    Wondering if I missed something, and I apologize for the length of this.
    The ship's logbook ...
    It is mentioned that "they" (I'm guessing officials of the US Navy) checked the Indianapolis' ship's logbook to verify certain facts, like if her captain actually requested a destroyer escort, and other such details.
    A. The ship was sinking fast, chaos and confusion were rampant, practically no onboard ship communication was possible, fires were swiftly consuming the vessel and her crew, hundreds never even got a chance to abandon ship...
    Question 1 ~ Exactly who had the presence of mind to grab the ship's logbooks and jump overboard with them?
    B. With the utter nightmare of being in the water for days on end, hearing the screams of their fellow sailors, the baking sun of the day, the freezing water at night, and the mind numbing horror of not having food or water of many days...
    Question 2 ~ how were the ship's logbooks kept safe in the corrosive oil coated waters and who put them above his own well being all those days?

    • @WartimeStories
      @WartimeStories  Рік тому +44

      Great questions! There is some confusion about the logbooks here so I may have done a poor job conveying which logbooks were being referenced.
      The first thing I'd point out is that evidence regarding the destroyer escort piece was covered during McVay's Court of Inquiry hearing. Nothing to do with ships logs or radio logs of any kind, but rather his spoken testimony during his pretrial hearings is what was referenced there.
      The controversial logbooks in question are _not_ the books from the ship, but rather the radio logs from the various naval stations in and around Leyte/Tacloban/etc in the Philippines. As for ship's log mentioned--about where she was stationed during the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima--well, she ported numerous times after that. So those logs were likely taken off the ship and replaced at various intervals.
      As you say, I expect the Indy's final logbooks were lost when she sank. But even if they were somehow saved, those log books would offer no evidence of whether the damaged ship had transmitted a signal successfully, nor whether the radio stations 600 miles away would have received the message.
      The movie portrays that the radio message was a verbal message. That is incorrect. I believe the correct understanding is that the SOS message was sent out in morse code.
      So maybe the confusion was the impression that the logbooks on the Indy would have shown that the Indy's radiomen confirmed (in writing) that they had successfully contacted and spoken with someone at a shore station? That is certainly what the film portrayed, but not what happened in reality. It was just an SOS sent out in code, and since the radio equipment appeared to be operating properly, Jack Miner could only assume the message had been successfully transmitted.

    • @missy8758
      @missy8758 Рік тому +4

      Those are some good questions. If I’m on a sinking ship that just got hit by torpedoes, I’m not thinking about saving logbooks. I honestly still don’t know if Clair account is a myth or not. Just because there is no evidence doesn’t meant that Clair was mistaken about what happened. Also just because it takes a lot of work to cover something up doesn’t mean that it wasn’t concealed. Maybe the families of the men on that ship could have sued for negligence if what Clair said was true, and that would have cost them more money then covering it up. Then again maybe Clair could have been mistaken. I don’t know.

    The problem with history is that, more often than not, myth tends to to become accepted fact (shootout at the O.K. Corral anyone?). It is refreshing and comforting, not to mention enlightening, when facts are brought forward and spotlighted that brush away the myths and reveal the truth of events. I appreciate the time and effort you have put in to make sure the stories you present are more than just "stories". It would be easy to simply present things to us as they have always been told (to be honest, this was the first time I had heard the story of the Indianapolis' sinking, and I'm 45!) and leave it at that. That you have taken the time to correct your own work and, let us know about it, shows how much you care about the material and that you aren't just "telling stories".
    I have the utmost respect for you. Not only for your service to our country, but for the commitment you have made to making and running this channel. I have enjoyed everything you have done so far and look forward to what you will be putting out in the future. Keep it up and thank you.

    I agree that videos like this should be rare... the exception rather than the rule. At the same time, such information to make corrections on not only a prior video, but also a multitude of media sources, is invaluable. Such efforts should truly be appreciated. So while you should, in my opinion and in agreement with your opening statements, limit how often such videos are made, I would also implore you that any time a video like this MUST be made, that it be met with the same level of attention to detail and effort. Don't fret the length of such videos... it would be better to present videos like this as a single, long video as opposed to episodic ones like Roy Benavidez and Man Against Wolf.
    Again, you have outdone yourself on content. Take care of yourself, and your family; that is paramount. Your true fans will still be here. Luke, as a faithful listener to your stories i want to say that as a storyteller your honesty and determination for researching the facts after you had already made the Indy videos knowing they needed to be amended while setting aside a promise to your viewers truley shows your integrity in regards of these stories and your channel. I personally would rather a delay in your content for the most accurate accounts of these stories. Keep up the good work and never compromise a timeline for the truth as best as you can tell it. You’re a good man for clearing all this up and bringing to life the true story, I consider myself a WW2 nut and the facts I had no idea how really embellished and all the cover that happened. Was truly shocked,sickened and so sad for what happened to the captain. Those involved should be ASHAMED of themselves.

    It seems strange that only a lowly security guard not directly connected in any official capacity with the operations of the radio shack would be the only one to come forward with a claim of an SOS signal being received. It sounds like he just wanted to get his name in the newspaper.

    Thanks for putting this out! I came to the channel for tales about UFOs and the supernatural and was moved to tears about the story about Captain McVays fate. It was a no-brainer to watch this episode as well to get more out of the story. Truth and facts matter. Well done!

    God bless you for your integrity and honesty. Formerly a grunt's military spouse, I can attest to the rareness of transparency in the military and how valuable scruples and wisdom are, when executed by one who is willing to be a person of character, not self-gain or ease of circumstances. Thank you!!!
    BTW, the quality of production and the attention to detail is wonderful. Keep up the great work!

    You're a good dude! Thank you for your service and for telling these stories w as much truth as possible.
    Your wartime stories are amazing and extremely entertaining.
    To be 100% honest, it's how you tell them that got my attention in the first place. But now knowing that the stories are true, (for the most part) draws me in even more!
    I'm a huge fan of your channel and hope you decide to keep going for a long time.
    Once again, thank you. Have a great day!

    First of all, God Bless you for your service. I will start by saying thank you for all your hard work in bringing the truth of this incident to light. I will admit, by the end of video 2 as taps was being played, I had to stop the video because I just couldn't take it. That being said, I wanted to congratulate you on your exemplary efforts to honor the truth above finding who was "to blame", going so far as to advocate for individuals who have been demonized in the retelling. No one may ever know exactly what happened, but your efforts have served to clear instead of further muddying the waters. Job well done.

    Thank you for bringing this to light to me. That part from Jaws was always one of my favorites. I appreciate the info about what they got wrong. I won't presume to know if the inaccuracies were deliberate or not. I will just continue to enjoy Robert Shaw's delivery/performance. Again, thank you for bring this to us and I do greatly appreciate the work you do with these videos. As many have said, you do what you need to do and I'll continue to watch when they're released. Luke, for what it's worth I had rather have an accurate account of such an important historical event. Thanks for going back and making the corrections. The Halloween episode will get here when it does. It just means I get to stretch out one of my favorite holidays a little longer than normal. Watching you figure this whole thing out over the past few months has actually been a story in it's self if that makes any sense. One thing that has come across is that you're a very humble guy. You're doing a good job, keep it up.

    Its so good to see a true historic youtube channel, you tried and verified the story, gathered all data you could and made a awesome job! You told the whole story, making it clear you had made a few mistakes and why you made it, because fiction can get in the way of truth. It is so hard to find a youtube channel like yours! Keep doing this incredible work! In this age og half trues and enbelishment, it is a good trait to be always seeking the truth
