Thank you so much. I just adopted my first cat, and he tested positive for FIV during his first vet appointment, and I was so scared. If anything, I’m more sad for him that he can’t go exploring (he LOVES staring out the window)
You can still train him with going outdoors. Many take their cats outside on leash in their backyards. My family has trained all our cats for the last 20 yrs to stay in the backyard and we watch them. But it's a slow training process of using leash first, then letting them drag a long lead, harness without lead, then no harness. You watch at every stage and teach them the fence is the furthest they can go and that the door to the house is safety if they get scared. I wouldn't recommend this method if you aren't used to it but you can still take your cat out on leash or build them a catio connection to the house where it's fenced in but they can enjoy the weather and the breeze.
the outside neighborhood stray cat moved into my yard 3 years ago. he tested positive and vet said put him down but pound said thats not common anymore. cat weighs 14# and is a very sweet cat, great mouser too. he is free to roam, but shows up here for meals! i get him shots when my cat goes in. this summer i let him come inside from the heat but mostly stays outside. he has several boxes covered in plastic to sleep in around the yard, plus i built him a house using a cooler with 2 cat flap doors and a critter heater for winter. he is probably 10 years old. i don't want him living inside because he claws furniture, but am concerned that his breathing is sometimes audible when he sleeps and he coughs now and then. other than that he is quite the chub and in good health.
My beautiful gentleman has just been tested positive for FIV, the bizarre thing is that he has always lived indoors , he barely ever had contact with other cats other than his mother and siblings and that for very few months before we took him in our home. It hurts me seeing him in his crises but at least I'm glad they can live normal lives... Thank you for your video :)
Hi I'm also from the UK! How has your cat adapted to becoming an indoor only cat? I have recently adopted a cat with fiv and he clearly is longing to go back outside ,I only have had him a few weeks but tried him on a harness the other day and it didn't work out. I am so stressed for him that he can't go out I hate ignoring his meows . He has lots of toys and will play along with me and as much as he loves cuddles and the warm bed! He wants to explore outdoors. Do you have any advice?
Found a kitty outside of my garage meowing, and is a she🥰 . Took it to the vet this morning and she was diagnosed, she is a really hyper and playful kitty. I really love her, glad we found her and have this opportunity to take care of her. She did so good at the vet, also got a video from the clinic, they are such a nice people with my dog and now with kitty. By the way we name her Luna(moon)🥰🥰 Thank you for the info in this video👍🏼💯
I appreciate the encouragement from you as I had recently discovered my cat is FIV positive. I cried so hard when it was announced to me and I could not go into work that day. It is still difficult to accept, but now I have my cat in her own room, to keep her separated from my other three cats. As much as I am praying for my cat, I hope that your cat will also live long too.
I have an FIV+ cat, an old boy we rescued.. the vet was demanding we put him down, we did not, he had been let down by others so why make the cat pay the ultimate price for human stupidity... So he is slowly learning to be a non feral cat again. He will never be able to join in with our other cats but he has a big cat enclosure and plenty of food and love which is a start... Looking to get him his own home where he is a single indoor cat. Took me two years to even get to touch him, then only a matter of weeks until I could pat and scratch him, then it was time for the vet and I knew what they would say right away "FIV+ so best euthanise him" .. honestly after two years of building trust that felt like the ultimate betrayal so we took the hard option and worked to rehab him... He is doing ok and loves pats and food :-)
That's awesome. I am in the same situation. He is currently in a seperate room but we want him to be free in the house with our other cats. Would that ever be possible?
@@beem1326 yes once the testosterone has gone from him being fixed he should be fine.. Our Burmese cat and Waffles (the HIV+) are now the best of friends, always with each other which is great to see.
Thank you so much for this. Today I took my 2 year old Tabby to the vet. I rescued him from the street when he was 6 months old. He was neutered before I adopted him so it seems he got it from his mom. I'm so sad and devastated over this.
I took in a stray cat(female) a little over a year ago. I already had a cat that is 11 yrs. old & a male. I learned she was estimated to be 4 or 5 yrs. old & fiv positive. She is the sweetest cat & gets along with my older male cat. The only way we could keep her is because my other cat is a very mellow cat. They are great friends and she is a nice addition to our family.
We get a lot of pet parents asking about FIV+ cats and their life expectancy. It really depends on how well they are taken care of. Thanks for sharing this informative video 🤗
Hubby and I just adopted this 3 year old I named Clovis. He was a stray, we got him from the HAWS humane society in Waukesha WI. He is FIV positive and the vet papers here show his lungs are healthy, but he is wheezing a lot. We are taking him to the vet this Wednesday or Thursday. I am nervous now because we are almost at max bonding level and he is my child, the hubby bought him for me as an early wedding anniversary gift. 😭
