      I think that a movie about the Wolves of Turku (one of the incidents mentioned in the video) would be cool. Pretty much 2 or 3 wolves killed and ate 22 children, and attacked 2 more, who narrowly escaped, near the town of Turku (pronounced TOOR-ku). The locals hunted these wolves and killed many before they caught the actual wolves responsible for the attacks. It is an unfortunate story for the children and teenagers killed and the people affected, along with the wolves that were killed in the attempt to kill the culprits, but it is a very interesting story.

    I'm shocked. This is the first popular account I've found of predation on humans by wolves here on YT that touches on the complexity of the issue. Overall well researched to give a balanced view on a very challenging topic, without succumbing to the temptation to embelish existing accounts or neglect to point out sources that are untraceable,biased or unreliable. The writers/researchers have done a great job.

    • @WartimeStories
      @WartimeStories  2 роки тому +6

      Quite a compliment, thank you!
      I was honestly somewhat oblivious to the wolf controversy until _after_ finishing the Part One video and reading through the comments.
      Ended up rewriting the second part to address that, once it was made apparent. Very interesting study, overall. And no less interesting for me to realize that the idea of mankind competing against itself for resources-war-would be similar to our experience living alongside wolves, another large, intelligent and highly social predator.
      We’ve decimated quite a few human populations, not to mention animals. Whether that was morally justified is the argument, I suppose. But of course, I’m not here to win arguments, simply to tell stories.

I remember the BtS episode covering the SS Kamloops sinking, where wolf predation was mentioned despite them being absent from Isle royale at the time, so I was pleasantly surprised with this! With the production quality this channel and BtS have, people will listen. And so thank you for taking that responsibility to heart. Keep up the good work.

    When I served in Iraq, there was a large population of feral dogs. These were not your typical stray. These were dogs that had lived in the wilds for years, or even generations. They had become something of the apex predators of Iraq, posing dangers to my fellow soldiers and the Iraqi populace. We had heard of the dogs killing livestock and harassing our caravans, but what drove it home to not only myself, but to everyone in my unit, was when one of them came into our FOB, and tried to take a chunk out of my leg. We had to organize a team to put down the pack before they caused any real damage. It wasn't a pretty sight.
    I find the similarities between what happened to me and my unit, and the events that took place in the cold months of 1917... haunting.

    This story I first heard from a miniseries on National Geographic called "Strange Days on Planet Earth." Four different episodes about environmental issues that didn't always make the headlines but could work synergistically to make each other worse. One whole episode was devoted to the consequences of wiping out a predator population completely.
    When wolves were eliminated from Yellowstone National Park, the consequences were not intuitive. After they were gone, the aspen forests ceased growing, willow trees began to disappear from the river banks, along with the grass. They eroded further and further, and beavers, ducks and geese were left without homes. The fish population declined, the current was too fast. Elk proliferated, some of them making a nuisence of themselves at rutting time by smashing their reflections in the hoods of cars. Scavenger populations declining were only the most obvious form of damage, but their loss reduced the amount of nutrients available for plants and trees to grow. And so plantlife suffered. Sickly elk and elderly elk wandered in the open, frequently getting into trouble as there was nobody to scare them away from damaging property in the nearby area. These elk were the original perpetrators of the aspen growth slowdown and the loss of willow trees. Without wolves to make them more cautious and keep the population down, desperate sick and old elk went looking for food in areas they shouldn't. This destroyed the willow trees beavers relied on. Without the beavers to dam the rivers fish, duck, frog, goose and other waterfowl populations declined in the park. When wolves were returned to the park, the reduction in elk population began a slow healing process as all these effects began to reverse themselves.
    Wolves are not sapient, and they don't understand abstract concepts like wildlife management or warfare. Humans do. Its up to us to be wise and cautious when dealing with them. Other creatures depend on them to exist, even if their connection doesn't seem obvious. Removing the cornerstone of the proverbial pyramid, caused the rest to begin to crumble. Am I calling for us to hug the wolves and sing koombaya? No. But I am calling for us to leave massive predators alone, do not disturb their homes and lands if you can help it. They are the masters of our northern forests, not lions and tigers, but sometimes the occasional bear (oh my!)
    To me, as a nature lover the cases of wolves attacking battlefields and the sites of earthquakes makes sense as something they would do. Their JOB is as a cleanup crew. Our bodies are a resource as much as water, soil, and things like oxygen or phosphorous, if they aren't broken down and digested other organisms, such as insects, can't use those nutrients and the entire ecosystem crumbles. hundreds of millions of years ago, the carboniferous era brought dense oxygen levels in the atmosphere and bugs the size of eagles, spiders the size of manhole covers, because trees developed wood to defend themselves from fungi and the fungi couldn't recycle those nutrients. It only ended when fungi discovered how to break down wood. One tiny missing piece in the chain could be all it takes to make radical changes to our environment.

