Rex Ryan is absolutely right. The players will always do what’s best for the players and not the Billionaire owners. The NFL and NBA need to follow suit.

It wasn't for only $5m more. First there's an opt out and escalators that could make the deal worth $800m. Second, Cohen wasn't going to be outbid, he would've offered $1b if that's what it took.
Yea that's not the case though. The 75 mil is part of the 765. The only way he gets anymore is if he opts out of 460 mil over 10 years at 31 years old (some of the contract is front loaded) He's probably not opting out of that. If he does the mets might just walk and use that money elsewhere. If the mets get the best 5 years of sotos career for 305 million and he then opts out It's basically a win. The extra season is nothing, he might not even play that season. He certainly wasn't getting a significant payday at 41 years old. This was about the location not the money
Honestly the majority of Yankee fans are not so mad as people believe. That's way more money than anyone expected. That's a shame to play a beautiful game and being lifted. I hope he takes care of those in need especially in DR. Good luck and congratulations to him and the New York Mets. Yankees 4 Life
Burning jerseys, going to Citi Field to make videos cursing Soto says otherwise. Any Yankees fan pretending like they aren’t mad is putting on a front 😂
It is clear Hal is worried about taxes and hiss bottom line, Cohen could care less!! The man paid millions and millions of dollars for a few prospects when he bought Sherzer and verlander out
You could see that Juan Soto was very different than Aaron Judge. With Judge, he was a homegrown Yankee. Yankee tradition and being Yankee captain meant a lot to him. Soto is much more of a mercenary. He went from the Nationals to the Padres and then to the Yankees before settling on the Mets. He was going get the most money he could.
First off, he was traded to San Diego and then traded to the Yankees. This is the first time he has signed a deal as a free agent. So the mercenary comparison is just words. He may have wanted to go to the Mets all along ... who knows. But this is the first time he has had the chance to go where he decided he wanted to go.

Thats about the stupidest deal ever. He’s 26 now. A 15 year deal means he will be 41 when he completes it. He will be way out of his prime years well before the contract is finished. I would say 34-35 he will be an average player. Maybe 36, so you got a third of the contract paying top dollar for average work. Just a dumb deal. He ain’t worth $765 million anyways
He will bring more fans views and possible chance of a championship. He is definitely worth it or else they would’ve never spent it to get him. If he wins the Mets 1 championship that’s merchandise to sell for at least 10years.

