Not all "coloured" people have lineage from the Cape but this is such an important story to illustrate the multifaceted nature of "coloured" identity.

The contributions of certain groups to the development of South Africa is often trivialised. Coloured people and in this case more specifically Cape Malay people built Cape Town and so many other places, as well as developing arts, culture and science.
They were at the forefront of the anti apartheid fight, contrary to the belief that coloured people liked apartheid. This next point won't sit well with some but coloured people initiated the birth of what we now know aa the Afrikaans language. It was adopted among the youth of the Dutch speaking descendants of settlers after which the eventually made it their own.
