+thunderbreak DC can't really do powerful political pieces because of the nature of its universe - the Marvel Universe just seems more realistic in terms of emulating our world, with similar politics to our world, while the DC Universe is more fantastical and so has to focus on characters and superhero interactions. Marvel has SHIELD and the World Council and the UN, and their political decisions directly impact the Avengers. While DC stories sometimes focus on the UN, the JL isn't really bound by such human political endeavors and the politics end up being more of a backdrop to the story.
swng "realistic" agreed however I think in my opinion DC has the edge. Their characters are much more psychological and philosophical, questioning the very fabric of reality with Sandman and Lucifer, and doubting the true existence of humanity with characters like Joker. Marvel emulates real world politics well however, it seems to me that in turn their characters became much more one dimensional amidst the 2010s, back in the good old days from the 50s to early 90s Marvel was basically a perfect blend of politics and philosophy, which was why it was doing far better than DC back then with the comic industry. Spider-Man was a good example of that blend in the sense that his concept and character was political as a character that dwelled within a world of the media portraying him as a delinquent and that he has to prove to the world that he is not who the media says he is and he philosophical in that throughout his run in the 60s he's been dealing with the concept of responsibility and doing the right thing, villains and heroes questioning his morality throughout all of his great stories and arcs and there are much more examples of fantastical heroes within marvel that people don't like to admit, Ghost Rider, Wolverine, Namor, the original human torch... Nowadays Marvel is way too focused on developing the political side of their stories, thus characters like Ghost Rider and Wolverine are either sidelined or completely forgotten because their characters are not solely or intertwined within politics, unlike the rest of the X-Men Wolverine has a theme to his character all on his own, that's why he's the most remembered. Wolverine is a hero born in the past but unlike captain America, Wolverine was not focused on the American Propaganda aspect, he was much more focused on the old gritty western part. Ghost Rider well again not exactly political, a man who sells his soul to the devil so that his father figure can live. Marvel is just too boring now.

Personally I just like the fact that Superman is so powerful and important in DC universes that no matter what, his apparence or lack thereof has drastic change on the universe. He lands on Kansas and becomes the Superman we all know and some of us love (some of us hate him for stupid reasons). He lands in Metropolis and gets captured and never becomes Superman, otherwise he may have been able to stop Wonder Woman and Aquaman from waging war. He lands in Russia and along with Luthor, improves a lot of the world and after his downfall, the Earth becomes a Utopia and in this story, he changes how the war goes and how the world changes. That's what I like about Superman, he is powerful and while there are characters just as or more powerful than him, he is the most influential, in universe and out. Even if you hate him you want to see him fight someone like Goku or Batman and its a pretty big achievement if someone can kick his ass, some cool characters or concepts are inspired by him like Icon, Blue Marvel, Hyperion, Sentry, etc. He is a cool character, powerful enough where he can make a difference in big events, influential enough to where even if hated, can sstill make something exciting and it seems that be he American, German or Russian, still just wants to help the human race.

It's less about him being boring/bad character and more to do with him being OP. There's never any tension for a character like that, no potential of this being "his last fight". Superman is always just "as powerful as he needs to be"... and a lot of people feel that it's lazy writing, a cop-out if you will.
I love atlernate takes on Superman's origins like the one where he landed in the UK, Red Son, and now Nazi Superman. It sounds like Superman secretly wanted the Nazi Regime to be toppled by the end of the story much like how Mirror Spock came to the conclusion that the Terran Empire was destined to fall much like all empires before it.
Pretty much. He was only too aware that his paradise was built on foundations of mass murder and torture. And Overgirl's death in Final Crisis was pretty much the final straw for him. He could no longer fool himself into thinking it was worth it. Plus of course that house-shaped thing lurking in his dreams -- Lord Broken of The Gentry -- was preying on his soul.
This was an awesome video. I was waiting for one more guitar strum at the end. The music really matched the mood you set. And, I didn't know anything from that storyline. Thanks, Rob! Keep it up.