    Part 2 was worth the wait. Another terrific story I hadn't known about and from a theater of that war not often written about. On a lighter note, this reminds me of a couple of battles in Africa during the same conflict. One when a fight was interrupted by a pissed off Non-Aligned rhinoceros who charged both sides. I’ll try to keep it short, but I was a line medic with the US Army stationed in Alaska. We had a training mission where we went and “fought” the Stryker brigade stationed in Ft. Wainwright which is in Fairbanks. This all took place in a stretch of wilderness called Donnelly Training Area. It’s a pretty hilly and awfully cold place during the winter. I remember being out there for about a week when me, my senior medic and company First Sergeant went “walking” (we were scouting the other unit Stryker positions) when we noticed a black flash darting across the road in front of us. It was night time in winter time alaska so you can make out black stuff on the ground because everything is white. Then we saw it again, only this time we started hearing things surround us. We didn’t have any live rounds and we knew it wasn’t enemy squads trying to flank us because there where no enemy patrols happening in the area for fear of our sniper/forward observer platoon. The noises started to close to within about 50ish meters of us when we decided that it was time to turn white flashlights on and just start walking the other direction. Me, my senior medic and my Army ranger of a First Sergeant got the hell away from there and notified other scout patrols to be watchful. It was strange shit.

      @@randomlyentertaining8287 A wolf doesn't need to know exactly what a gun is - pretty much all animals don't know what guns are, but many know what they do.
      What they'll have very quickly realised is that the humans have very noisy objects in their possession, which cause their family members to drop dead when they make that noise.
      They'll also have had generations of experience of hunters with similar objects, so while they couldn't tell you what a gun is, they know that they're bad news.

    Interesting, thoroughly researched, no speculation,sensationalism or extreme gore. Survival is gory enough as it is. And stories are always better when the author actually puts in the effort to be factual. Wolves are one of the more majestic species and can be as sly and cunning as man. They are extremely intelligent and actually think thru problem solving. Altho they can be extremely dangerous, you can't blame them. We would fight just as hard for our existence. They are also very social animals and are very protective of their "family" pack.

      Weird coincidence, Daniel Boone is part of my next episode, but not in the way most folks would think.
      Thanks Mark, would greatly appreciate that. The stories of Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone are on my list-my own childhood hero’s.
      I had not expected it but I am amazed at the folks I’ve met through this channel. Thanks for sharing your family legacy. Feel free to email me or submit an episode suggestion (email and suggestion link in the description of this episode) so I know how to follow up with you.

      @@CaptainFrost_ have you ever bought screen print shirts, and if so what drop-shipper would you recommend?
      I’m not sure if maybe my own standards for screen printing are just too lofty. But I want to offer merchandise that is reasonable on price but not low quality.
      I’ve had multiple test prints from different companies, and with many of them the screen printing has arrived crooked/misplaced or otherwise the printed material peels off like cheap thin latex.
      I’m not sure if you would know the manufacturer of the shirts you’ve purchased (like Printful, Monster Digital, etc)?
      Or maybe just the influencer/channel that you have gotten merch from, that I could use as a starting point? I can certainly find out which manufacturer they use.
      Many thanks in advance if you can point me in a good direction.

    This was another great episode, and an excellent conclusion to Part 1. I know you haven't touched on espionage yet, but would you be willing to do an episode on WWII British spy Dusko Popov, also known as Agent Tricycle, and believed to be the basis for James Bond? I don't know how accurate it is, but he apparently received evidence that pointed toward Japan planning to attack Pearl Harbor months before the actual raid.

