    I find that mulch is one of the best ways to not only manage soil moisture but also a good way to add organic matter which also helps conserve moisture.
    Hugelkultur is also a good way to maintain moisture and add organic material to your soil.

    • @VeronicaFlores
      @VeronicaFlores  2 роки тому +2

      Absolutely! And that's a key part of my process as well.
      I have found that hugelkultur doesn't work as well in arid climates unless the beds are dug down. Even then, they may still require irrigation in order to function properly. But they're great in places that get consistent rain!

    • @neverlookback3382
      @neverlookback3382 2 роки тому

      @@VeronicaFlores I agree, mine are dug down but still require some irrigation but not nearly as much as my other regular beds do.

    Do you have any tips for really rocky soil? I live on an old glacial lake bed, so our "soil" is 50% to 70% rock/gravel, about pea sized up to bowling ball. Of course, most people just buy bags of the garden bed stuff from the box stores, but I'm wondering if you have any tips for building from scratch that will be healthier with more microorganisms than the bagged stuff.

    • @VeronicaFlores
      @VeronicaFlores  2 роки тому +2

      What John suggested is a great tip! If your rock ratio is really that high, it may be helpful to go with raised beds and layer in organic matter. If you have areas that are less than 50% (like a lot less lol) I often pick out the really big stuff but leave the smaller gravel and add organic matter and well aged wood chips. It probably won't be great for very straight root veg though unless you're able to remove a lot of rocks or just build it up. (I would probably still sift some native soil free of larger rocks and mix that into my beds, like 10-20% or so, just to get more microbes working through my growing spaces.) Compost is going to be your best friend here if you're set on working in ground.

    • @VeronicaFlores

      Get your watering schedule in order - most BER is due to irregular watering patterns. And yeah I have an entire fall garden, just dealing with tech issues

    How has the drought effected your watering?

    • @VeronicaFlores
      @VeronicaFlores  2 роки тому

      I definitely underwatered this winter because I wasn't prepared to water as much as I needed to in some areas. It effects the intentionality of my planting more than my watering though - I'm currently not doing large wild fields or strips of cover, as they would need more irrigation than the landscape can support. I'm still watering established gardens the same, and making good use of both drip irrigation and mulch.

    Wouldn't it be better to avoid this dry soil to being with by having a drought resistant cover crop?
    Here in Texas, it's amazing how well grass can get by on virtually no rain from April till late September, providing it doesn't have to be cut too short.

    I don't know why you're not chopping and dropping that tall grass around you and watering with JMS. That soil needs organic matter and microorganisms.

    • @VeronicaFlores
      @VeronicaFlores  2 роки тому +1

      Not into the beds because it's foxtail grass - and not on the hill slopes because leaving it upright helps to protect the soil from wind erosion and slow monsoon rains that we get here in the high desert. It can be helpful to think of solutions holistically in terms of the overall ecosystem, rather than be tunnel vision results driven for a singular focus. As for microbes, many actually exist in this space already thanks to the OM and gut diversity that comes from composted manure - getting it back up to speed with bokashi and compost as well, but water is the most critical first step.
