes, *mainly, *awful. I usually agree with most of your views on stuff happening in dst but I completely disagree with your take on ck. I was able to beat him yesterday for the first time ever with me only reading up on gem effects and watching a quick fight on yt to get a general idea. I'm by no means a pro or veteran so I'm sure anybody can do it with some practice. Most of what you said comes down to you fighting him solo and rejecting the idea of using methods like a panflute and while it would have been ideal not having to use one, you have to consider that this is a multiplayer game and cks mechanics aren't really an issue in a party, and he's still more than manageable in solo play imo. I think klei did a fantastic job and ck is easily one of my top 3 boss fights now. The only time I went "this was actually really fun" after defeating a boss, ever since I beat fuelweaver for the first time. Definitely a massive step up from what he used to be.
Yeah, division of labor is one of DST's strongest points, and probably what they were going for with this fight, but there's a limited extent to which you can do that if you're on the same boat, and if you're on different boats, then why not just add the superior SW boat system?
I still soloed this boss without panflute and still with pearls pearl. It comes down to being somewhat good at multitasking. Also just don’t put in any extra tower buffing gems if you don’t want the towers making holes in your boat. The holes they make anyways are ignorable and you can use the new mechanic of dropping items on your boat as temporary patches anyways
Genuinely great video, I laughed out loud multiple times during this. I finally understand Winona's skills now too which I failed to get from descriptions. I'm excited to play both Wurt and the Drone now though... I have other things to do. Shame about the Crab King, though I suppose I should watch other UA-camrs too for an impartial overview rather than taking it as gospel >:)
I don't like the new crab king boss fight that much either, but you've treated it a bit harshly. (I'm going to say the conclusion here because you wouldn't read it otherwise): The problem with the new crab king fight isn't the attacks, but the gem power scaling. The rest of the problems are just a core problem of the game (and boat mechanics). You were focused on the wrong problem. (Did you start making this video during the beta phase? Because it feels like it.) 1:35 They at least changed the self-healing, so hitting crab king at least once is enough to stop it from healing. If you have a problem with self-healing in general, turn your attention to ancient fuel weaver. 1:42 There was a warning on the ground. 1:49 If you use less than 5 red gems (or 2 red gems + pearl's pearl) they won't cause a leak and can be easily ignored. 2:35 Have you considered using an anchor? Also, crab king will taunt you for 10 seconds before healing. 2:44 If you use less than 5 purple gems (or 2 purple gems + pearl's pearl) you can put them to sleep with a pan flute. (Or you can just use some kind of splash damage). If you have a problem with pan flute being a requirement for fight, turn your attention to dragon fly. 2:58 Again, use a pan flute or use splash damage 3:40 yeah, I agree, the boats suck. 3:52 they nerfed the shit out of it. 4:07 the entire history of crab king in a nutshell 4:15 yeah, we just have to accept that sadly Klei can't do it properly. 4:26 that's the entire fucking game. Don't blame it on crab king. The only game that wasn't a wiki reading hell was the base game single-player Don't Starve without DLCs. Everything after that was just read some wiki then play the game. 4:35 yeah, that's a problem, but at least there isn't only a single best strategy. There are currently 6 or 12 plausible gem combination that can change depending on the available gear and the character selections. (There was a problem that spamming orange gems was the best combination, but apparently they've patched it a few days ago. 4:48 show me how a player can defeat ancient fuel weaver without opening the wiki even once. 4:55 ancient fuel weaver 4:56 Klei shot themselves in the foot when they decided that there should be 8008 possible combinations. I think they should've decreased the number gem sockets from 9 to 5 to at least have a chance at play testing.
Before the fight dragged for a long time and had alot of unnecessary micromanagement. Now you almost don't need to do anything in the fight and it ends.
