@@chuckfield8210 Bah. But its just not the same. I feel like a grandpa at age 40 where they don't make things like they use too... Now you can turn on a book instead of opening one.
I had my first View Master in 1972, at 10. I saw one a year before at a friends house and I started saving for my own. A year after that I got a View Master Projector from my mother and I started to show pictures at my friends parties. The View Masters at that time, came in 3 models; the "regular" one, the one with backlighting and the Talking View Master.
I’ve got a model D and I love it, I have thousands of reels and I love them. I continue to collect them and just about every word that you said in this video I can identify with. It’s a wonderful hobby, nice to share it with Rebecca!
I'm the weirdest collector ever. I'm so choosy. I was going through my reels last night and discovered that I have the Sawyers Peter Pan set from 1957 AND the 1966 GAF set completely intact. In case you're wondering, yes, both sets are exactly the same dioramas inside. But it's SO COOL to have the branding of both versions side by side!
My mom gave me my first View Master when I finish 1st grade, back in the early 1970s. It was a present since I passed with good grades. I remember the first reel I ever watched in my View Master was a biblical story, Noah's Ark. Seeing all this reels and VMs takes me back to my simple, happy childhood.
Sadly, I totally get this lady. I also have my childhood View Master reels (uh... and those of my older brother) & 1 viewer. I can't bring myself to either ditch them or give them away. What I admire is how clean and mint condition her reels are in. My stuff was played with by me, so it's all rather tatty. I get the nerd vibes she gives off. You GO girl!
the problem i found is that either the reels are the same ones you find over and over, or if they are unusual the seller wants to sell for big bucks. For me finding stuff for a collection for pennies on the dollar is part of the fun.
My husband tells me a story every few months about the viewfinder. When he was a kid he saw a slide of a green tree they made him so happy and content. A peaceful picture he says he will never forget. I have been trying to find the picture. He’s 51, thinking of a particular time frame. I will keep searching. If you have any ideas , please let me know. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
try a series called mystery trees, because i had a similar desire of an image of a car driving through a hollowed trunk of a giant redwood, it was on that series
Many reels have trees. It could be nearly impossible to find the one he liked. But you could certainly pick up a viewer and some nature related reels. I'm 61 and have been collecting 3D images since the 1980s, but it's never too late to start.
Probably the only place you'll see a Dolphin jumping through a hoop of fire, awesome... Fantastic collection. Viewmaster was the virtual reality of the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, before the term virtual reality existed ... Where are the best places to pick up "lots" of reels, any suggestions anyone?, cheers,
Ebay can be good, but beware price-gougers and condition-exaggerators. Wait and watch then swoop in when there's a great deal. Other auctions can have great deals too.
Got this for my almost 3 year old for Christmas. It has animal reels with it. We have this space "planetarium" thing and he loves looking at the planets on the ceiling so I think he'll enjoy this. Plus no batteries.
I have about 25,000 reels, and other Sawyers collectibles but I never cataloged them on computer like you. There are so many variants that are not noted in books that I have, that all those findings will one day be lost. I just don't have the time to go back and note every variance that I found, from alternate camera angles to booklet differences, to font differences on the packets, to font differences on the reels....and also, some hybrid sets such as set number stamped on packets that included single reels, and many other such variants. It's endless. and fun.
Thank you so much for your video. I was trying to look up viewmasters for my nephew's son who's 13 and it never heard of them and as it was playing and I was listening I was like oh my God this is so cool. Appreciate you.☺🙋🏽💯
View-Master was invented in my hometown, so my dad caught the bug and bought a VM stereo camera and equip. I still have the camera and the many reels of our family vacations and events he made.
You can search “stereo camera” online. It’s a camera with 2 parallel lenses. It takes 2 pictures in the same exact angle of separation of your two eyes. After you develop the negative… you can create your reels by glueing them by hand. It’s not so easy to do. But at the time they have instructions on how to do it. And they used to sell “blank” viewmaster reels holders ready to receive the negatives… it must be a lot of fun!!
I had my first Viewmaster in the mid-1950’s, later supplemented with a projector. It fueled my 3D obsession. While I ultimately did not become a Viewmaster collector, I do film in 3D and have a collection of well over 100 3D Blu-Ray films.
As a Gen Xer growing up in the 70s, it was my favorite toy because it allowed me to use my imagination. I would watch a Flintstone reel, and imagine I was inside a tiny movie theatre watching the Flintstones
Great. What would be nice is a web page listing what she has. That way if someone has something she doesn't have, they could send it. Not to point fingers, but i might have something...
I'm connected with Rebecca through View Master collector Facebook groups. We do communicate with each other and sometimes help each other locate interesting finds.