+Imperator Augustus his main criticism is that he's a boyscout. but people fail to realize thor, Martian manhunter, flash, Captain america, colossus, green Lantern, wonder woman and shazam are all boyscouts
DC makes superman evil so that they can write those batman elseworlds so they can come up with all that pis and plot armor so that batman can beat him up and look good. that's why I'm starting to read marvel cause DC is all about batman. they have saturated their comics with just batman. and have watered down all the other superheroes intelligence and they have given superman a bunch of new out of the blue weaknesses like to magic. and DC also doesn't want to give time and attention to Martian manhunter who by the way is a super boyscout.
Imperator Augustus my point is batman fans criticize superman for being a boyscout but wonder woman and Martian manhunter are just as boyscout and girls costs and nobody critics them
I've been watching your channel for a long time. A friend and I were having a discussion and we disagreed on stupid little detail. He couldn't find it after 5 minutes but I instantly knew the answer was in this video. Thank you for all these years! I hope I make it to see many more. I enjoy that you bring up the writer's name saying they tell the reader details by showing instead of just telling. Collaborating with the artist to make a great comic.
+Wonder Brat I dont find classic superman interesting but the concept that superman is only a hero based on perspective is very interesting. The idea that regardless of how much power he may have he is just as much a product of his environment as anyone else is interesting. plus a superman that doesn't always succeed is something I like to see in a superman story. I occasionally do like the light hearted superman story but overall I like versions if superman like injustice, red son, or even this version of superman. injustice is probably my favorite superman.
Personally my favorite version of superman is injustice. I can see how he'd just snap like that, and honestly he makes a hell of a lot more sense as a self righteous villian who was trying to do the right thing and just got tired of kid gloves, got tired of sitting by and watching the moronic human race being petty and destroying ourselves and so took it into his own hands, gloves off.
Before ww2 and before the USA entered it, the axis were taking about Superman and supermen in their languages. Friedrich Nietzsche also talked about it. In an alternate universe there could be a world where Superman is pro axis.
Kingdom Come Superman is my personal favorite. Despite losing the people he cared about the most, KC Superman stayed true to his values even though the rest of the world abandoned the notions of truth and justice. He was flawed no doubt, but his ideals and his intentions remained strong.
I like your presentations. I've been reading comics for 60 years now. You put some good perspective that I haven't always been able to see. So I hope you keep up the good work.
Bro... Lol. Tens of millions were not killed by the Germans during WW2. It was 265,000 tops (mostly from disease) in their entire empire throughout the course of the war and that's a number given by a neutral organization The Red Cross. If you mean in this comic since its fantasy/alternate history then maybe but that's mainly if the artist decided to entirely ignore the fact National Socialism is not at all about genocide.
Rob, I can't tell you how much I really love this ! I listen to all of your videos on my way to work every day! And being in the military, I don't get to read all the new stories when they come out, and when I do get home, they're impossible to find... But you make a great substitute for those, and you bring up points that I never even think of ! I'm a proud member of the ROBCORP
alex olvera, they also gained the advanced alien technology of the ship and any and everything else that baby Kal-El had in his possession. Consider the knowledge archive that Superman eventually uses in his Fortress of Solitude. The tech is easily as game breaking as a super baby ever could be.
i like both iterations of Superman...its a great way to create new stories and they can tackle a varied series of issues. Thanks Rob for another great video!!!!!
Hands down one of the most interesting versions of a super hero, and this comic seems way better than I'd have imagined. Very interesting philosophical view, as well. Also a great anylyzations of the characters
Thank you! I love your DC comics vids. Please do all of the Multiversity series! I could really use your input on each individual one AND the Multiversity as a whole!
I like stories like these for any character i like when marvel and Dc change things up. Thats why im loving all new all different marvel. I love the female thor something new compared to the same old same old. I wish dc would do more stories like this. Take your characters in new directions. Thats why im loving the Truth arc with superman right now its refreshing to see superman out of his element.
