Nice post. I spent some time with Wabu Young, a student of Wu's. Wabu passed in 2006 I think at the age of 106. Wabu was remarkable, still able to take me down at 93 years of age.

In case anybody is interested... This is the form I (try) to practise. It is preserved in the Shanghai lineage. This form is called the square form and was conceived by Wu Chien Chuan to teach beginners the basics- connection to the centre, angles of neutralization etc.. Several forms later the Fast Form of Chuan Yu is taught, when the student is ready. The fast form is round and more martial, with speed changes, fajing etc...

the long form seems to me to be a training form for the fast form, really, although of course it has much value in itself - i just started learning wu fast form last year - my sifu david barrow studied with ma yueliang & ma jiangbao - i think this may be the same lineage as you :-)

Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. Son have formally established the style Wu with the help of influential friends :). Father (may be) would not have to move away from the old Yang style.

after the death of founder Wu Quanyou, his son headed south. Thus creating 2 lines of wu family. His senior kung fu brothers, most notably the great Wang Maozhai, who had also taught Wú Jiànquán, stayed in Beijing. Wang was teachign much earlier and stayed closer to Wu seniors teachings. Wu Jianquan diverged lightly, added. Thus who si the founder? Can onyl really say father sew the seeds, maybe not formally of new family line... but his disciples did.

Nan Wu Bei Wang (南吴北王) - South Wu and North Wang:
Quan You was the Manchu name, Wu was added later to Quan You. It is -obviously- the family right to decide how to call who and when, but calling Quan you "Wu Quan You" it muddies the waters. Wang Mao Zhai was 10 years senior to Ai Shen, which was the original Manchurian name of Wu jianquan. Making it appear like Wu style originated with "Wu" Quan you and from him to Wu Jian quan, makes the whole Beijing Branch of Wang Maozhai disappeared like if it never existed. (Difficult to negate the level of skill of Wang Peisheng though, and thanks to him some become aware of Wang Maozhai, Yang Yuting, etc and the whole "North Wu Taijiquan"...."When Quan You passed away, Wu Jianquan and his older gongfu brother Wang Maozhai, unsatisfied with their current level of skill, rededicated themselves to the practice of the art. For the next ten years, they led other brothers in an intense effort in research and practice. It is said they practiced behind closed doors at Wang Maozhai’s home every day during that period. Besides Quan You’s teaching, their training was also influenced by that of enigmatic Taiji master Song Shuming (宋书铭). Finally they succeeded; arriving at their unique style of practice, that of medium-frame form, with very soft and refined techniques in push hands, and very detailed internal practice.
In 1928, Wu Jianquan moved to Shanghai in southern China. He was the first person to teach Taijiquan in the south. It is said when Wu first arrived Shanghai, he took many challenges and won his great reputation first in this most developed modern city of China, and then in most southern provinces. In 1933, Wu established Jianquan Taijiquan Association (鉴泉太极拳社). He had many students, including some famous high ranking government officials and generals. Some of his students, such as Xu Zhiyi (徐致一) and Ma Yueliang (马岳梁) etc., published Taijiquan books that had a huge influence on the teaching of Taijiquan.
Wu taught Taijiquan in southern China while Wang Maozhai remained in Beijing. These two great Taiji Quan masters came to be known respectively as Nan Wu Bei Wang (南吴北王) - South Wu and North Wang. This Wu style was differentiated into two main groups, one in Beijing and one in Shanghai. Later Wu Jianquan’s son, Wu Gongyi (吴公仪), organized a third group in Hong Kong. Today therefore, there are three distinct groups of Wu style practitioners. ycgf.org/Masters_in_YCGF/TJ_QuanYun.html
