Mr. Johnson is the reason why I build Gen 3 Hemi's today. The work he did on the ProStock circuit is second to none. Thank you guys for providing this interview. He is one of my all time favorite Engine Builders and Crew Chiefs.
I know the emotions Roy is feeling since I had a heart attack 2-1/2 years ago. We are both still here thanks to modern medicine and the man upstairs. The Johnsons were and are good people and it's to bad they are not still out there racing.....
Roy and Alan are great people They tested are Chill Factor Hood & intake Cooling Blanket back in 97 & 98 for them to put Evert and take the time to test are products at that level of competition and then use them I can never thank them enough.
I first went to a dragstrip in 1965 with my sister and her drag racing husband. So, I saw Pro Stock from the beginning. It was so nice having all four manufactures in the class. Now it is all Camaros and not nearly as fun to watch. Even the Mustangs run by the Quadra brothers not sure of the spelling, but their Mustangs are Camaro's under the skin. I was so disappointed when I found that out. I always pulled for Allen Johnson when he was running. Many say NHRA legislated those Hemi's out of the sport.
Well Scrambler, NASCAR regulated the HEMI engines out of the sport in the name of " equity " instead of making the other manufacturers " build a better mousetrap ". It wouldn't be a surprise if NHRA did the same thing.
Agreed, They cater to GM as usual when they allowed GM to develop an engine that was too far removed from the original design. FYI RM cheated to steal the PS championships from BG with illegal solid cylinder heads.
And WJ and KJ were ready! But, drag racing is a sport, and dominant teams eventually cause fans to lose interest, bcuz they know what to expect. I disliked the DSR years for that very reason. For me, I loved when Grumpy beat Sox & Martin, then Lee Shepherd of RMS, then WJ. Guess I'm a bowtie guy. It was/is a very popular powerplant. To allow hemis to dominate, the fan base would likely dwindle....IMHO
Watch the crowd get up and head for the shade and concessions when the Pro Camaros fire up, boring. When Ford, GM and Chrysler were competing equally Pro Stock was never more exciting. The Coyote Mustangs dominate Factory Stock to NHRA's dismay so they come up with Factory X for GM to dominate, shame.
@@hiddenhorsepowerpodcast when the 10,500 rev limiters came out in 2016, it became obvious who had been spinning their engines to the moon. The top teams took a few races to acclimate. Exciting innovation anyway!
I love Roy Johnson. I liked his son. But my dad and I mopar die hard people my father was called hemi Gus and Roy talked to my father we always looked up to them and we wanted to be like them and watched them together every weekend. Screaming at the screen. When they won or lost. We watched them in the pits in Indy change their valve springs and we walked in over the barriers acted like we were w the team(sorry) and dad looked at me and said they going to pick up 4 hundredths and damn it they did R.I.P hemi Gus.
The "mistake" was not having the gears on hand for Denver that everyone else had. Turned out the "wrong" gears they were forced to make do with were actually better. Discoveries are made that way more often than many might realize.
Blowing up my ass. Probably watched racer x and assumed they all have the same problem. High 8 sec is not an easy task from a factory 4000 it car . But i guess you already know that right?
What killed Pro Stock is an all GM Camaro show . Sorry not everyone whats to watch that and another sad deal is look at the success of their team success of their team, Bob and Warren team all that work and no one retires rich .
Allen and Roy are down to earth guys, not uppity and arrogant like some are. They really gave the Mopar guys something to be proud of.

I know the emotions Roy is feeling since I had a heart attack 2-1/2 years ago. We are both still here thanks to modern medicine and the man upstairs. The Johnsons were and are good people and it's to bad they are not still out there racing.....

NHRA did the same thing back then and today they put weight on the Dodges.....

Yes, Vernon,
It reminds me of school sports participation trophies. Teaching young people that its okay to not try harder.
Bob's Boss 429s forced GM to develop the DRCE and THAT changed pro stock forever. The end of actual pro STOCK.
Agreed, They cater to GM as usual when they allowed GM to develop an engine that was too far removed from the original design. FYI RM cheated to steal the PS championships from BG with illegal solid cylinder heads.
bobs working 24 7 made gm did that!

@@dsgp7835 not me i paid 75 dollars to get in im watching!
When Roy was racing AHRA at Kingsport he probably raced against Shirl Greer some. Shirl was from Kingsport and won the first race there.
I probably about Roy’s age and I also stopped drag racing because of the mid ‘70s gas crush … took off for 7 years.
Oh my Penske Shocks
Love Roy and Allan. Great interview
Thanks. We love them too!
Great interview. Learned while being entertaining.
Thanks!
You Gotta get Roy Hill on the show next
This guy has a NDE and builds class winning motors after. Crazy!
Right?
I always remember they turned more RPM than any other team. I've heard they were in the 11,500-12,000 range.
11,500 was real

Mopar Family No Doubt about that
Back then the Mopars were absolutely dominant!

R.I.P hemi Gus.
I also met lake speed wearing someone else’s creds at pri he looked at me and like you are not him. I was like yep I know
Roy is awesome
When we lost Mopar and Alan Johnson😂 I haven't cared about pro stock anymore since they're gone pro stock hasn't been fun anymore
100%
Fully agreed
I wonder if he knew my grandpa who was a master mechanic for Chrysler for like 50 years. Last name was Bowdoin bowden. He did it all
that's another good one
so somebody please tell me,,,what was the MISTAKE ???

@@G53X0Y0Z0 thank you
I think Mr. Johnson has had it with nhra
Allen and Roy need to consult with Demon 170 engine guys to figure out why they are blowing up !

That generation of Americans are the greatest. They followed their passion today generation don’t know what their passion is 🙈🙈🙈
Absolutely!
Wrong, Boomers sold this country out.
Before I was born 😂❤👌🇺🇸💪🏼
Long as it doesnt spin past 10k
What?!?! You can run any engine in any car in Pro Stock now? Good grief, how bastardized is this class now?
Sad, but true
