Thanks so much, Caroline. I do like The Ordinary products but wanted to say there is nothing ordinary about Caroline Hirons - you and your channel are extraordinary! Thanks much for the straightforward, detailed, honest and candid product reviews 👍😘
I just had to break off at 3:11 to check what I'd bought! I've had the 2% retinoid sitting on the shelf since March and now you've given me the confidence to use it. thank you. X
I have highly sensitive skin and I can use the 2% Granactive on my neck and even around my eyes and mouth with absolutely no irritation. I was so happy to see that!
As a 29 year old who has suffered with hormonal acne for half my life, I wish I had used a retinol sooner. I’ve used the Granactive 5% for the last 4 months and the texture of my skin is much improved, acne is less angry and goes away quicker, I also feel my scars have improved. The only sensitivity I’ve had is when I accidentally I go to close to my eye area, which I avoid now.
I have went on to Granactive 5% and my skin just freaks out and went back to 2% Granactive. Too much peeling, and acne just popping up unstop. 2% Granactive will be the maximum strength that I will get. I love videos that educate us on how to pick out skincare.

But you do. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world appreciate you and are so grateful for you. And you're cool- although Journey is a way better band than Duran Duran.....
I just want to thank you for reviewing products from The Ordinary. As I have had to retire early due to health problems, their products make it possible for me to purchase skincare products. Would I love to buy from Drunk Elephant or other wonderfu companies? Yes! But I am here to say that my skin is just beautiful from using The Ordinary products for the last 2 years. (I own 10 of their products and alternate three skincare routines). P.S. Due to genetics, I inherited great skin. I have never had acne and don't struggle with skin issues. One of the other reasons is that I stopped exposing my face to the sun 30 years ago and use SPF every day! (I am 57)
This series of videos is so impressive! What a comprehensive look and explanation of virtually every type and brand or retinol under the sun. Thank you.
Wonderful, Caroline. Thank you so much for doing this. I haven't been able to get a clear review of these products from any source until now. I use the Ordinary products because I have become allergic to so many add on products in other products. For example I can no longer use basic Nivea or even Simple moisturisers. So I clean with coconut oil, moisturise with almond oil and use a factor 50 suncream. I knew if I was to use Retinol it would have to be in a very simple formula. So I chose The Ordinary which keeps formulas to the minimum. I began with Retinol 0.2% in Squalane, slowly moved to the 0.5% and finally now can use the Retinol 1% in Squalane even on my skin. But I never understood it's effectiveness or the difference between it and the the Granactive Retinoids, until now. Thank you!
Thanks for this! I've been using a 0.1% prescribed by my Dr, but then a friend gave me the 0.2% granactive from TO. Now I feel more confident moving on to that once my current prescription runs out!
Thank you, as always, for just being straight forward but so detailed in your explanations🙌 no faffing just useful information, you're a skincare hero!
Yay, Caroline for speaking about the Ordinary again. I have to say I have been a bit dissapointed in the top UK beauty influencers (you know who you are) in what seemed to be a complete disregard for this important brand since Brandon's passing. Thankyou. Also, thankyou for the breakdown of their 6 retinoids. The Ordinary really wasn't the greatest when it began in terms of use and recommendations. Indeed, much more clear now. This is a long post for me, puff, puff. Just one more thing please. Ladies and gents may I recommend a video by dermatologist David LIM titled Best Skin Care/science & not marketing. I understand the hesitancy. Unless you’re on this side of the situation it’s impossible to comment. A lot of us, especially me, were directly impacted by Brandon’s destructive behaviour. I’m only talking about these now because of the demand for info on them. I don’t see myself suddenly endorsing them wholeheartedly again. Sorry, just being honest.
I couldn't agree more, after a big wow there's been a complete silence about this brand since Brandon's actions... not fair in my opinion concidering what this brand achieved not only in terms of providing effective, affordable products but also exposing big cosmetics giants in a way (production costs vs market prices etc.) By the way I am a beginer when it comes to retinols, right now I am using granactive 2perc in squalane, so far no irritation at all, so I'am going to try stronger stuff soon :)

Hi Caroline. I use the 1% retinol 2-3 times a week and I love it. I worked my way up from the 0.2 and I just bought some for my friend to get her used to it.
