I remember getting ColecoVision for Christmas with Donkey Kong pack in and was like there’s no reason to goto the arcade to play Donkey Kong anymore, it looked, sounded and played that good, in my youth mind anyway. My understanding is that Coleco had the Donkey Kong rights for North America and deliberately downgraded the 2600 version to make the ColecoVision version that much better.
It was more than just having the rights to it. "Donkey Kong" was the pack-in game that came with the Colecovision when it first launched, so Coleco wanted *their* version to look as good as possible, and for the Atari port to be as lame as possible, specifically to drive sales of the Colecovision console.
Perfect strait-forward way to show the difference. Yes sir, the ColecoVision was the first time it felt like having arcade games in the home, not just an overly simplified port. The Atari version is a notoriously weak port due to time and memory constraints. Sure, the ColecoVision had its short comings, but still truly wonderful for the time.
My childhood started with Odyssey and ended with Nintendo in 1988. Til Nintendo Coleco Vision was my favorite console yet I loved gaming on Commodore 64
My neighbors had an odyssey 2 which I played very little of. They had some interesting ideas including a mix of a board/video game. There is a guy nearby with a big odyssey lot I need to go snag. C64 is my nostalgia go to for gaming.
My biggest problem with the old console ports wasn’t the graphics(they did what they could with what they had to work with), it was how watered down the difficulty was. You could play these for a long time while the arcade game would’ve smoked you in around 40 seconds unless you had some skill
Never played the 7800 back in the day, but recently picked one up and did a review. I was impressed with it and will look to build small library up. Any specific games you recommend?
@@Modellbaustammtisch not sure why there is a difference. In the coleco game, Kong moves starts on left for stage one, middle for 2, and left side for stage 3.
I love my Colecovision and still have it. I need to get it out of the closet and see if it still works as It did the last time I tried it but the Atari 2600 convertor did not unfortunately and I still have a bunch of those games as well.
The odd thing is that the Coleco version of Space Panic was actually better than the arcade! There were a few others too that came out better but don't remember them.

I read that as well and also read comments debunking it. Don't know the truth anymore. The 2600 game was the first game I ever bought. $19.99 in '83. I still loved the hell out of it even if its quality may have been nerfed.
Coleco was darn close to Arcade quality at that time.
Their port of Donkey Kong Jr. was incredibly fun to play
Great video
I love how the clock gave your thumb a fancy highlight in the thumbnail.
had the Colecovision back in the 80's good times.
My favorite retro system.

Jeez, no comparison at all, phenomenal job by the Colecovision devs.
My question is what's going on with all the clocks?
This is my grandfathers old place. He collected clocks, lots of them.

Best ports I have played. If it were not for the lack of true RPG’s for this, it would be the perfect system.

The colecovision is awesome, love it….👍👍👍

I wonder if that had to do with games in the arcade wanting more quarters? Just like the guy in Wayne’s world said.
eyes been play'n them the 7800 donkey kong on a 2600+ plus

Colecovision looks better still the Atari game seems ok. I would have been happy with either as a kid back in those days.
Indeed. Be happy with what you have.
Why is Donkey Kong standing on the right side of the screen in the Coleco Version?

They tend to be fairly reliable in my experience. Rarely run into any issue that a good cleaning does not fix

Never played that in the arcade. I will fire this up tonight and check it out.
The Coleco version was pretty awesome.
you missed covering the elevator level for colecovision
@@riversarcadereview385 I will show more levels in future game reviews. I just did the same thing in DK JR that has at least 3 levels
Atari 7800 version takes it home though.

@retrogaminghippie3720 I just received my 7800+ so I could play atari games with my 5 five year old son. Keep up the good work!
the 7800 came out too late!! The Nintendo locked the 7800 in the dungeon, and hid the key somewhere in Legend of Zelda
ColecoVision had better sound than 7800 version because the 7800 used same sound processor as the 2600 system, not good

I always thought there was a Pie level in DK.

Coleco owned the license and made both versions. They purposely made the Atari version suck to promote their system by comparison.
Atari 2600 was incapable of the music and sound effects, for one thing

Atari donkey Kong sucks……graphics are terrible………😂😂😂😂
Most Atari games were worse.

Yes, we knew this in 1982 😂

Donkey kong was by far the worst arcade port of all on 2600. It even made pac man look good.
I think DK JR takes the cake as of now.
@@retrogaminghippie3720 disagree. Original donkey kong is much, much worse.