It's so awesome that you chose to talk about FIV... My precious Chloe has been sneezing a lot from last night and even now, is that a good enough reason to take her to the vet? On a personal note... I'm totally loving your hair being swept to the side instead of to the front.
Thanks! I decided to go a new way with my haircut :) Anddddd, I''m not sure. I would personally keep an eye on her for a few days before I took her in and see if she got better. However if she changed behavior (acting sluggish, or just different than normal) then I would take her in ASAP.
Great video, I agree with everything except the “trust your vet” part. I run a cat rescue and if I had a nickel for every time I’ve seen of it screw up I’d be a billionaire so moral of the story ; get a second opinion.
my cat of 9 years got tested FIV positive (got sick all the time before) and my vet immediately wanted to put him down ☹. My mom almost did it but called me just beforehand and I said "obviously not". He's a bit tired, but still looks happy and plays and eats his food.
Very helpful man thanks. My cat got diagnosed with FIV not too long ago and I had to give up another recently adopted kitty. Broke my heart giving her away. But after much research and consulting with my vet I found the same conclusion as your video. FIV spreads mostly only through wounds inflated by the FIV positive cat, so like you said if the cats get along well and you monitor them they can live together with no major issues. I also am giving my FIV positive cat daily doses of feline-natural anti-biotics for her immune system, according to the vet it helps them to live longer but most significantly helps them maintain a stronger immune system for a longer period of time. That said I'm still thinking hard about adopting another cat, 1 is already enough but I do be sad when thinking she doesn't have a buddy
Thank you, just found out today 2,11,20 my new kitty had fiv:( your video and some minor research helped calm what began as a gloomy dreadful day to Hope, thanks man
We found out that my 14(human years) year old cat is sadly FIV+ 🥺 He has this constant nose bleeding that does not stop. The vet put the pet cone on, in addition he had laser surgery on his nose. The fun side is that he is under Anaesthesia walking around wobbly like an alien on the moon. He is staring at the wall right now and i'm watching out for him 🤣🤣
My outdoor stray cat I have been feeding for 2 years just tested positive for FIV. Vet tells me he can’t go back outside due to risk of spreading it to other cats. But I also have my own indoor cats. Very sad and stressed right now. Thanks for the video.
I am in the same exact situation right now. So what did you do in the end? I am thinking about neutering him and bringing him inside with my other cats and just hoping they don't fight but not sure.
@@beem1326 He continued to live outside, so I did not obey my vet. However we JUST moved to a new house, I brought him with us, and he has been living inside along with my other cats. No issues. Everyone is happy.
My cat has one. He is 4 years old, I believe he got it from other cats while fighting or doing the dirty thing. Is there a chance that my cat will be cured from this? When he walks, he kinda struggles to walk normally. Edit: He passed away on New Year's night...
I rescued a cat and I’ve had him home with me for about a month. I had him vaccine right away and when I went for his boosters plus him to be neutered I was hit with the news of him being FIV +. I’m so sad o never heard of this. I have a house cat I’ve raised since birth and now I’m scared her has caught the FIV from the new cat I rescued. They are both so perfect 😭
Mine lived very healthy until his last 3 years or so it was like bad allergies he was 13 and we have another with the same symptoms that is now 9 :( I think they got it together from a Tom cat that was in the yard.
Hello! Would it be alright if I used this video for a business presentation? I am trying to start an animal rescue focused on FIV cats and pit bull type dogs.
Lentivirus literally means slow virus. It's just a category of viruses that has a really long latent period. There can be a long period between infection and any symptoms. If FIV is anything like HIV, it can also make its way into the brain and cause issues just through that without a secondary opportunistic infection
It isn't big deal, I am the mum of one of these gorgeous creatures. Keep em away from Dairy produce,the6 must be kept indoors(cross infection) just love your baby
We have a cat we adopted as a stray that tested FIV positive on his first vet visit. The vest immediately told us we had to put him down. I said no. If it was a person with HIV, that would not be the case. He is super healthy, muscular, w a fat jelly. I wonder if he had the vaccine in his previous owner. It's obvious he was not feral by the way he took to being indoors only. He's hyper and full of energy as he's young, but not wild.
My tomcat passed away 2 weeks ago, due to FIV. I decided together with his doctor to euthanize him. He was 8 years old, and fot the last 2 years and a half didn't get out of the house at all. He had ulcers in his mouth, and couldn't eat anymore, and got dehydrated. After a week and a half of treatment, the doctor decided to test him, because he did not have a response to the treatment, and he was positive. His health condition became worse, hos body temperature was 32, and we took the final decision. I feel so guilty now, I love him and I miss him, it's very sad for me.