Respectfully, I have to disagree on the Crab King fight. I think that a big part of this fight that isn't being considered in this video is that DST bosses are most likely made with multiplayer in mind. Someone applying patches while the other steers or does damage is a lot of fun, and as someone who plays singleplayer mostly myself, I get how easy it is to forget. But the fights are all balanced around multiple people participating - like how three brightshades clumped up is annoying on singleplayer, and a fun, confusing mess on multiplayer - and why so many bosses have AoE attacks or a lot of minions. I do agree on Winona though, I wish more of her other structures got updates and fun things to play with.
Had an easier time with the new crabk with willow and her lunar flame, and i think most characters are gonna have hard time on this boss if ur playing solo, because having to take care of those claw things and towers are going to be a pain in the ass for most characters
While I agree with you on most of the gameplay issues you brought up (except for the Merm King upgrades, you really don't need the wiki for those.) I disagree with your comments on Winona being less interesting than Wagstaff and Wurt having a boring personality. While Wagstaff's backstory can be seen as more interesting than Winona's (although I find both to be pretty much on the same level) I don't think that means we should just write off Winona as "less interesting". This is a woman who's spent years of her life dedicated to the goal of finding her sister, and on top of that she's an accomplished engineer. Her quotes are also just very fun to read, conveying a personality that I personally enjoy. I also think Winona's backstory has room to be expanded upon. Mostly wishful thinking on my part, but in her short we do see Genevieve, who for some reason was the only one of Winona's coworker's in the short to actually be detailed more than just a stickfigure in the storyboard and does more than just stand around, so I really REALLY think she could be brought up in relation to Winona again at some point. As for what you said about Wurt, violent swamp creature child is just a fun character to be honest.
I love what you did with Wandering Drone's skill tree. It looks awesome, style wise (I dont yet know the skills).Perhaps one day you could explain your design decisions in a video? I'd be very interested for sure.
I'm glad you're interested! yeah I was thinking of doing something like that for the skilltree, probably lower effort compared to the other mod char video (maybe like a 'talk-through' kinda thing)
Im a bit new to don't starve but so far your updates to the game serve as awesome tips to take into gameplay. Quick question though. Whats that cool looking furnace at 11:20 ? Is that a skin? Ive seen crockpots, fire pits, alchemy stations and all of the sorts but ive never seen that furnace and it looks super cool! Is there anyway to obtain it??
I love how Uncompromising mode handles crab king. It's 100% boat-focused, so you can make a boat, get some bumpers, and slam into the boss. Or you can use cannons to deal massive damage.
I didnt watch the video yet, but I think the rework didn't make it a better boss, it made it a faster boss, but also much more boring as well, while adding frustration with the random drowns on the ice sheets.
I strongly disagree with your take on the wurt skill tree's thing about reading the wiki and crab king. Wurt's skills about gifting the king trinkets is pretty self explanetory, I figured them out instantly what is needed and what they do for your merms. crown worn by ancients? thulechite crown easily. I think they cooked with that one. Crab king is a very good build your boss boss now. What your problem is that the breaking points start at 5 gems, so it's the best if you use 2 max 3 different gems. towers will be hard to ram if you have 5 of that gem (or one iridescent and one gem), the ice will become unbreakable when you use 5 blue gems, towers cause leaks when you have 5 red gems etc. So you build your own boss based on your character and playstyle. Like for Willow you can go for 8 purple gems because lunar flames kill crabs and bernie holds them together. winona can go for 8 green gems because she can snipe the claws. If you use grass boats you can go full red gems and ram the towers. you can use panflutes if you don't use purple gems, then you can go for blue and orange gems and telepoof onto the platform. my main problem is the sinking. if your character would automatically hop onto any platform avaliable in case your boat sinks and you are at the edge at your boat, AND you would stay on the ice platforms once they break instead of sinking then I would say thatcrab king is my favourite boss
A rarity for me but I actually disagree with Freddo's take about Crab King. I think the new rework turned it into a really fun boss that heavily incentivizes moving about with your boat instead of sitting still and hitting a damage sponge. Plus, more application to bumpers is always good. Plus, now you have a few seconds of buffer time to deal with the bullcrap going around him before he starts healing. The crab guard phase can be cheesed with a flute, which kinda sucks, I'd like if they made them easier to deal with on a combat level but also made them immune to sleeping.