Hi Caroline, Thanks so much for this. I'm fairly late to the party on good skincare and retinols. I bought The Ordinary's 3 retinols in squalane (not the granactive ones). The plan was to work up from the 0.2% to the 1% because of the advice to start gently. TBH I wasn't sure if I'd chosen the right 3 as a newbie. It seems I made a schoolgirl error and skipped the mildest 3, but that's ignorance for you. - I bought them before I found you and your valuable advice :) The good news is that I've had no adverse reaction to the 0.2% in squalane and I've been using it for 3 months. I started slowly with once a week and I've built it up to every other day in that time. As a background I'm 46 and my skin is fair & dry. I've never had acne or any significant sensitivity. I've got fine lines in all the usual places for my age and I have pigmentation / age spots even though I don't feel like I've "abused" my skin with sun exposure so if I could talk to my 20 year old self I'd be be doing the SPF chant regardless of Retinol. In terms of results, I'm using the Retinol as part of a skincare routine including moisturiser, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic acid, Glycolic acid, oils, salicilic for the "hormonal beard", and, of course, I'm double cleansing. This little lot I've introduced to replace a routine consisting of Olay cleansing milk and E45 moisturiser. So, it's hard for me to pinpoint what exactly the Retinol is doing for me, but my skin is as soft as the proverbial babys' bum and, touch wood, the hormonal breakouts have lessened since I've been doing this routine. AND I've had quite a lot of compliments that I'm looking very healthy. I can't really ask for more than that, really, all things considered (high stress, bad diet, former smoker yada, yada, yada). :) I hope this helps anyone that's considering The Ordinary's Retinol range, and thanks again, Caroline, for all your hard work in bringing this information to us xx
Do you find your skin is better now? I also had a very basic skincare before and now I use all the products you listed but I feel my skin looked better with my old basic routine (cleanser and E45)
You still did better than me...I just ordered two bottles of the 1% LOL!!! I’m only going to use a tiny amount and use other soothing oils with it (vitamin b probably) to dilute it AND only plan on using it once a week and maybe gradually moving up to twice a week. Ugh, hope all this works. If it’s too much I’ll obviously just have to order some different ones but on a bright note they were CRAZY inexpensive so no biggie! :)
I too have started with 0.2 retinol in squalane but from the get go have done every other day. Was considering increasing it to every day as I haven't had any irritation. And this is coming from someone who's never used retinol, and have typically slightly sensitive skin.
I even took caution and in my opinion every other day for a 0.2 was a safe starting point. Wonder who amongst us is doing it wrong. Any feedback from anyone?
Thank you!! This is exactly what i was looking for on TO retinol. Have worked my way up to the high 1% over the last year and have had no reaction and my skin is fairly sensitive . Grest video as usual! X
Thank you Caroline, as always clear and to the point, I am one of those with very sensitive skin and scared to start the retinol thing...may just give these a try. take care!
Blue Jay I totally recommend going with the lowest granactive retinol if you’re worried! It’s great and easy to increase how often you use it without irritation! I got mild dryness when I started using it every day so I just started using a bit heavier moisturizer and it was fine
Great advice, thank you! I bought the 2% granactive in emulsion and the 1% retinol in squalane after finishing a bottle of the 5%. I wasn't sure which one would be stronger of the two I recently purchased, so I've been going back and forth. I will definitely start using the granactive as a little break. ☺️
Great video, thanks Caroline. I use The Ordinary because of it's affordable price point. But, I've been confused on the retinols. Your video explained how to use them so well. Love watching your channel.
Thank you for that very good explanation of retinoids. I used the granactive 2% in emulsion but I think it may have oxidized and my skin was tanning. I'm now using 1% retinol in squalane and I find it a bit irritating. Now I understand why.
Love that you explained this a bit. I use ordinary retinols and one by una brennan which is absolutely stronger. Love them. I'm staying at 2% in squaline for now (I'm 32). It helps balance my skin and people say i look 22! Haha
fantastic video. never had a beauty expert express this in a way that was so easy to understand and answered all my questions. i feel like i was nodding and saying 'ahhhhh' the entire time. thank you. new subscriber and fan here!
I really enjoyed your video it was down to earth plain talk the first one i have understood and it was great for me i dont work over back op now i know what i want thankyou very much x
Hey, Caroline. Are you gonna make a video about tretinoin itself? I would love to see a skincare routine using different product you would recommend to use before and after and maybe hear about the long term results you can expect while using it. I've been using tretinoin for a while now, with great results and not so much irritation, but with all this retinol talk I was wondering if there's something I'm missing, you know FOMO, haha. XO.
That's easy. Bland is the word . Absolutely nothing but a bland cleanser and moisturizer at least untill your skin gets used to it. Some people never get used to it.
I had never used a retinol before but ended up going straight to the Ordinary 1% retinol so the strongest one. I use it about 3 times a week at the moment and started once a week and haven’t really experienced any irritation! My skin is a touch drier then next morning but still way smoother! Love it! My skin isn’t super sensitive though
I did exactly the same (not on purpose, I was a bit clueless about retinol when I started...) started out with the strongest and haven't experienced a single bit of irritation with it!
You may want to look into Tretinoin eventually, if you can get a prescription. Also make sure to keep on top of keeping skin hydrated and moisturised. Hyaluronic Acid, hydrating serums and face oils.
I started using Paula's Choice 1% Retinol Clinical treatment a few weeks ago (my first-ever Retinol product, so not a very wise decision) and it has produced no irritation, no redness, and no peeling whatsoever. I think I must be one of the people Caroline referred to in a previous video who have no reaction to Retinol.
Thank you for doing this video about TO Retinol line. I started quite a few years ago with the mildest one, and am now on the 1% and for days in between when my skin feels tight the 0.2% retinol. I really like the products. I like that they are sort of basic products and I love the price! :) I much rather buy these from TO and invest in a really, for me stellar eyecreme. Thank you again!