The only 2 cat i ever had both died of fiv, one was 15 and the second had 12, the sad thing is we couldn't do anything go make them feel better their last days
Hello I’m very scared I have a cat that I love to death and he is fiv positive and he absolutely loves being outside we can’t stop him we have tried while we are on vacation and he gets out what do i do
That is usually how they get infected, and I had always preached against allow cats outside. You should keep your cat in their own room with a window to look out at.
I had a cat with this but I didn’t know and we didn’t know it had fiv and blood cancer and it started acting strange eating less so I took it to the vet and I had to get it uthnized it was I think 14 so it had a good long life
Something that also be said. Cats that have also been recently been inoculated by FIV vaccines can also test positive for FIV. If your cat tests positive for FIV, it's not the end of the world but you should also treat your cat as though they are positive just in case.
Howdy everyone, im new to the channel. If anyone has any recommendations or tips and tricks on how to care for a cat with FIV please do not hesitate to reply to this message. Now I don’t feel bad for keeping my eight boys locked down. You got me scared though not gonna lie. What if my cat who got knocked up by a big feral Tom before she got snippy had this? It's my 1st time to have a cat. I named her Bella... Little did I know he was a boy. And yesterday, i took him to the vet and he tested positive for FIV. Idk what to do 😭 i am upset and cant stop myself from crying...
@@jasmineharper5256 Hi! My Bella is still alive up to this date 😽 He is strong, lively, bossy, and a little bit snob. He survived that “FIV Phase” of his life. I did not let him undergo FIV Test again. After being diagnosed with FIV, i took him to the other vet and she prescribed him with Chicken’s liver to bring back his appetite. His diet is boiled fish and sometimes dry cat food. I also give him vitamins.
Wait cats have aids? My dad: whoops I dropped some chicken My mom: oh don’t worry let the cat eat it. 10 hours later huh where’s the cat Me:ummmmmm cats have aids and now I will give you some see
It's not usually transmitted through mating but I think maybe it can be? When we brought our stray boy in the vet said it can be contracted via fighting so cats biting each other or scratching or it can be contracted from prey for example if the prey was to bite or scratch your cat.
Hi. I am really sorry to hear that. I have lost a pet once and it was one of the hardest things for me. We have 2 cats now and are awaiting test results. The vet says it might be FIV but we have to wait till we get the results. @@mylittleponypetergriffin7687 Just make sure everything is clean for him to eat and drink. I filter my water to be extra safe. I got my cat and he’s such a sweetheart!
same here! good luck(:
@@h.s.6269 If/when I’m in a position to buy a house with a yard or rent an apartment with a patio, that’s exactly what I’ll do.
the outside neighborhood stray cat moved into my yard 3 years ago. he tested positive and vet said put him down but pound said thats not common anymore. cat weighs 14# and is a very sweet cat, great mouser too. he is free to roam, but shows up here for meals! i get him shots when my cat goes in. this summer i let him come inside from the heat but mostly stays outside. he has several boxes covered in plastic to sleep in around the yard, plus i built him a house using a cooler with 2 cat flap doors and a critter heater for winter. he is probably 10 years old. i don't want him living inside because he claws furniture, but am concerned that his breathing is sometimes audible when he sleeps and he coughs now and then. other than that he is quite the chub and in good health.
Ive taken in a really neglected cat and his results came back positive for fiv just trying to keep my kitty happy Nd safe. Thanks for infooo
Is it still alive
Thankyou, very much for this info, my cat was diagnosed today, so I really found this helpful, hi from u.k
By the way we name her Luna(moon)🥰🥰
Thank you for the info in this video👍🏼💯
I appreciate the encouragement from you as I had recently discovered my cat is FIV positive. I cried so hard when it was announced to me and I could not go into work that day. It is still difficult to accept, but now I have my cat in her own room, to keep her separated from my other three cats. As much as I am praying for my cat, I hope that your cat will also live long too.
Hey is your cat still alive
...you need to blink more lol
He does blink but all this bicep is clips put together which is why he isn’t.
'Who let the virus out"... not funny on so many levels
LMAOO @ “you need to”
I have an FIV+ cat, an old boy we rescued.. the vet was demanding we put him down, we did not, he had been let down by others so why make the cat pay the ultimate price for human stupidity...
@@stonehartfloydfan Great to hear. Thanks!
He will be fine just be on point with his health
It's so awesome that you chose to talk about FIV... My precious Chloe has been sneezing a lot from last night and even now, is that a good enough reason to take her to the vet?
On a personal note... I'm totally loving your hair being swept to the side instead of to the front.
Thanks! I decided to go a new way with my haircut :)
Anddddd, I''m not sure. I would personally keep an eye on her for a few days before I took her in and see if she got better. However if she changed behavior (acting sluggish, or just different than normal) then I would take her in ASAP.
Cats and Pats thanks for replying. She remains her crazy energetic self...with the sniffles, but it's not as bad as before.
@@Tai-chan. howz she doing
Great video, I agree with everything except the “trust your vet” part. I run a cat rescue and if I had a nickel for every time I’ve seen of it screw up I’d be a billionaire so moral of the story ; get a second opinion.
I agree. I just had a vet advise me to put my cat down for this . I’m glad I decided to research it myself first.
my cat of 9 years got tested FIV positive (got sick all the time before) and my vet immediately wanted to put him down ☹.
Have you tried lysine?
I subscribe becuse of this video thank you for all the info. My cat is FIV+ but shes doing good and I love her so much. I will keep her healthy ♡
He is staring at the wall right now and i'm watching out for him 🤣🤣
This is an important video. All owners of a cat should watch this video.
I totally agree! Plus, cat owners needs to be aware of the health risk of allow cats to go outside. I keep all of mine inside.