Tf happened? In beta, the cannons only dealt boat damage, didn't pop holes iirc. This seems counter-intuitive, worst part of original CK for me was the constant leaks
4:26 And to anyone who disagrees with this: what if you were reading a book but every few chapters you were required to go onto the writers website and watch some videos in order to understand what is going on.
crab king is easy quit complaining. he got so much better, he used to be a cheese boss, now hes a boss i would not mind fighting EVEN without the pearl
Na, if it was a good opinion you would have just complained about the towers The minions can be slept His Trident was buffed so much that it nukes him He got a gem nerf needing 5 gems to level up attacks His taunts now give plenty of time to sleep his minions and fuck him up His ice has a timer so drowning is impossible if you pay attention And finally Wigfrid can do him in 2 cycles Making him weaker then ancient guardian vs rond WHICH IS A MASSIVE NERF TO A CRAB THAT COULD INSTAKILL. Now he's a push over with incredible loot. Not an opinion Hard core facts Crab king is a great boss now, fair and balanced vs bee with unlimited minions, toad of doom and moon boss with way too many cycles
I won't agree with Crab King being hard or bad cause it's fair and exciting fight if you particularly use grass boats. Yea, you can still sink and die, but the losses will be smaller with just that. I've practiced fighting pearl crab king multiple times and you can do various things like panfluting the crabs or making the stuck around the barrier cause pathing lol. Weather pain is another way to go. For towers? I break two or three just enough to give me space to kill crab and kite claws to hide behind the boat. I still yet to do a proper fight with a wood boat, but it sure will cost wood if I do plenty of it. Ancient boats seems like a way to go without losing chests.
crab king got better but he's still an ass slop resource drain to kill, unless you use "the right set of gems" on a boss About customizability, it's stupid
As a wurt main I can say the new skill tree is too op because the Murms are basically immortal and have more damage with old wurt you have to work to make them stronger now they’re just stronger by default. Ps you can kill enraged klaws in less than a day with them
"what am i supposed to do there" *when swarmed by crabs* pan flute ? Weather pain ? Preparation is key in this game so its kinda on you if you fail to prepare... Also the towers only penetrate your boat if you slot in too many red gems so avoid doing that your meant to mix and match the rework is solid overall in my opinion Also you said the combat in dst isnt great as you dont have a lot of options and ways to go in and outbof combat, but that's the point the limited nature of the combat makes it far more interesting than having a dodge button
just... use all green gems and completely ignore the claws... This new rework is so easy, you're literally the only person I've seen complaining about it.
@@FreddoFilms yes, I did watch the video. 8 green gems isn’t really a combo. Nobody does actual combinations of different gems, more importantly, in this game, if you try to tackle a boss without looking at the wiki or watching a video, at least learning about the boss, you’re gonna get slammed anyways. You gotta do your research in DST.
@@FreddoFilms Research doesn't have to be some grand thesis, just look up whatever you want to learn about. It's not hard! You don't need to learn every single kiting pattern and crafting recipe and boss strategy and character mechanic in one go, but it's really important to do some research before doing literally ANYTHING new. You can't expect to waltz into a new boss fight in a game that is NOTORIOUSLY unintuitive and doesn't teach you a single thing about surviving and expect to understand all of the mechanics at play. In DST you either get absolutely trashed by trial and error or you take a moment to learn about what you're getting yourself into, and then STILL get trashed the first couple times before that practice sets in. It's not a bad thing, it's expected. You have every single piece of information you need just a few clicks away.
depends how complicated the character is, but even doing the art is a massive undertaking that took me about a month (including items and stuff but not counting skins) so uhh probably a lot
Maybe try some other gems dummy not just all gem's and red ones. i made the fight with all gem's and finish it of with blue gems and i hadn't to fix any leaks so it was fun to fight him
"Herm acshually a boss made to be configurable being hard is because you didn't use the *only* good configuration" the problem isn't the boss being hard, it's because the idea of a boss made to have a 'build a boss' concept that has literally one way to be fought is dumb.