@@user-jk4jj4nm1q I use the Ferulic + Retinol serum and cream from Dr Dennis Gross. I have tried, and liked the Triple Action Advanced Eye Cream from Zelens. Both brands work really well for my eyes. It does seem the darkness under the eyes gets lighter and the skin must be nicely moisturised as there are less dry wrinkles when the foundation and setting powder is on. I use the creams as recommended by the brands, though I can get really dry mobile lids, and then I use a very small amount on the lid. I'm out of all products right now, trying to use up other eye creams before they turn bad, so I can't check, but I think one of them is also for use on the lid.
What luck! Just got in bed with my iPad and this pops up! I wasn’t tired yet anyway! Lol. Much 💗 and appreciation, as always (and I haven’t even watched the whole video yet...lol). 🤙🏼💕🤙🏼💕 xo Aloha!
using and loving granactive 5% in Squaline, working for me and no issues at all. Everyone comments on my skin looking good at 54 with no fillers botox use etc so skincare over invasive shit for me everytime and also a nurse so no bloody money to waste!
Thank you Caroline, you are brilliant! I've been trying to explain this to my friends who have never used retinol (or any skincare even) but now I can forward this video to them
Thank you so much ma’am 🙏🏻 for explaining it so lucidly ... I was comprehending on buying granactive retionol in squalene and was apprehensive whether I should buy it 🙂...
Hey Caroline! Can you PLEASE give us a step by step PM routine in order of steps , as I’m not sure where my retinal products should be used in the routine
Thanks for info. I’ve just bought the 0.2% in squalene and have psoriasis so treading carefully. I only apply every other day currently. I think I got confused about the emulsions otherwise I’d have started on them first. Got a bit of peeling and redness after 3 applications but playing the long game as slow and steady will pay off hopefully!
Anything higher than 1% isn’t sold here. So that’s the max and oddly most brands just put that on the label to show it’s the strongest before prescription. So hard to know where to start under the 1% to build up to it. I may try and get the 0.2 or 0.5% versions to start.
Wow, thank you, I value your beauty guru insight and even more your sensitivity to budget constraints! It seems quite rare to have someone be kind to those of us who struggle.... Thank you

Great Guide. Tks
Your skin is Amazing 👌
Thank you! I use hydrating serums and oils daily :)@@dalmatinka9084
I started using Paula's Choice 1% Retinol Clinical treatment a few weeks ago (my first-ever Retinol product, so not a very wise decision) and it has produced no irritation, no redness, and no peeling whatsoever. I think I must be one of the people Caroline referred to in a previous video who have no reaction to Retinol.
ach nix what skin type do you have? I have combination skin and want to use retinol as an anti-ageing product
What eye cream do you use and for what, if you don't mind me asking?
What improvements did you see?
Great video thanks Caroline 😘
@carolinehirons thank you so much. Is there nothing you don’t know!? This is very clear and so helpful. As ever love the nails too 😊✨💫💖💅🏻

using and loving granactive 5% in Squaline, working for me and no issues at all. Everyone comments on my skin looking good at 54 with no fillers botox use etc so skincare over invasive shit for me everytime and also a nurse so no bloody money to waste!
Thanks so much Caroline💟💟💟
Thank you for another great video. Are you going to address retinol products for the under eye area? Please.😊
Debra Buckley she did in one of the first videos. in short: not around any area with thin skin or creases eg. around eyes, nose, neck
thanks caroline
Thank you you helped lots xx
Thank you Caroline, you are brilliant! I've been trying to explain this to my friends who have never used retinol (or any skincare even) but now I can forward this video to them
Happy to help!
Thank you so much ma’am 🙏🏻 for explaining it so lucidly ... I was comprehending on buying granactive retionol in squalene and was apprehensive whether I should buy it 🙂...
GREAT explanation-thank you!
My son irritates me too ;) LOVE you Caroline. Thank you for this.
Hey Caroline!
Can you PLEASE give us a step by step PM routine in order of steps , as I’m not sure where my retinal products should be used in the routine
Sam Sam - so glad you asked that question! Hope CH answers :)
Hi, thanks for watching, check out the retinol Q&A vid from this retinol series x
@@CarolineHironsThanks - will watch :)
Love your makeup in this video!! What lip products are you wearing? They look amazing! 🥰
i've been waitng agesssssssss for the ordinary video i do get it now :-)
Very informative.
I started on the granactive emulsion and graduated to the 1% in squalane, I get no irritation now.
Thanks , helpful and funny.
Thank you Caroline! I wish I had seen this video earlier 😂
Anything higher than 1% isn’t sold here. So that’s the max and oddly most brands just put that on the label to show it’s the strongest before prescription. So hard to know where to start under the 1% to build up to it. I may try and get the 0.2 or 0.5% versions to start.
Wow thanks for this video I don’t understand it all so this will help x
I am using the Granactive 5% in Squalene and so far loving the results!! ☺️ LOVE your videos!!
Thank you so much x