I know this is a serious video, but every time he says dental, it sounds like diddle, and it makes me giggle😁
Although scary, with proper diagnosis and treatment FIV can be managed and many kitties can still maintain their quality of life 🥰
I just realise my new adopt old cat got fiv.. Thank you this video.. I am less worrysome now..
My cat has one. He is 4 years old, I believe he got it from other cats while fighting or doing the dirty thing. Is there a chance that my cat will be cured from this? When he walks, he kinda struggles to walk normally.

Do you think feline hiv can lead to cancer or tumors in cats ? Just wondering
Very helpful thank u
I rescued a cat and I’ve had him home with me for about a month. I had him vaccine right away and when I went for his boosters plus him to be neutered I was hit with the news of him being FIV +. I’m so sad o never heard of this. I have a house cat I’ve raised since birth and now I’m scared her has caught the FIV from the new cat I rescued. They are both so perfect 😭
thanks for uploading this!
Cutie! Great voice for the video too!!
Mine lived very healthy until his last 3 years or so it was like bad allergies he was 13 and we have another with the same symptoms that is now 9 :( I think they got it together from a Tom cat that was in the yard.
I just took in a FIV+ male cat & am doing research about it. I have 4 other cats & Im keeping separated while I learn more about the topic
I am in the same situation. What did you end up doing? I need help
We have two without one with. As long as they don’t bite each other fine. They don’t bite.
Do they require a special diet?
My grandma owns outdoor cats that are tame and most of them have the FIV.
That is usually how they get infected, by other cats outdoors. I had always preached against cats being outside and this is the reason why.
I have a 16 year old fiv+ cat. My little Black one. He lives with 2 other negative cats

I'm happy to see a video on this. There needs to be more awareness of FIV.

Nope. It doesn’t .
How strange. What does make dogs immune?

My 5 month old kitten has it 😢
Something that also be said. Cats that have also been recently been inoculated by FIV vaccines can also test positive for FIV. If your cat tests positive for FIV, it's not the end of the world but you should also treat your cat as though they are positive just in case.

Yes as long they dont bite eachother apparently.
my cat just got diagnosed with FIV ... will they die?
No but their body is weaker and less likely to recover from something. My cat has it too. So keep them inside only.
Went to the vet today and guess what....

Ofc, put your "handsome" face as a thumbnail
I just heard a video say testing for feline AIDS and not FIV
OK... after watching....unfortunately...no cats for me.
So I'm really curious cuz I dont think you mentioned, is it sexually transmitted like HIV is? Like can cats pass it to eachother that way?
It's not usually transmitted through mating but I think maybe it can be? When we brought our stray boy in the vet said it can be contracted via fighting so cats biting each other or scratching or it can be contracted from prey for example if the prey was to bite or scratch your cat.
What happened to you buddy? Hopefully the boogeyman 😷🦇😷 didn’t get you.
my cat died yesterday because of FIV :(
Hi. I am really sorry to hear that. I have lost a pet once and it was one of the hardest things for me. We have 2 cats now and are awaiting test results. The vet says it might be FIV but we have to wait till we get the results. I am so sorry for bringing this up and maybe it's because I'm super anxious and trying to read whatever is on the internet about this and talking to a million people. Would you mind sharing how it was your baby? When he/she was diagnosed and the immediate precautions you took after finding out? I'm really sorry once again for bringing this up for you but any piece of advice or an idea of the timeline would be really helpful.