@@FreddoFilms I watched full wideo. You can just put the minons to sleep, u saying that u just need to face tank entire way made me post my comment. Boats aren't slow u just need malbatros beak and you can get zooming... The healing of the boss is good it makes you feel that you need to finish the fidght as quick as possible. U have plenty of options to deal with minions, ice barrier and attacking with any weapon just breaks helaing. Now CK does not even start healing 1st second the phase begins it has a funny war cry animation. Build your boss mechanic is good. OFC there is a best set of gems.... u want all gems to be good and win regardless of what gems u insert but dosen't that make the whole mechanic like pointless? Now u can adjust the fidght's difficulity by inserting certain amounts of gems u literally decide if u want easy or hard fidght and u schould die a lot of times to work out what each gem does. No one forces you to go to wiki u can reset and rollback this is a feature in the game, or u can just drown and not die anyway...... Ice platform breaking almost instantly after healing ends is also fun because you need to keep and eye on the boss and what is does at all times. The fidght isn't even so resourcefull u just need 2 football helmets a bit of healing, ham bat, 3x wooden boats or 1 boat with boat patches and a pan flute. And you say that the daywalker is a good fidght?....... brooooo the daywalker fidght is THE MOST BROAKEN THING in this game. it shows that you do not play regularly... daywalker after every update is boraken uses attacks outside their phases and randomly runs away sometimes........ This thing is a paiiinnnn after every update most broaken boss and ai it has...... To sum up you do not play the game and u want an easy fidght you do not want to learn the boss and how 2 fidght it u just want to kill it with random gems and skip just to get to CC. Have a great day
I didn't say you have to face tank the entire way. 'needing' the malbatross beak is another example of the point I was making about needing to do research to enjoy the game. 'doesn't that make the whole gem mechanic pointless?' yes, it does. I was saying I don't think it's very well designed.
@@FreddoFilms I think that defeating easy bosses like malbatros is normal progression for the game they literally made it spawn more and they nerfed malbatross so it is one of the easiest fidghts in the entire game.... spider queen can cause more trouble than malba. you can always use sails anchor and pirate bandana to make up for the beak speed u just need to learn how to navigate with sails. U implied that face tanking is only option in the video that's why i brought it up. And i think that the fidght is now well designed in recent hotfix they nerfed the best gem combination so now you schould try 1 of each gem and this is probably most efficent but it isn't much of a difference from 4+4 soo now gems arekinda balanced i guess? You just need to prepare for the challenges that ur gems cause that midght make fidght require a bit more resources in general if u want to buff turrets or minions but u can manage that. They are balancing it out now in hotfixes and the fidght is fun and enjoyable. I find ur criticism about it groundless and generic.
thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed
sorry this video was a bit rushed, I had to cram it in before something IRL got in the way, hopefully it's not too noticeable 😅
CORRECTIONS: ok so it turns out they changed a bunch of the gem thresholds/stats right after I finished this video. most of what I said still stands but I guess the gem effects are less harsh with the pearl inserted (notably leaks won't be sprung from artillery).

I think the artilery not causing leaks is big one now you just need boards instead of an ungodly amount of pactches

Fight is 100x better than before and very worthwhile for the loot. I do it every 20 days for the loot and could not imagine doing that with pre-reworked ck..
what loot?
@@agentf672 Very good boat bumpers, but most importantly 2-4 messages in a bottle for the surprising seeds. That way you could get about one sproutrock every fight which is extremely OP if you get a ton of them. Right now I get about 100 gems every 20 days. The crab towers only pop holes in your boat if you plug red gems in CK.
