Suggestions for a stricter list: - clear separation between subjective and objective assessment. For example, I dislike Catelyn Stark as a person, but I thought she was an excellent character and caused a lot of the conflict in S1-2. - decide whether or not you go just by book or by show as reaction to show taints assessment. - assign points for particulars, 1 point for major plot contributions, 1 point for strong characterisation/personality, etc. Question: Based on your exchange with Wolf, do you think all characters should have contributions because there are hundreds of good side characters? They don't move the plot along in large ways, but they have other roles. It's possible I misunderstood.
I feel like people forget about some of the characters that didn't live that long. Oberyn was awesome. Robb Stark was awesome. Jeor Mormont was awesome. Ned and Robert were both really great. Barristan's "retirement" scene is one of my favorites in the entire show. Mance Rayder was really great. Khal Drogo. Jaime was the best until he got butchered post-season 4. Also, RIP GOT.
Disagree with how you rank them based on significance and not quality at times. Edit: I'd suggest judging smaller characters based on how well they fulfil the role of that character and add arcs to more major ones.
Too true! A bit too much weight on "how much they did" versus how well they were executed. Really shitty characters could always be instrumental to the plot.
Next time you do one of these you should use categories: interest, consistency, influence, potential (included for those that are killed early) & acting. It would give the conversation more structure & create a balanced rating sysyem. Would also cut out the "should be". Each score is out of 10. S - 45+ (9+ for each) A - 40-44 B - 35-39 C - 30-34 D - 25-29 E - 20-24 F - 15-19 Jared: 0-14 An example, Renly Baratheon Interest: 6 Consistancy: 9 Influence: 3 Potential: 7 Acting: 7 Could have a final subjective addition. Say from -5 to +5 for well reasoned arguments. With our previous example we could go -3 for having been infected by, and unable to cure, "the gay".
😂 I love Joffrey & it's funny to watch the actor in interviews because he's the nicest bloke. I didn't think they could create a better antagonist until Ramsay rocked up.
49:00 honestly Tyrion should be in the "ruined" C category. He is not unused, they destroyed his character in the later seasons, same as Arya and Stannis.
How come you didn't just do 2 lists: for potential and execution? So much "amount of screen-time and action participation"-based issues can be avoided to arrive to a lot more objective result. For example: Hodor is a walking plot device to deliver poor cripple to his destiny - E/F tier character potential, but the brilliance of building up emotional connection with his struggles puts him to S/A tier in execution. On the other hand Tirion is Tywin tier in potential, but is actively being retarded from Season 3 onwards, so ends up being E tier in execution.
@@SETHthegodofchaos That's kinda how it should be for major characters in an epic though. And some minor ones like Hodor or Bronn can actually be low in potential but high in execution. It would have definitely been super entertaining to see them discussing the reasons all surviving up to Season 8 characters end up in the F tier.
@@cyberdystopia6029 Yep, most of the time the reason why people are alive is because they are good at something, but that trait usually is also their downfall. So I wonder how the ranking would look like from that standpoint. (Littlefinger F probably xd)

Hey, Wolf, who does anything, mate? Does Yoda do anything in the OT? Or Palpatine, for that matter? Are they bad because they're basically useless by your standard?
@@ginge641 Sure. His argument for criticizing a lot of characters - like Catelyn, for example, is saying that they don't exactly do anything. First and foremost, that is extremely vague - do only physical actions count, and if so, isn't Daenerys the best character ever by that standard? A lot of characters don't perform incredible physical feats but perform other actions that further the plot - they plot, they advise, betray, et cetera. The examples I bring are of characters that weren't hopping about and genociding millions of minions - at least in the OT, they were quite subdued in their presence and yet were instrumental to the plot. I'm not sure if my initial statement is that vague, to be honest. I'd say Wolf was much more vague in his "they don't do anything" approach. I'm not a fan of Game of Thrones, and certainly not a defender of any of the characters in that fucking series. What concerns me is that Wolf is a media critic, and as such, should have more to say when it comes to critiquing media. Let me know if this was too vague as well, mate.
@@doubt_ No vagueness here. Wolf's judgements in this stream are off the cuff and heavily subjective. I would hope that, if he were to make a video on this, that he'd be far more specific and objective when operating with a script and time to find examples. I would guess that he means these characters don't do much independently. Catlyn is vital to the plot, but every action she takes is in the service of Ned, Rob or her family in general. But that's what happens when you write a supporting character, they have relatively less agency than the main characters.

