Monk encouraged Coltrane to prolong his improvised solos and explore advanced rhythmic and harmonic concepts. As a result, Coltrane developed even greater technical fluency, which gave rise to his “sheets of sound” improvisational style.

Sheets of sound was a term coined in 1958 by Down Beat magazine jazz critic Ira Gitler to describe the new, unique improvisational style of John Coltrane.

Coltrane influenced such rock mavericks as Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix. Miles Davis said having him in his band was like hiring three saxophone players in one. Dec 19, 2001

John Coltrane's music can be broken into roughly 3 periods: Vertical (Sheets of Sound) Horizontal (Modal Jazz) Experimental (Free Jazz)
