Muzzle training Lucky

All dogs should be muzzle trained so that they will be prepared to wear a muzzle if a situation arises where one is needed. This is a basket muzzle that allows the dog to eat treats, breath freely and drink water through it. I will provide the link below. Muzzles should only be used for short-term use, not left on all the time. This is not meant to stop a dog from barking and trying to use a muzzle for that reason is inhumane. The dog can still bark with this basket muzzle on.
To muzzle train your dog you put a treat inside the front of basket and allow the dog to put his face into the basket to eat the treat. Don’t shove the muzzle onto the dog’s face- let the dog go into it on his own accord. If the dog won’t put his face in the basket then just start by holding a treat near the muzzle and reward him for approaching the muzzle and keep working in small steps from there.
My dog will put his face in the muzzle basket easily but gets skittish with the actual strap part that goes around the head. He will hesitate going into the muzzle if he sees my hand on the strap. This is a common problem. We are working through this by giving treats when he comes near the muzzle with my hand on the strap even if he won’t go all the way into the basket part. This training takes a lot of patience and the willingness to keep taking baby steps towards the end goal: having the muzzle on the dog and fastened.