Rickon doesn't necessarily need to be saved in the books, he's just thought by most to be dead and wyman manderly wants to fetch him from where he is so he can be declared king or warden of the North for the North to rally behind him. The plan is that stannis brings a stark back to rule the North so that they would declare for him. See Rickon could be quite essential... If the book ever releases. Edit: I guess spoilers, but if you didn't read the books already, you have boring taste and I don't want to be friends with you.
1:52:50 also Night King, the King's Guard traitor jon executes at the wall and the one who kills Arya's sword fighting master, the one she kills in Braavos. If you are gonna include the theater people, you should at least include that one main Dothraki guy. Lots of the Northmen are missing as well; Karstark, Big Jon Umber, even little Lyanna Mormont. That's all I can think of as of right now. Actually, I think Walder Frey himself is missing, unless I am just not seeing him. Other than that, as chat mentioned, the Mountain is missing, too. How about Ilyn Payne, possibly the direwolves, the Three-Eyed Raven. Ah, the Iron Bank people who were cut out of the show for some reason, also the Golden Company that was totally wasted. I think now I'm actually at my limit for now. edit: Daenerys also had that one slave advisor that showed her how to make love, and who later betrayed her with that black rich guy, I don't remember the city's name or his. He should be included as a character as well, by the way. That reminds me of that warlock person who can clone himself, maybe some other characters of that arc, too. eeedit: Oh that guy we see at the very start of the show, who gives Daenerys the dragon eggs, I believe he is playing a bigger role in the books. I think doing a list like this you can also "hold the show accountable" for how much they changed from the books, and how it affected the rest of the characters. After the show is done, I think it would be really constructive/productive to really point all of that out.
Mauler & Wolf: Let's make a tier video for GoT Characters! *Starts streaming* Mauler & Wolf: Okay chat, how do we make a tier video for GoT Characters!?
I really liked the character of tommen in the show. Sure he was a marionette and a minor character, but he was an interesting contrast to joffrey - since his story showed what would have happened if joffrey wasnt insane. I liked the he wanted to be righteous and kind, but didnt know how - and that he was so sad that he failed that he ended up killing himself. And I totally bought it. Also he enabled the fun interactions between margerey and cercei. Loved their subtones in their conversations.
Do I watch GOT? Nope. Do I love watching Mauler and Wolf discuss and argue about things? Yep. So am I gonna watch this entire stream about a show I've never seen? You bet!
Honestly I think Bronn should of been in A- tier, he used to be a really key character, and then they sort of just forgot what to do with him. He saved Tyrion's life multiple times fought for him in trial by combat, was a key component at the battle of the blackwater, became commander of the city watch and a knight, trained Jamie after he lost his hand, convinced Jamie to visit Tyrion in prison. Went on the mission to Dawn and Riverrun, shot a dragon. And now he is the wealthiest man in Westeros XD
Now that the show is done and most of the characters in season 8 were either killed, butchered, or both I would say the best characters are ones that died before they could be ruined: Robert Baratheon, Ned Stark, Robb Stark, Catelyn Stark, Oberyn Martell, Ygritte, Tywin Lannister, Margaery Tyrell, Olenna Tyrell, and Ramsay Bolton and Joffrey (they were interesting to watch even though they were horrible people). I guess the hound and theon also has decent endings but that's it
Catelyn Stark was very well acted. The actress was great and she brought so much to that role. I'm very glad she was in the story and I was very sorry when she died. That's why everyone raters her so highly. But as a character, in that world, she was terrible. She blundered the whole Seven Kingdoms into massive wars that basically got everyone killed. The one bit of good advice she gave to Robb, Robb ignored, so she was also ineffectual. And I don't really blame him since everything else she was advising would've been disastrous for the war effort and every decision she made on her own was just a nightmare.
Best acted and best written should be how they're ranked. You're ranking them on 'impact' but have Daenerys near the bottom... also whatever your metric is Stannis and Catelyn should be higher.
Charlie Burns shows how subpar your knowledge of acting is. Emilia Clarke does a really good job with her character and what she has to work with based on the script. I have no idea how you can say she is a bad actress.
@@InfiniteBeak she filmed with green screen, tasked with playing an emotional yet emotionless leader, best actress in show by end, the list is clearly jokes, in terms of iconic standing she may be the greatest character, in fact not may be, definitively is.