Natasel He could have at any point before, that's what makes it great. He was basically still superman, he just lost the boyscout and didn't turn into Injustice.
These videos are fascinating, as always, especially when you delve into such depth on a topic. And that accompanying music is breathtaking, Rob. If you contracted those musicians to create this specifically for this video, it truly becomes elevated to a pure work of art FOR THE MIND. And that is a strangely unique and wonderful creation. Thank you so much.
Whereas the standard line of Superman tales are about as engaging as a raw egg, any tale that shows a twist and character development - including one with Superman - has merit. I enjoyed this simply because it was different. I would like to see further development of this series, with perhaps a new rebellion, and the conclusion of Oberman's morality crisis. I'm betting it would end in it's own "Batman V Superman" type of conflict.
PB42189 You have a Muslim extremist and a US soldier, the soldier will say the extremist is evil, and the extremist will say the soldier is evil ... it is relative on the perspective of the person.
Lord Knightyme so claiming another persons life is insignificant based on phenotypes is "relatively evil"? the fact you're trying to rationalize evil either shows your lack of well being for the human condition or you're just trying to make a point, a very small point, in the greater argument, if you are ok with torturing and killing someone because they dont fit your ideal appearance then yea, i guess you would think what you're doing isnt evil, but then its a safe bet you're not a reasonable person in which case having a conversation about actual good and evil vs perceived good and evil is pointless........
+PB42189 What the?? Where in the multiverse did you get those from? At no point have I made any claims in of the types you bring up, yet you seem to have plucked them from the eather. You call me names, you make arguments against claims I have not made, and make an assertion as to my character based on those claims. My good person, that is what is called a strawman, if you are unfamiliar with the term, Google can help you.
+Lord Knightyme I actually never called you any name, but you said good and bad is relative, it's not, what prompted my lengthy response was the context of your statement, while watching a nazi superman video you decided to say good and bad is relative, and now you're back pedalling
I actually prefer the boy scout Superman. I know people find that boring but to me its the heart of what a superhero is supposed to be. We can't relate because doing the right thing all the time is something we can't fathom us doing. Superman may struggle with it at times but he will do what is right. To me that is what a superhero is supposed to be
+marem19 Agreed. It's vastly harder to do what is true and right than to do what Batman does, which is to bend the rules to achieve his personal wishes, regardless of those wishes being right or wrong. It's sad that people can't even relate to someone that does what's right, because they themselves are too weak and broken to choose right.
+marem19 Exactly. Still I'm wondering if this world (Earth X/10) can be redeemed at all with or without Overman's help. I mean, wasn't it stated that all the other races on the planet had been killed off? How do you come back from that even if Overman somehow develops all the conscience and empathy of the "boy scout" Superman?
Actually Rob, I love your channel. You seem to be a Marvel Guy mostly, most of your videos are about Marvel. But for this video, I actually love the different versions of Superman. I also love your take on how people view Superman but not the actions that defined him thru every iteration.
Its nice that there are platforms that serve to further "individual investigations of the truth." Unfortunately I am yet to see many that focus on the truth of "one step in the right direction is not an end all be all." And that putting words to a concept while can be a blessing can also be a curse. The standard that we should be holding constantly is so old and so foundational it's sitting in plain sight and still being missed... (From a heart of high-fictions perspective...) Thank you for the post/subject. -b
I don't know about anyone else but "What If?" and "Elseworlds" are some of my favorite stories. Being able to see your favorite characters in a new light without affecting their main universe selves was always awesome. Still have a bunch of each in my collection and still pull them out and read them from time to time.
I prefer bad superman, because an overpowered god being the villain makes the good guys challenge all the more harder, and superman's reasoning to do what he does even more poignant. I think my favorite 'bad' superman story was red son. I really enjoyed everything about that story.