I love the reworked fight. He’s actually cool now and he’s reasonable to kill with relatively low prep especially compared to how he used to be.
Strat?
@@Youmu_Konpaku_ I’ve only fought CK alone without using Pearls pearl.
With friends the fight with the pearl isn’t that bad with just 2-3 people and a couple boats and items to heal yourselves and the boats.
More blue gems = more cycles to kill (use no more than 2)
It’s better to use attacks on the towers rather than ram them in my experience.
You often only need to fight off a couple of guards during the ice phase.
Don’t fall in the water
Just reload/rollback if you die
Okay, that's the first time I think I completely disagree with something you said (about CK). Not trying to be antagonistic or anything, it's just surprising seeing such high dissatisfaction with the rework, after seeing so many people (including me) happy with it. I personally actually think CK has gotten a lot easier actually almost trivial, AG level
It's important to disagree. Hopefully more of us warm up to the fight (I haven't tried it yet).
Mind sharing a strategy then? One that doesn't involve 40 boat patches
Mean while Ameslarii solo’s it with Wes a pan flute a hambat helmet and three grass rafts

CK has awful movesets. Each attack he uses has levels.
1. Near Harmless
2. Challenging
3. Difficult
The gems socketed on CK have effects on these attacks. Socketing just one type of gem many times will lead to an insane fight due to one of his attack being "overlevelled."
*Pearl's Pearl* increases every attack 1 level.
*Red* Gems control the towers. If you socket Pearl's Pearl, you cannot socket a red gem if you want the towers to go to Level 2(in which they will be overly annoying.)
*Purple* Gems increase sleep immunity of crab minions. Adding any purple gems leads to Pan Flute use doubling.
*Orange* Gems increase CK Healing. 2 Orange Gems make CK un-solo-able. (1 advised).
*Blue* Gems increase the strength of the ice. (This also leads to unavoidable healing.)
*Yellow* increases the damage of the towers.
*Green* increases the damage of the claws.
Red and Purple Gems are the gems that easily make the fight spin out of control(don't use them).
Ruins Gems can make the fight manageable or even fun.
OP advises using grass boats and go with 2 stacks of Grass and 1 stack of Twigs
Conclusion/Summary: Klei incentivizes the use of different gems to make the fight as balanced as possible.
I think this _really_ highlights the fact this game is called "don't starve _together,"_ and not "don't starve with occasional multiplayer."
A lot of the gripes with many of these hard elements of the game are almost entirely surpassed by having 3 more people around.
"this" being the crab king fight
my three friends? oh neat, didn't know I had them :P

As someone who has some difficulty getting people together for d&d, you have my sympathies.
after practicing crab king for hours in a cheating world with maxwell, the only way i was able to beat reworked crab king is with a malbatros beak and spamming grass boats. i really do think the core issue of the fight is that boats are still lacking utility and speed after all these years.
I like them for exploration but for a fight where you have to row back and forth it's very tedious
… that has to be a joke right?
i hate to be that guy, but if you tried for hours, with different gem setups and such, and you could only win under those conditions, you were either doing something wrong or have motor issues. the fight isn't too bad as long as you have a balanced gem setup and have plenty of boat repairs and a flute.
@@Hexagrontley yeah... "and a flute". I hate that i HAVE to spam flute, just to deal with minions.

*GEM COMBINATIONS*
-Dont use any blue gems at all.
*PREP*
-Use any oar other than the regular wood one.
-Panflute
-Boat patches incase a tower spawns on your boat.
*THE ACTUAL FIGHT*
#1 After socketing the gems DPS crab king down until he starts his wave attacks.
Yayyy, the dst mechanic/dynamic analysis channel with great editing dropped a new video!!!
Imagine fighting it with max health on your first attempt not knowing any wiser and the adds just make it so he heals every time...)
I'm also really glad to see that they've stuck with updating the oceans more.