Which means that for the same 15 years the Yankees were offering $712.5M That's a difference of $52.5M and that's not taking into account the escalators that make the deal worth $805M Mets offered ZERO deferrals. $75M signing bonus. Come on now.
Apparently as of 3 pm yesterday Soto was gonna sign that deal but it was the crazy 75 mil signing bonus that put the Mets over. Soto is essentially getting 120 million his first season
You think soto would get another year as a free agent aged 41? To earn more than 47.5 million? what he’d have gotten from the Yankees for year 16? I doubt it. 😂 You’re right about the real reason. The opt out and signing on bonus.
I would say intelligence. He doesn't want to be mistreated like Judge was at the beginning of the season for a small slump. Nor does he want to be trampled on like Gleyvet Torres, Verdugo, Claro Holmes who has already left. Soto wants to play calmly, produce calmly, earn his money calmly.
@@davidthorp6728 Nah... Being on the Mets is definitely less stress than Yankees.. Any team is for that matter. Mets are best of both worlds. World Famous City, but less pressure than being a Yankee and dealing with us brutal fans..
Boras used Toronto, Boston and the Yankees to get the most for Soto. Let’s be honest today’s players only care about the Benjamin’s and not legacy and tradition.
Lol none of these guys have a clue what they're talking about. He doesn't care about the pageantry of the Yankees. I know it's hard for Yankee fans to believe, but not every player sees the Yankees as the pinnacle of baseball. He believes in the direction of the Mets more than the Yankees and wanted to be a Met, that's it.
If the Yankees signed Soto, that would have been their only move this offseason along with other final pieces to build out the roster. The Mets are no where near finish this offseason...Soto sees this and picks the owner who not only gives him the most money but also won't use it as an excuse to stop spending and going after other free agents this year and in the future.
Look, we all knew he was going to go to the highest bidder most likely, but I did feel like being a Yankee even if it was for a year, that it meant something to him, and the Yankees would have an edge. The fact the he left us for a 5 million difference clearly shows he didn’t want to be a Yankee at and it just about greed. I’m kind of happy this entire thing is done and we can spend money on player(s) instead of one guy who isn’t on Ohtani’s level.
@@leonmoore9427 Their stats are similar. All are average per season. Ohtani: .282/.945 OPS, 32HR, 81RBI, 21SB, 24 2B, 4.78 WAR..................Soto: .285/.953 OPS, 25 HR, 74 RBI, 7 SB, 22 2B, 4.48 WAR
😂 now we acting like The Mets wasn’t a more complete team then the Yankees last year? The playoffs showed alot. Yankees benefit from a very well matched up American league route to World series, Mets are changing their culture
2 reasons why Soto signed with the Mets. Firstly, Soto is not known as the player with the highest IQ. He is greedy and does not have the intelligence to realize that the extra few $million makes no difference. As a matter of fact, he may have made more $$ off the field if he remained a Yankee. Second, he would not have been the best player o the Yankees and wants all of the attention directed at him. Regardless, it's a good thing that the Yankees did not get him. This contract will go down as one of the worst in baseball history.
Not the best player on the Yankees? I assume you mean Arron Judge. Well, I'm sorry, but I will take the guy that gets more hits than strikeouts and DOESN'T completely disappear in the playoffs.
Stop bringing up history it’s a new era the Mets have a richer owner better farm and better future that what Soto saw a vision he made the right choice these aren’t the same big bad Yankees and Mets aren’t little brother anymore
Can anyone explain why this guy is getting a bigger onctract than Ohtani? I looked at both their 2024 stats, and ohtani blows him away. Ohtani is also a good pitcher, on top of his offensive stats. What the hell does this juan soto have anyways? His stsats look mediocre to me at best.
A big issue, also, comparing Pujols' deal with Soto's deal is that Pujols was in his thirties when he signed with the Angels. Soto is 26 years old. The Mets are getting him in what should be his prime career years. I don't understand the talking heads who are downing on this signing, other than they just wanted him to return to the Yanks. Soto is amazing. As long as he's healthy, there is no reason to believe he'll be anything other than amazing with the Mets.
Let’s be real at what year will Soto be a permanent DH? His defense is bad and it’ll only get worse. He’ll be a DH by age 30 and it’ll be 51 million a year for a DH. 15 years is crazy.
Mad dog needs to tone down the Yankee rhetoric. He needs to stop crying😮. Here’s something these ‘genius’s’ didn’t take into consideration. In Yankees history it was all about Babe Ruth. The great Gehrig played second fiddle. Mantle was the guy, not Maris, DiMaggio was the guy, not Yogi. Mattingly was the guy, not Winfield, Jeter was the guy, not ANYBODY ELSE Today Judge is the guy. Maybe the deciding difference is with the Mets SOTO is gonna be the guy. He can create his own legacy and not be in the shadow of Aaron Judge Let’s Go METS!!!
How did Boras fool baseball into believing Soto is worth more than a player who hits as well as him, brings an ENORMOUS amount of money from his country, oh and btw HE PITCHES too😂