I was super nervous when I first saw this comic, not sure where it was going to go. But that whole discussion in the Eagle's Nest made it clear that part of this is a commentary on modern imperialist countries with their horrific histories of their own genocides and how they push those histories under the rug for the sake of "peace" and "order." One thing I wished was more clearly shown was the fact that while the genocide against these different groups was no longer happening in the same way, there does still seem to be strong amounts of political and economic oppression happening against these group.
I find DC more philosophical and marvel more political. DC like to mess with your logic and marvel like to mess with your conscience.
+thunderbreak DC can't really do powerful political pieces because of the nature of its universe - the Marvel Universe just seems more realistic in terms of emulating our world, with similar politics to our world, while the DC Universe is more fantastical and so has to focus on characters and superhero interactions.
I love when rob is monotone like this and he’s just talking versus when he’s excited and stumbles over his words and rambles.
That slow pan down on Hitler using the toilet was scary.
This was an awesome video. I was waiting for one more guitar strum at the end. The music really matched the mood you set. And, I didn't know anything from that storyline. Thanks, Rob! Keep it up.
its so weird how dc constantly wants to makes superman the villain
+Miguel O'Hara Probably because his main critisim is he's a boy scout. Which is slightly true it gets stale after a while.
+Imperator Augustus his main criticism is that he's a boyscout. but people fail to realize thor, Martian manhunter, flash, Captain america, colossus, green Lantern, wonder woman and shazam are all boyscouts
DC makes superman evil so that they can write those batman elseworlds so they can come up with all that pis and plot armor so that batman can beat him up and look good. that's why I'm starting to read marvel cause DC is all about batman. they have saturated their comics with just batman. and have watered down all the other superheroes intelligence and they have given superman a bunch of new out of the blue weaknesses like to magic. and DC also doesn't want to give time and attention to Martian manhunter who by the way is a super boyscout.
carlos vega What exactly is your point?
Imperator Augustus my point is batman fans criticize superman for being a boyscout but wonder woman and Martian manhunter are just as boyscout and girls costs and nobody critics them
I feel like this is a weird fantasy spin-off of "A man in high castle".
I did NAZI that coming
OHHHHHHH SNAP!!!!!!
+RychecksWorld I like this guy.
+ComicsExplained I've been noticed by the king
👏👏👏
+ComicsExplained Anne Frankly I don't care.
This was the best issue of Multiversity. So deep!
jabezcreed did Jim Lee draw this
Yes.
Pax Americana was way better.
I like how Superman turning evil always ends up in Evil Superman losing in the end.
+TheKimTeam He should win. He won in the Halloween special.
this is much more interesting and entertaining than classic superman.
How?
+Wonder Brat I dont find classic superman interesting but the concept that superman is only a hero based on perspective is very interesting. The idea that regardless of how much power he may have he is just as much a product of his environment as anyone else is interesting. plus a superman that doesn't always succeed is something I like to see in a superman story. I occasionally do like the light hearted superman story but overall I like versions if superman like injustice, red son, or even this version of superman. injustice is probably my favorite superman.
Red son is better than whatever the fuck this is
+Shawn Zamir FFXV when I think of classic superman I think of the golden age version not the boy scout version
I agree, fuck normal superman
Personally my favorite version of superman is injustice.
I can see how he'd just snap like that, and honestly he makes a hell of a lot more sense as a self righteous villian who was trying to do the right thing and just got tired of kid gloves, got tired of sitting by and watching the moronic human race being petty and destroying ourselves and so took it into his own hands, gloves off.
That's my favourite DC story in general. My other 2 are under the Red Hood and Red Son
Mine too. Superman is not evil this is justice. slaughter human beings who cares about human animals
Before ww2 and before the USA entered it, the axis were taking about Superman and supermen in their languages. Friedrich Nietzsche also talked about it. In an alternate universe there could be a world where Superman is pro axis.
an übermensch is a philosophical concept not a character
ZΔCH In German it means Superman
www.google.com/search?q=superman%20in%20german
That moment when you're watching a video on Superman becoming a Nazi and hear "categorical Imperative" and "Emmanuel Kant"
Lots of buzzwords, yes
You have an Impecable taste in music
Kingdom Come Superman is my personal favorite. Despite losing the people he cared about the most, KC Superman stayed true to his values even though the rest of the world abandoned the notions of truth and justice. He was flawed no doubt, but his ideals and his intentions remained strong.