But since you brought it up, you're only as good as your last game....Tywin humiliated Robb when his entire army was wiped out at a wedding. That being said, i highly doubt Daddy Lanninster would have advocated for deploying infantry behind artillery....outside the fucking walls.
Loras does A LOT more in the books; after Renly dies, Stannis only gains a fraction of the Stormlands forces he could have because Loras and Randyll Tarly lead the forces of the Reach at Bitterbridge, to prevent the Stormlands' infantry from defecting to Stannis' army. He joins the Kings' Guard and serves under Joffrey and Tommen; he actually becomes kind of a big brother/mentor to Tommen by helping him train in AFFC. Cersei sends him to end the Siege of Dragonstone, and he's reported to have been badly burned by boiling oil while leading the final assault over the battlements. But in the show he's The Big Gay, and the only real badass moment he gets is taken from his brother Garlan in ACOK, namely donning the armour of Renly Baratheon and lifting the Siege of King's Landing as 'Renly's Ghost.'
They wasted so much potential in so many characters is almost a crime. What a shame. It's almost like the writers hated GoT, it's the very same feeling I had about Rian Johnson and TLJ.
I think they simply aren't that good at writing. David Benioff wrote X-Men Origins Wolverine ffs. Given how complex this story can get, D&D seem to really not be capable of writing in things they would like (just look how things turned out after they couldn't work with the books anymore).
As useless as rickon was, couldn’t we Atleast have bran mourn him? I know his the three eyed emotionless zombie now but he was the one who was caring for rickon before he sent of with Osha, also we couldn’t get a scene of him learning about osha’s death? Wasn’t she an important character and friend to him earlier in his arc?
Must be tricky to rate characters based on the show, considering what a disservice the show did to the best characters. There's a big difference between the complexity and potential of various characters vs. how they were wasted in the show.
I did Strong (S), Good, Medium, Small and Nothing Roles, and between Small and Medium I made a "Ruined" tier, for characters from the books and the first 4 seasons that are ruined by the show, containing characters like Stannis, Tyrion, Varys, LittleFinger, Jaime, Jon Snow, Cercei, Euron, Deanerys, Doran Martell and Ellaria Sand. Nomatter how good the characters was before they got ruined, after that they are nothing !!
I am still waiting for all episodes to air. Still, it was impossible to escape the most egregious spoilers. I am now looking forward to the trainwreck ahead.
Elaria should be Rickon--------- tier, she is the whole entire reason for the Dorne plot, just because D&D liked her actress. They created that storyline just to see her.
2:15:00 LOL! But in all seriousness, I don’t really want to sound aggressive, I was just curious if and how wolf will respond. I admit my argument was poor and probably should get better at it.
Enjoying the tier list, if i was watching it live i will suggest the tier list have a x-y axis tier, more left equals to character integrity like in B- Mel is more consistent than like tyrion got F up.
I wonder what was the point of Ros’s character? Wouldn’t it make more sense if she was like a Jayne pool type of character? Think about it, she’s from winter fell she’s a ginger, they could’ve used her as a replacement Sansa to marry her to Ramsey Bolton, this would also have her tie back into theons arc. Just a thought. That scene with her and little finger is creepy though. I wish the show could’ve added in more of Roberts bastards. Like that vale horse girl, and that young boy who lived with stannis at storms end.
Ros was an important character. She was the whore point of view of the show. She represented the little people and how they are screwed by this drive for power

Also, RIP GOT.
agreeeeeed!
Yep. And they're not even consistent with it, for example if this were the metric Arya, Daenerys and Euron should all be MUCH higher.
@@TomCFC8 Democracy is why Daenerys is in rickon tier; the mob voted, thus, the mob has spoken.

I can’t believe this list didn’t include the FOOCKIN LEGEND OF GIN ALLEY.
I'm so glad yall put Olena in Tywin tier, I was yelling at my screen PUT HER IN FOOKIN TYWIN TIER, SHE'S NOT S TIER!! loool well done lads!
Next time you do one of these you should use categories: interest, consistency, influence, potential (included for those that are killed early) & acting. It would give the conversation more structure & create a balanced rating sysyem. Would also cut out the "should be". Each score is out of 10.
S - 45+ (9+ for each)
A - 40-44
B - 35-39
C - 30-34
D - 25-29
E - 20-24
F - 15-19
Jared: 0-14
An example,
Renly Baratheon
Interest: 6
Consistancy: 9
Influence: 3
Potential: 7
Acting: 7
Could have a final subjective addition. Say from -5 to +5 for well reasoned arguments. With our previous example we could go -3 for having been infected by, and unable to cure, "the gay".
😂
I love Joffrey & it's funny to watch the actor in interviews because he's the nicest bloke. I didn't think they could create a better antagonist until Ramsay rocked up.
This comment should be at the top.

