Myanmar rulers are facing the biggest challenge to their authority since the military junta seized power in a 2021 coup. Intense fighting between military forces and rebel groups in the country’s border regions with China, as well as mass desertions of Myanmar soldiers, have been reported since October 2023. After two and a half years of fighting insurgents and with the second anniversary of the coup approaching, some observers say the junta is looking relatively vulnerable.

As an indonesian i have to once again thank my former leader soeharto who instead of opting to do what the junta does. he stepped down knowing a messy power struggle that would have ensued if he chose to keep his grip on power. i am feeling sorry for myanmar, the junta could have simply just followed what soeharto did as they have always closely learnt from his successes. I visited the country in 08 and 18. the decade difference was enormous. there was no internet, only a few 4 star hotels and bogyoke market as the biggest shopping center in 08. fast forward 10 years and 4 star hotels are everywhere, about 5 modern shopping malls, and most importantly we got the internet and i was able to travel around the city easily using google maps on foot and by ride sharing. I feel sorry for the people of myanmar just when i thought they were in the right direction the junta drag them down again too soon. They have stolen myanmar's future right under their own people and the world does not have enough time or resources to care.

He simply did that becasue he no longer had the support from both the military and the parliament, even his closest allies in his government. I think Myanmar case is even worse, since it's the whole military junta having their grasp in every branch of the government, making it impossible to hold a democratic government since the military can just easily invalidate the result of a democratic election.
If any, you should be 'thanking' Gen. Wiranto of Indonesian Army instead for not taking over the government upon the power vacuum as the result of Soeharto's resignation, even if he had the chance and power to do so. @@theheavenlyoption Technically, they are insurgents, in the sense of its meaning (a rebel or revolutionary). What would be problematic is if they called them terrorists.
Through a realist international relations outlook, China's relationship with Myanmar's current government only hinges on the ability of whoever is in power to remain in power. They do not want the war to spill over onto their side (some of the groups involved are indigenous peoples whose ancestral lands also happen to partially lie on the Chinese side of the Sino-Myanmar border) since that would mean a national security threat. I am of the impression that given this, China would recognize the freedom fighters as the legitimate government if they actually took over and defeated the junta, because by then, dealing with the SAC in an official sense would be a bane rather than a boon to their continued business dealings with Myanmar as a whole.

Myanmar has been facing internal disputes for decades. One of the remaining, critical questions is that if the junta government for example hands over its power to the Myanmar people, will internal conflicts/disputes still exist? For decades, even during the elected democratic party was in power/administration, there were also many internal issues such as the problem of Rohingya, ethnic and other social groups trying to separate from the central government for their own independence, so on and so forth.
In short, Myanmar does not only have problems with the junta, but also internal political and territorial disputes that have lasted for years. The local people need to focus more on addressing their own problems, rather than blaming others and/or external parties. All people's unity is the basic need.

The military junta currently running the country out of Naypyidaw has no jurisdiction. The UN does not recognise this regime. The State Administration Council has no legitimacy, and it has no legal authority over the citizens of Myanmar. _Chairman_ Min Aung Hlaing is *NOT* the Prime Minister of Myanmar. That title belongs to Mr. Mahn Win Khaing Than, leader of the National Unity Government.
The NUG is the true, legitimate government of Myanmar, fighting against the SAC terrorist insurgents. The “Rebels” you are referring to are the “People’s Defence Force”, the legitimate military of the Myanmar State.

This is not the Myanmar government collapsing, it’s a well funded, PRC-backed militia re establishing an autonomous government in 1 corner of the country while the military is weak.

Our most recent assymetric example would be in Afghanistan, where a better equipped and trained Afghan army easily surrendered to the lightly equipped but highly motivated Taliban (not a comparison, just an example of asymmetry).

Military still never learnt any lessons. Just to used power and soldiers to crush the people with different ethnic background will not help at all. They should learn from their neighbours like Thailand which have multi ethnic societies and yet they can co-exist with each other. Modernized Thailand. But Myanmar is really backwards and that's the prob. Military might will not help in long term.

agree, military junta should seek peace with the different rebel groups or atleast with majority of them and provide support for elections to reinstate a public government. the longer they wait, more complex the problem becomes since rebels are getting armed and corruption is will become widespread during conflict

Vietnam also has 54 ethnic groups coexisting, and the government is making every effort to ensure social security and support for minority ethnic groups.
At the Vietnamese point of view, I see that the Myanmar military government enjoys many privileges and economic benefits. That is a reason why Aung San Suu Kyi cannot control the situation, unable to use the military force to maintain security, and difficult to unify Myanmar when there are too many regional warlords.

Correction, please. This is not an insurgency. It is a an armed revolution called by the people as Spring Revolution
The junta has been around since the 1960's. In recent years, the country enjoyed a brief semidemocracy due to political reforms. The military again grabbed power after losing to Aung San Suu Kyi's democratic party by a landslide. The junta wants dominance of the resource-rich country. The junta in fact controls much of the economy from beverage, real estate, transportation, communication, gems and minerals, banking, trade, and oil and gas.
The people and their duly elected officials have had enough of the greed and brutality of the junta. Thus, this revolution.

Kachins and Karens fought well under US Command (notably OSS Detachment 101) against the Japanese and Burmese forces during WW2. I'm surprised the US isn't trying harder to rekindle that relationship as a means to spread their influence, but I guess most people don't know that part of history.

So a Federal Government is the best answer to that

Not a bad analysis and presentation of the resistance and 11027 operation. Foreign media usually misinterpret and miscommunicate current Myanmar issues. Even on this one, Enze Han and South China seems to presume that the resistence forces will not likely march into Myanmar heartland. Under normal circumstances it's absolutely true. However, this time most of the PDF (people defence force and the army of NUG) is composed from Bamar people and they largely operate in Magway, Mandalay and Sagaing regions which are predominantly Bamar people. Being the rookie armed group in Myanmar, PDF struggles to take down cities from the Junta but slowly they are making progress since they have taken towns in Burma proper such Kawlin, Khampat, Shwe Pyi Aye and Amone.

Myanmar was forcefully "made "into a country by the British, however, with the nullification of the treaty that formed the Federation of Burma in the 1948 (by the Central Government themselves), the legitimacy of Myanmar no longer existed, and all provinces automatically revert back to their original state of self-government and sovereignty. Any military attack on these independent provinces therefore is an act of aggression.

I think you should be aware that, the military under the ASSK government was in itself a rogue entity, it doesn't answer to civilians, it also held control of crucial departments in the government even though they weren't voted on to those offices(immigration, defense, etc...). What's sad is that the Rohinja are not the only ones being discriminated against, but also numerous other ethnicities who also happen to be christian, of course it doesn't fit your agenda(of the western media's). You should also look up on the massacre of 99 Hindu women under the Rohinja militants and the Rohingya's kidnapping and beheadeding of Buddhist monks, which you could say these are some of the factors that sparked the genocide which unfortunately targeted people nothing to do with those attacks.