@randygervaciorosado7290 You have no idea what you are talking. He was atrocious defensively in right field this season. I am a Yankee fan, watched tons of games and I was shocked how poor defensively he was. So slow and not good tracking balls especially over his head. This is a short right field too which should be easier. Ask any Yankee fan about Soto's defense and we all say the same. He has a good arm. Poor defender though. Facts!
@StrongholdLament He has a great patient eye but that has nothing to do with him being a .285 career hitter and being a poor defensive outfielder and slow base runner. He has obvious cons.
I’m upset we weren’t able to get him in Boston as a Red Sox player, but I’m equally as pleased to see little brother get one over on the big brother Yankees.
Shannon stop get your numbers right it's closer to $800 Million when it's said and done and Shannon your wrong again about the union pressure of a player taking more because Aaron Judge took less to stay with the Yankees $340 million to Padres or Giants over $400 million, bottom line it was more he always liked and wanted to be a Met and he see's the team that has the fire and desire with wanting it more great chemistry and better lineup from 1 to 9 so his future is better with the Mets
MLB needs to cut down the length these guys can sign to 6 year contracts, 15 years is ridiculous and they need to ban deferring contracts to be paid after contract years.
Don't be fooled by the numbers he put up this season. He will never have another player behind him like Judge again. He played his hand and played it well.
Simple fact is Lindor shows up in the postseason and judge does not. Mets have a brighter future, better farm system and the richest owner willing to spend money.
As someone who lived in NY but wasn't a Yankee or Mets fan, I think there is 2 things besides money that he likes going into his prime. He will likely own EVERY statistically relevant record in Mets history. He is also going to be the face of this team, with all the perks of being in NY without being a victim of the teams expectations.
@PAP_Highlands999 yes and no. He is the star of the Mets now, he still has the out of "we have to get thru Philly and Atlanta in our division and the dodgers in the league before the WS". With the Yankees, he may have made more money than judge, but it's his team. And the only real competition in the AL is Houston.
Soto has an opt-out clause in 2030 so there's no guarantee he will fulfill the entire contract but hey if he does the Mets will be paying him $51M when he's 41yo, good luck with that.
"Don’t talk to me about competing for a ring. On the entire Yankees roster this year, the only player with World Series experience was Juan Soto, and the only one with a championship ring. Soto gave this Yankees team the chance to see what it was like to be in the World Series again."
"Juan Soto didn’t leave for the Mets just to avoid the pressure the Yankees put on their players, and it wasn’t just for an extra $5 million. The Mets also offered him a $75 million signing bonus, which is significant. On top of that, we need to consider how the Yankees have historically treated Dominican players. A clear example is what happened with Soto: during the playoffs, he was the team’s best hitter, while Aaron Judge didn’t contribute much in the postseason. Yet, in the ceremony, they didn’t even mention him or invite him to the front. I’m sure that treatment had an impact and might have been part of the reason he didn’t stay with the Yankees."
Blame the Dodgers for the Mets spending spree this off-season. Owners last year begged Cohen not to go crazy spending big $$ on free agents, saying it's bad for baseball. But then the Dodgers do it, creates a mini all-star team, and nobody says anything... that's good for baseball. As someone who lived in NY but wasn't a Yankee or Mets fan, I think there is 2 things besides money that he likes going into his prime. He is also going to be the face of this team, with all the perks of being in NY without being a victim of the teams expectations.
Based on the size of the contract the expectations will be huge.
@PAP_Highlands999 yes and no. He is the star of the Mets now, he still has the out of "we have to get thru Philly and Atlanta in our division and the dodgers in the league before the WS". It’s all about the money. 🤑

Fantastic explanation, thank you!
"Don’t talk to me about competing for a ring. On the entire Yankees roster this year, the only player with World Series experience was Juan Soto, and the only one with a championship ring. Soto gave this Yankees team the chance to see what it was like to be in the World Series again."
A 15 year contract? Who plays as well when they’re 40 as they do when they’re 25?
You leave because you become a hero for a franchise and remembered forever as a great for the New York Mets. In no one’s shadow it’s common sense
NY Mets were the only team that could have beat the Dodgers
Blame the Dodgers for the Mets spending spree this off-season. Owners last year begged Cohen not to go crazy spending big $$ on free agents, saying it's bad for baseball. But then the Dodgers do it, creates a mini all-star team, and nobody says anything... that's good for baseball. Cohen let those ppl into his head last off-season, wasn't going to make that mistake again.