Hello, we saw your video, liked it and subscribed to your channel. We are also fascinated by the 3D-VIEW-MASTER and Stereography and we read the View-Master Booklets on our channel to the reels.
Amazing, a View Master collector! I think the family had a View Master B, since it was a distinctive round shape, compared to the later square ones.;) Speaking photographically, these were Real 3D, not the "I see layers" effect seen in Hollyweird movies. Even in an IMAX film, I see layers, instead of "looking into the scene" via View Master.
When the plastic push-button broke on my Viewmaster D, the slider was quite sharp, so I would just go and get a bandaid and wrap it around my index finger. I had the "Cadillac" one that Rebecca mentioned. Correct me if I'm wrong but those were made of Bakelite I think. I had tons of tourist-y slides, but the ones that made me the happiest were 'The Flintstones', 'Deputy Dawg' and one of Daffy Duck which, if I remember correctly was titled 'Daffy flies South' or something like that. He had a hard time accepting that normal ducks weren't like him. It was a great time to be alive!
What a wonderful story! Thanks for shooting and sharing. I could easily be wrong but weren't these done by the 90's as hand held games became all the rage?
Wow. When I was going to garage sales in the 90s looking for Ataris and 60s and 70s toys and stuff from my childhood....it wasn't unusual to see a box with a Viewmaster and 30 to 100 reels for 3 to 5 bucks. I didn't buy any then. These things are crazy expensive now. I only have about 200 reels. I would love to have all The World's Fair ones...cannot afford. Maybe if I buy just one a month...lol. I like the old scenic ones but especially like the ones with people in them to see their clothes and hairstyles and so many of the men smoking pipes. I would LOVE a huge box full of personal reels. I would just love a huge box full of reels. Lol.
This is amazing! I just saw one of these for sale in my country (Bulgaria) and I immediately bought it since stuff like that are really rare here. I’m just sad I don’t have any of the pictures 😢. But I’m looking!
I had a viewmaster in the 70s. Hey what with the Brokendown crackle in voice at the end of a sentence. Is it a Hollywood trendy thing like up speak. 😁😆😆😆😆
I had that red one as a kid. But I have a question for anyone who sees this: Which is the best model view-master to get? Are there major differences/improvements/compatibility issues? Isn't there one later model that had something wrong with it? Toxic plastic or something?
The best version of it is the newest plastic ones that have an oval like shape. In her collection , there is a blue one in the middle of the bottom of the screen, when she show them all at a table. It has better lenses and the pictures are much larger and better focused. i have 2 of these, to see the reels with my kids. But sure, they are plastic and fragile, not as the traditional black ones.
i used to have one in the early 90's that looked more like a camera with one eye piece that you looked through i've never seen the same one ince i would love to see one again it had pictures of africa inside, and my friend used to have a really cool one it had a winding handle on the side it was a star wars one
The only toys kids have these days is iPhone and different versions of iPhones. All my friends kids do is play Games on tablets and watch UA-cam. Do I ever miss growing up in the 90s era
I had plans to create a View Master porn empire. But by the time I had grown up enough, VHS came and went, DVDs were huge and online had just started (and almost all of them required a hefty subscription). I really thought I had my life on the path to creating generational wealth combining two of the best things on earth - toys and naked ladies.
Would you like to make some home-made reels? I want to sell my Viewmaster Personal camera, cutter, instruction books, and a few blank Viewmaster Personal reels?
De niño, tenia un View Master. Voy a buscarlo en el mercado de cosas usadas de los domingos que se pone en mi colonia. Últimamente he pensado en este juguete.
been collecting sceneic ones from St. Louis my hometown. Years ago I tore open my childhoood viewers when they broke. I have a number of viewers now. My childhood one was a model f red.
This was not just a toy. It was an experience. This should had never went away.
I fear that much of “wonder” went along with it.
@@MultiProudMother It it was still in existence, I wonder what would a 2020 theme look like!😉
Many forms of 3D experience have come and gone but View-master stilll goes on. I like it better than my VR headset.
For us collectors, it's very sad that View Master is no more. But there are other companies who produce reels that work well in these viewers.
@@chuckfield8210 Bah. But its just not the same. I feel like a grandpa at age 40 where they don't make things like they use too... Now you can turn on a book instead of opening one.
I’ve just showed this to my parents to prove them that my View-Master "obsession" isn’t all that bad.
Innocent & healthy I would say
Lol
Hello,I started my, ViewMaster reel
Collection back, in 1971 in my Grandfather's camera, store and I still have ,them to this very day.

Try the Viewmaster wikis, forums and catalogs out there. Go from 1939 to whatever year it was when your husband was 5... Good luck!