But I wanted to explain why it might like his attacks are so punishing:
Each ability now has teers, it isn't just harder but new attacks apear; teer 1 is mostly harmless, 2 is already challenging, 3 is honestly insane.
YES this exactly man, ive been fighting CK solo and its fun, feel like freddo should've tinkered with the gems a little bit better

Was this video recorded during the beta before the update actually released? I lot of the complaints are lessened in the current version.
yeah mostly before the patch that changed the gem effects like 2 days ago
@@FreddoFilms So what's the point?
there's an item called "grass raft". Bring a couple and gg.
6:14 just making sure we remember crab king sucks I see
I don't like the new crab king boss fight that much either, but you've treated it a bit harshly.
Because it feels like it.)
1:35 They at least changed the self-healing, so hitting crab king at least once is enough to stop it from healing.
2:58 Again, use a pan flute or use splash damage
3:40 yeah, I agree, the boats suck.
3:52 they nerfed the shit out of it.
4:07 the entire history of crab king in a nutshell
4:15 yeah, we just have to accept that sadly Klei can't do it properly.
4:55 ancient fuel weaver
4:56 Klei shot themselves in the foot when they decided that there should be 8008 possible combinations. I think they should've decreased the number gem sockets from 9 to 5 to at least have a chance at play testing.
why no one talks about the changes made to the crock pot dishes?
What were the changes?
@@amberhawksong if I remember right the barnacle nigiri and linguinee and the figgy frogwich
I think the new crab king can be a little to much with some gems combinations and the insta drown mechanic
the bee strat kills him even quicker now
As someone who never fought crab king(so you know its 100% accurate and totally true) it looks even harder than before from the trailer💀
When webber skill tree ? Imagine if his skill tree was to transform into other types of spiders or something like that
Had an easier time with the new crabk with willow and her lunar flame, and i think most characters are gonna have hard time on this boss if ur playing solo, because having to take care of those claw things and towers are going to be a pain in the ass for most characters
Why not just put up some grass boats with gunpowder on them to take out the towers?
What gem combinations are working for you guys? Before I was using orange only but now they added the annoying healing interrupt resistance
Come to think of it, Freddo looks a lot like that Wandering drone🤔
I think you might be onto something... new game theory?
I love what you did with Wandering Drone's skill tree. It looks awesome, style wise (I dont yet know the skills).Perhaps one day you could explain your design decisions in a video? I'd be very interested for sure.
I'm glad you're interested! yeah I was thinking of doing something like that for the skilltree, probably lower effort compared to the other mod char video (maybe like a 'talk-through' kinda thing)
Yeah if I could survive long enough to get to him I have massive skill issues
(I’m also playing on switch witch doesn’t help)
Im a bit new to don't starve but so far your updates to the game serve as awesome tips to take into gameplay. Quick question though. Whats that cool looking furnace at 11:20 ? Is that a skin? Ive seen crockpots, fire pits, alchemy stations and all of the sorts but ive never seen that furnace and it looks super cool! Is there anyway to obtain it??
that is the clawfoot skin for the scaled furnace. You can get it through simple spools
I love how Uncompromising mode handles crab king. It's 100% boat-focused, so you can make a boat, get some bumpers, and slam into the boss. Or you can use cannons to deal massive damage.
YES I ACTUALLY LOVE FIGHTING CRAB KING IN UNCOMP but the new update overrides the uncomp version :(
Uncomp being epic as usual
I didnt watch the video yet, but I think the rework didn't make it a better boss, it made it a faster boss, but also much more boring as well, while adding frustration with the random drowns on the ice sheets.
Yeah this is really bad the towers sink if you hit crab king so your you need to spend 4minutes to break the krab cannons is just wrong
your thoughts are serious, and I will take them.
Okay am here and The title is not a good sign, alright lets watch video.