@@godemperorofmankind3.091 Most characters are manipulated by Baelish.
Exactly! They should evaluate what the idea being the characters are.
edit: But then most ideas will be always S and A and only execution will vary :D
Tywin, Best written Character.
Worst written character(S), Sand snakes.
My most hated and evil character: The high sparrow.
The Sand Snakes were awful but Dany has to be the worst simply for ruining every character that ends up in her story. Barristan, Tyrion, Jon, Varys, hell even Theon gets worse when they pledge to Dany

I assume the high sparrow because of the anti-gay? 'cause other than that, he's incredibly morally on the right. Which is why his character is way better in the book

To be honest, I didn't like the show and didn't start watching it til season 6 come out then I got hooked. It's worth a watch if you haven't since you commented haha
Hey, Wolf, who does anything, mate? Does Yoda do anything in the OT? Or Palpatine, for that matter? Are they bad because they're basically useless by your standard?
Don't you know you're not allowed to criticize someone's opinion unless they make a video about it?
Care to actually refute what he said instead of being ridiculously vague?
Now do the same thing with Star Wars characters 👀

Rickon doesn't necessarily need to be saved in the books, he's just thought by most to be dead and wyman manderly wants to fetch him from where he is so he can be declared king or warden of the North for the North to rally behind him. The plan is that stannis brings a stark back to rule the North so that they would declare for him. See Rickon could be quite essential...

I love how they have to discuss whether a character was damaged after D&D took over the plot
The mountain is not on the list but the random guy from the play is😂😂😂

Mauler & Wolf: Let's make a tier video for GoT Characters!
*Starts streaming*
Mauler & Wolf: Okay chat, how do we make a tier video for GoT Characters!?
Saying Tyrion wasnt great in s3-4 is the stupidest most petty take ever💀
I really liked the character of tommen in the show. Sure he was a marionette and a minor character, but he was an interesting contrast to joffrey - since his story showed what would have happened if joffrey wasnt insane. I liked the he wanted to be righteous and kind, but didnt know how - and that he was so sad that he failed that he ended up killing himself. And I totally bought it. Also he enabled the fun interactions between margerey and cercei. Loved their subtones in their conversations.
Yeeees. Tywin has his own tier :D
Best character.
As Tywin would say...
"Thats not an opinion, its a fact!"
Do I watch GOT? Nope.
Do I love watching Mauler and Wolf discuss and argue about things? Yep.
So am I gonna watch this entire stream about a show I've never seen? You bet!
Theon is the only character with a complete, satisfying arch (you could argue Jorah and the Hound too but I feel theon is most complete).
Ros is based off a book character called Alayaya, she essentially serves the same purpose, just goes by a different name.
A prime example of how wolf doesn't really form his own opinions and just guesses at what mauler is going to say....
That’s a take, I suppose
"I'm gonna leave [Tyrion] in B. I feel like-... who knows. He might recover by the end of this season to at least do SOMEthing."
*Heavy sigh*
2:26:18 I will never get over the fact that in Silent Hill, he plays the character that dies in the game. Yet he actually survives this.
She deserves to be in Rickon Tier after the latest episode.
I guess the hound and theon also has decent endings but that's it
Mauler: "Let's put a tier between D and F, I'll call it D-".
Letter E: :(
Catelyn Stark was very well acted.
You're ranking them on 'impact' but have Daenerys near the bottom... also whatever your metric is Stannis and Catelyn should be higher.
well, Stannis started out great and than got ruined by the start of season... 4 I think it was
Best acted and best written, Dany would still be at the bottom, Emilia Clarke has the range of a spoon

Tywin at the top. You win the game. Night King was to afraid to come south while that man was alive.

@@godemperorofmankind3.091 It was a joke. I made a joke. Jokes are things people do for lols. But since you brought it up, you're only as good as your last game....Tywin humiliated Robb when his entire army was wiped out at a wedding. That being said, i highly doubt Daddy Lanninster would have advocated for deploying infantry behind artillery....outside the fucking walls.
@@tired8788 Yeah, but he couldn't outsmart a boy on the battlefield. Kinda lame.

I think Rian Johnson genuinely just wanted to fuck Star Wars, but I think D&D are just lazy and incompetent.

Must be tricky to rate characters based on the show, considering what a disservice the show did to the best characters. There's a big difference between the complexity and potential of various characters vs. how they were wasted in the show.

I feel like if a character’s still alive in Season 8 it drops them down a tier in their character and how much I like them
I did Strong (S), Good, Medium, Small and Nothing Roles, and between Small and Medium I made a "Ruined" tier, for characters from the books and the first 4 seasons that are ruined by the show, containing characters like Stannis, Tyrion, Varys, LittleFinger, Jaime, Jon Snow, Cercei, Euron, Deanerys, Doran Martell and Ellaria Sand.