Love the soundtrack over your channel. Interesting and chilling.
I like your presentations. I've been reading comics for 60 years now. You put some good perspective that I haven't always been able to see. So I hope you keep up the good work.
Original Superman will always be a favourite but I do enjoy these other re-tellings of Superman from across the multiverse. Keep ém coming Rob.
A man that sits and watches tens of millions die when they could easily is a villain period.
Bro...

Great music. Thanks for including Santaolalla video in the end
+juan lopez
U know what song is that bud!? realy nice!
+juan lopez
It seems to be the "Last of Us" soundtrack but i'm not sure..
I love when you do DC!! Thanks!!
Rob, I can't tell you how much I really love this !
I listen to all of your videos on my way to work every day!
And being in the military, I don't get to read all the new stories
when they come out, and when I do get home, they're impossible
to find... But you make a great substitute for those, and you bring up
points that I never even think of ! I'm a proud member of the ROBCORP
Nazi Superman sounds metal as fuck.
+Strider119119 Sounds pretty techno to me.
+Strider119119 I was thinking smooth ceramic, myself!
Loving the DC and DC-multiverse vids! Keep them rolling, please!
Wouldn't the baby have been too young to effect the course of the war?
alex olvera, they also gained the advanced alien technology of the ship and any and everything else that baby Kal-El had in his possession. Consider the knowledge archive that Superman eventually uses in his Fortress of Solitude. The tech is easily as game breaking as a super baby ever could be.
I know Reich?
i say make plenty more DC comics explained i love your videos personally
I really like the designs of these characters
i like both iterations of Superman...its a great way to create new stories and they can tackle a varied series of issues. Thanks Rob for another great video!!!!!
Love your channel, Rob. Could you please leave a link for the music at the end? Thanks!
Hands down one of the most interesting versions of a super hero, and this comic seems way better than I'd have imagined. Very interesting philosophical view, as well. Also a great anylyzations of the characters
That's some quality music
Thank you! I love your DC comics vids. Please do all of the Multiversity series! I could really use your input on each individual one AND the Multiversity as a whole!
all versions ^^
cause i think every angle should be explored to give us more context to the characters we love :D
This sounds like one of the best superman what ifs. a lot of indirect referencing, and the ending, brilliant.
Wow thanks for showing how much work you put into these videos. I didn't you used a live orchestra! Great video man.
Excellent show, once again. I must ask, who is playing the music at the end of the video?
You are my favorite comic reviewer because of all your details and just fun reads thx for the content.P.S. Please do a black panther vid
I know man. You know they did mix up a bunch of other DC things, for one they gender switched the entire league and made the men women and vice versa.
One of my favorite videos you have uploaded. Wish you could go into the story deeper, with an ending to the comic. But that'd be spoilers :/
wow. this was really deep. I read superman red son, but this story just seems more contained. is there any more to the story?
its really a treat when you bring us a character that 90 perccent of us will never know, and you give us insight about them. thanks and keep it up
Red Son Super man is my favorite Superman
+likenem you mean red sun?
PB42189
My bad
Mine too.
No, Red Son is correct.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman:_Red_Son
Red Son... Red Son over Paradise. As the sun sets, you cannot forget the Red Son over Paradise.
I understood like 10% of that information and 90% of it went flying out of my left ear.
I personally enjoyed the Gods and Monsters version, while similar to classic superman, he does not fear doing something if it needs to be done.
Natasel
exactly, it was not the same biological person, but was the one put into the shoes.