VERY GOOD VID DADDY
UwU
1:21 Melania can stunlock, you heal to full, and one shot you. What do you mean she can only do one of those things?
vigor issue
A rarity for me but I actually disagree with Freddo's take about Crab King. I think the new rework turned it into a really fun boss that heavily incentivizes moving about with your boat instead of sitting still and hitting a damage sponge. Plus, more application to bumpers is always good. Plus, now you have a few seconds of buffer time to deal with the bullcrap going around him before he starts healing. The crab guard phase can be cheesed with a flute, which kinda sucks, I'd like if they made them easier to deal with on a combat level but also made them immune to sleeping.
Isn’t this a boss design to work with multiple players?
no one I know really wants to play this game lol
Why is the technician character inventing stuff when the inventor character doesn't?!
@@ElManReborn616 the running joke is that Wilson is a hack basically and only considers himself to be a scientist (not actually being one) :p
I think your issue with the cannon towers is that you used too many red gems
they rebalanced the gem values right after I posted the video ;(
Quality video as always!
Tf happened? In beta, the cannons only dealt boat damage, didn't pop holes iirc. This seems counter-intuitive, worst part of original CK for me was the constant leaks
Red gems buff the cannonballs. Too many red gems (4 or 5 I believe) cause the cannonballs to poke holes in the boat.
4:26
And to anyone who disagrees with this: what if you were reading a book but every few chapters you were required to go onto the writers website and watch some videos in order to understand what is going on.
crab king is easy
quit complaining. he got so much better, he used to be a cheese boss, now hes a boss i would not mind fighting EVEN without the pearl
yes, imagine having opinions. oh wait...
Na, if it was a good opinion you would have just complained about the towers
The minions can be slept
His Trident was buffed so much that it nukes him
He got a gem nerf needing 5 gems to level up attacks
His taunts now give plenty of time to sleep his minions and fuck him up
His ice has a timer so drowning is impossible if you pay attention
And finally
Wigfrid can do him in 2 cycles
Making him weaker then ancient guardian vs rond WHICH IS A MASSIVE NERF TO A CRAB THAT COULD INSTAKILL. Now he's a push over with incredible loot.
Not an opinion
Hard core facts
Crab king is a great boss now, fair and balanced vs bee with unlimited minions, toad of doom and moon boss with way too many cycles
Also the towers only penetrate your boat if you slot in too many red gems so avoid doing that your meant to mix and match the rework is solid overall in my opinion
Also you said the combat in dst isnt great as you dont have a lot of options and ways to go in and outbof combat, but that's the point the limited nature of the combat makes it far more interesting than having a dodge button
i'd rather the fight just be fun without specific items tbh
just... use all green gems and completely ignore the claws... This new rework is so easy, you're literally the only person I've seen complaining about it.
the fact that you have to use one specific combo for it to be 'easy' is part of the problem. did you watch the video?
@@FreddoFilms yes, I did watch the video. 8 green gems isn’t really a combo. Nobody does actual combinations of different gems, more importantly, in this game, if you try to tackle a boss without looking at the wiki or watching a video, at least learning about the boss, you’re gonna get slammed anyways. You gotta do your research in DST.
that isn't a good thing. why should I have to research to play a game?
You have every single piece of information you need just a few clicks away.
freddo do you make characters?
in what way?
@@FreddoFilms well I want a character made in don't starve together.
I've never done that for someone else before and I definitely wouldn't do it for free
@@FreddoFilms how much?
depends how complicated the character is, but even doing the art is a massive undertaking that took me about a month (including items and stuff but not counting skins)
so uhh probably a lot
ok
Maybe try some other gems dummy not just all gem's and red ones. i made the fight with all gem's and finish it of with blue gems and i hadn't to fix any leaks so it was fun to fight him
I didn't use all red gems... they also reworked the gem effects after I posted the video

Bro u are using wrong set of gems and u so bad this fidght is balanced and easy......... imagine doing dst content not knowing how 2 play the game.
the fact that there is a 'wrong set of gems' is part of the problem. did you watch the video?