    I'm afraid this just paints a very narrow view of not only Stolarze's paper, but wolves in general. "The practicality of the anti-wolf policies was based on political and economic considerations where wolves were either used as pawns to win one social group against another or the destruction of wolves was ordered to prevent economic losses. Surveying the anti-wolf policies developed by the two different political regimes over the span of half a century offers a starting point to study the relationship between humans and wild animals in Poland."-The same paper.
    Stolarze himself also fails to understand that civilization itself, came directly from humans learning to breed and train wolves and eventually dogs, which enabled farmers to protect enough croplands to feed large cities. Civilization didnt DULL the humans ability to survive, it gave us education, learning, math, science and everything we know today. Because of wolves.

    • @WartimeStories
      @WartimeStories  2 роки тому +2

      A thoughtful response, thanks for taking the time to write it, Mike.
      The obvious response is that this video was primarily focused on the incidents of wolves attacking humans, more specifically soldiers. It was not my intent to make a political documentary focused on wolf policies.
      The research may be narrow, and it certainly it is regarding Stolarze since I quoted only a single idea from the entirety of his work. The narrow amount information was simply provided to lend credibility to stories with minimal documentation to reference. If I had found a firsthand account from a Russian or German soldier who was there, the credibility of the story would then rely on their written account. As it was, there was no such information I could find.
      I didn’t use the word “dull” but otherwise my point about our ability to survive was not directed at the collective survival of humanity-I was speaking about our individual ability to survive in the wild.
      Many of us living in developed regions would likely not adapt well to being suddenly thrust into the wild expanses of nature without preparation. Building a shelter, starting a fire, finding food, avoiding poisonous plants, avoiding predators, predicting weather patterns, finding clean water... all things we likely take for granted with modern living.
      The many stories recounted by Bedtime Stories about people being lost in the wilderness and dying (among many others) serve as a great reference to that fact.

      @@WartimeStories Sir, I thank you for your intelligent and prompt responses to posts. I think the sad truth is that the entirety of human and wolf relations is actually rather mundane and dull, when viewed over its entire length. The juicy tidbits like the (questionable?) existence of a Russian superpack and the Beast of Gevaudan are much more entertaining and suitable for UA-cam.

    • @WartimeStories
      @WartimeStories  2 роки тому +3

      @@mikeborsum8881 you are most welcome, I certainly appreciate folks who have a wealth of knowledge beyond my own. I’m just a guy making UA-cam videos. In retrospect, maybe I should have stuck with ghosts-far less controversial!
      I was fairly blindsided by the wolf controversy, specifically the unsavory notion that wolves have and may attack humans.
      I started out just thinking the story was rather bizarre and I wanted to find out more. As you can imagine, most of these stories are my own curiosities on display-those stories that intrigue me enough to spend a few dozen hours researching and making into a video. This one certainly caught my attention, but admittedly I was disappointed to find out how little material I had to work with. I was otherwise further intrigued by the various stories, like the Beast of Gevaudan, and how they were all inter-related, especially with the history of wolf attacks in France. Not something I probably would have ever studied otherwise.
      This is just a speculation, but as for man’s history with wolves, I’d imagine it would be largely mundane, but in terms of competition for limited resources, I’d have to wonder if the decimation of wolves up until the 20th century didn’t stem from a long standing animosity, thousands of years in the making. Two territorial species living in the same space, hunting the same prey. Just seems likely to result in bloodshed-a very longstanding “war” if you will. And certainly more so when we advanced into a agrarian society raising essential livestock.

    • @mikeborsum8881
      @mikeborsum8881 2 роки тому +2

      @@WartimeStories I wish I could remember who's paper I was reading about monitoring brain waves in humans when listening to various animal sounds. The result was that there seems to be something like a primal instinctual emotional fear response when humans hear wolf howls. Our reptillian sub-brain seems to say "SHIT! WOLF! RUN!" even if the rest of our brains argue logic. "Nah, relax bro, it isnt going to hurt you."
      Even in in places like the US, where we have had three wolf-related fatalities in 100 years, nevertheless, our instincts still say "AVOID THE WOLF!" A bit like how a cat who has never seen a snake, will jump three feet in the air if they suddenly see a cucumber behind them.

    Also, this isn't to be an ass about pronouncing, but to make a light hearted comment. As a Finn myself, I love how Turku came out as Tur-Coup.
    Added side note:
    Finnish names and practically all words have all emphasis in the first syllable. So, in case Finnish places or people (Simo Häyhä or Lauri "Larry Thorne" Törni, perhaps?) get mentioned in future stories, that might be a convenient reference.