Natasel
He could have at any point before, that's what makes it great. He was basically still superman, he just lost the boyscout and didn't turn into Injustice.
Natasel
Nah, the boyscout would have tried to save Brainiac. He's also only half of Zod.
Surprised you don't have a Superboy Prime explained, he's easily the most interesting alternative superman
your production value has gone way up. bravo!
Soooooo this is basically DC wolfenstein
It's neat when you peep his old videos and hear how much more bold and vocal he's gotten.
It suits him and I like it
Whereas the standard line of Superman tales are about as engaging as a raw egg, any tale that shows a twist and character development - including one with Superman - has merit. I enjoyed this simply because it was different. I would like to see further development of this series, with perhaps a new rebellion, and the conclusion of Oberman's morality crisis. I'm betting it would end in it's own "Batman V Superman" type of conflict.
Comics get better the more I learn about them. I might be on this channel for a long time.
Good and bad are relative terms, that said I do enjoy alternate universe stories as it allows for a different perspective.
+Lord Knightyme lol nah, nazi is bad, if you dont think so its because youre a fucked up person
Intresting spin on the bad guy superman. Keep up the videos rob!
How do you come back from that even if Overman somehow develops all the conscience and empathy of the "boy scout" Superman?
thank you you bring art back to comic books
I always wanted more from this Superman story line. I mean it’s not the “end” because clearly The Nazi party is global.
Yep. The destruction of Metropolis was just the conclusion of one act, really. Overman's story is basically a Wagnerian tragedy.
I love these videos. So educational Thanks for all you do man
how come you never put the names of the songs you use in your video description?
Now we need a Fight between Superman, Overman, and Red Son
evil superman > good superman
Actually Rob, I love your channel. You seem to be a Marvel Guy mostly, most of your videos are about Marvel.
But for this video, I actually love the different versions of Superman. I also love your take on how people view Superman but not the actions that defined him thru every iteration.
hi rob,
would youmind giving us the name of the background music group?
thank you in advance
Its nice that there are platforms that serve to further "individual investigations of the truth." Unfortunately I am yet to see many that focus on the truth of "one step in the right direction is not an end all be all." And that putting words to a concept while can be a blessing can also be a curse. The standard that we should be holding constantly is so old and so foundational it's sitting in plain sight and still being missed... (From a heart of high-fictions perspective...) Thank you for the post/subject.
-b
Do you have any videos on Cassandra Cain?
Love to hear about the different versions of superman and heros like him, a new spin to what i feel is a pretty stale concept.
Keep up the good work!
"crisis of infinite earths video will be in the description"
it's not.
This version of superman actually salutes instead of pointing his fist forward while flying.
so what did the eye tower represent? sorry I'm a bit dumb today
That's what I really love about The Boys. Normal people having to somehow take on all these heroes chief among them a superman knock-off.
To be honest, the idea of a Nazi superman is terrifying to the point that it gives me chills.
but I think he will still be in the side of good in the end. Like soldier killing not because of hate but for their country
first captain america now superman??? how the fuck did germany lose?
Because we had spies on the inside
Ultima Key who? joker? he did say he hates nazis
And here I thought I'd seen all your videos.
who is playing the music for your background? It sounds wonderful.
Please do some more good versions of superman, but all versions are good. I like your dc videos btw!
Music at the end?
keep making dc stuff! i like a good balance of material between the big two!
I was super nervous when I first saw this comic, not sure where it was going to go. But that whole discussion in the Eagle's Nest made it clear that part of this is a commentary on modern imperialist countries with their horrific histories of their own genocides and how they push those histories under the rug for the sake of "peace" and "order." One thing I wished was more clearly shown was the fact that while the genocide against these different groups was no longer happening in the same way, there does still seem to be strong amounts of political and economic oppression happening against these group.
loving the content rob
I am against the Nazis but I thought this was interesting
just love how I have to sit thru a sprint add at the beginning of your video and then10 mins in I have to watch another damn sprint add....
