You do stunning renovations! Your attention to detail and the quality of your work is impeccable. I have a GE Monitor Top that I would love to have you repair the compressor on but I know it would cost a fortune to ship it to you from IA. Keep up the great work and thanks for taking the time to record and share with us!
Thank you for the compliment! There are so few who still work on the Monitor Tops it is very hard to find service locally. Folks do ship them to me; some from as far as California.
THIS IS AN AMAZING WORK ALL AROUND AN PROOFS THAT ALL STUFF WAS MADE TO LAST NOW DAYS EVERYTHING IS MADE TO ONLY LAST A FEW YEARS. EXCELLENT WORK KEEP IT UP.
Thank you! I can tell you how to do this job. Read up on the forums and get manuals from the era when these were made. The most important key thing is patience. I am happy the subtitles help. It's confusing to me as to why UA-cam provides them on some of my videos and not on others. I have never explicitly told UA-cam to not provide them however on some videos it always says they are not available.
@davida1hiwaaynet this channel is one of my favorites on YT. I have a 51 -53 GE fridge that my parents bought new that I'm going to restore. I was running pretty much non stop until 2021 when they moved. It's mostly cosmetic restore but at least if it needs more I can do it due to your channel. I also like your philosophy of repair as much original as you can. They will never make products like this again ( or parts like these have) so cheers to ya brother for a great channel.
You do excellent work and so does your painter. It is beautiful and anyone with two functioning synapses in their brain would want that for their own. I know I would. It will most certainly outlast me at this point. This is exactly why I love old machinery. Well done sir.
That plastic adhesive says it contains MDI- methylene diphenyl diisocyanate- a chemical commonly used in the production of polyurethane foam insulation.
That makes sense. It is a urethane product I believe. It has the same smell as expanding foam. I like it as opposed to epoxy or polyester because it remains somewhat flexible and therefore is less likely to crack or peel when used on flexible parts.
How much does a a restoration like this cost? I just got a similar westinghouse fridge… similar issues potentially. There is a forum where I can learn how to go about getting it in working order?
I have an old GE frige in my basement. Id love restore it like you have yours. Can you tell me some place in Winston Salem North Carolina where i could get this done.
Hi Mona. The fridge in the video belongs to an owner in California. He shipped it to me in Alabama for the restoration you see. Feel free to send me an e-mail and I can help you out. My e-mail address is located on my channel about page.
thanks I just chatted with Jonathan from case parts and hes helping me out. I mentioned your video and he is headed to watch it soon-he was great and was really happy about the recommendation from you. im doing a 50s westy as well. thanks again-great job
I have an old General Electric chest freezer dating from the early 1950s that used to belong to my Grandmother. I stopped working this year. It runs but does not freeze. I would like to fix it but I have no idea how to troubleshoot it. Any advice?
Hi there. Sorry to hear that your GE freezer stopped working. Does the compressor still run? That will be the first troubleshooting step. If the compressor doesn't run; the problem is likely related to the wiring or thermostat or start-relay. If the compressor does run but there is no cooling, you're probably looking at a leaked system. Many of these had aluminum evaporator coils which fail over time due to corrosion.
wow, that Fridge looks great!. I believe my grandmother had one like that for over 40 years. I recently obtained a Westinghouse vending machine with a very similar compressor as this and the coca cola chest cooler compressor you restored. The compressor has a service valve on it that was added and I would assume it was either serviced for low refrigerant. Do you see any problem with charging system with 152a without fully vacuuming out existing gas. I just don't have the equipment to go through the thorough process you do. your thoughts?
Good morning Jon. The Westinghouse compressors are very durable for sure. I expect your grandfather's fridge is still going somewhere! As for charging R152A on top of R12, there is a lot to say. The short answer is, yes, you can and it will work just fine. The long answer is; US laws prohibit mixing of refrigerants. This is part of the environmental rules they passed along with the CFC ban. Fortunately, the federal government cannot alter the laws of physics. Therefore no matter what sort of puffery they purvey; R12 and R152A will mix and work just fine. In fact, the Carrier company used such a blend in their home air conditioning systems. They sold the blend as R500. You can still find R500 systems here and there. I actually have a vintage Carrier heat pump with its full charge of R500. There is a legitimate reason not to top-off charge any system, however. Once the charge gets too low, the low pressure side of the system runs in a vacuum. Any leaks in the system will draw in air, thus contaminating the remaining refrigerant. The only way to properly service your Westinghouse cooler is to perform a proper evacuation on it, with a vacuum pump. That will remove air and moisture. Then you can start over with a charge of a known type of refrigerant. When people add those clamp-on line taps, you really never know what they put in there. Professionals will use a brazed-in service valve; or will pinch and solder the service stems after charging. Hacks leave those clamp-on line puncturing taps in place.
@@davida1hiwaaynet last night, before I received your reply, I charged the system with a can of the R152a. This morning I have it running with frost on the coils and a bit less on the collector. The compressor and return line are warm to the touch as they should be, I believe. The compressor has been running a while trying to get to minimal temp of thermostat. I handicapped the unit because it was already loaded with beverage. I am hoping that we can get to minimal temp and have a successful shut down and start up soon. It has been running for about 1.5 hrs. Is this too long? Let me know if pics would help. I am not much for posting on UA-cam as I really have not tried it.
Good to hear that you've got frost on the coils! It should run an hour or so before cycling off, if it was loaded with drinks. If it seems to be running constantly and not cycling off, there could be something stuck in the thermostat. Would need to know the surface temperature of the evaporator at the point where the thermostat sending like is clamped to it. Feel free to e-mail me. My e-mail is available on my channel about page.
Hey I have this same model what’s a good place or website to get parts for it. Looking for a new door seal and the freezer cover if that’s out there somewhere. Thanks.
Thanks for the comment! There are no new parts available specifically for these refrigerators. You have to adapt parts for modern fridges, use universal parts, or fabricate parts as necessary. The door gasket came from CaseParts Company; a commercial cooler supplier. They make a custom mitered and welded corner gasket. As for the freezer door, those are very hard to get. Nobody makes them new, leaving only custom-made; or salvaged parts as an option.
Looks great, another job well done!
Nicely done Dave.... Awesome just Awesome. Saving history one piece at a time....
Thanks 👍
Hope all is well with you, love the new projects, keep us posted. 👍
Things are going pretty well! Just very busy!

All these repainted fridges, are they porcelain?
Hi Timmy. All of the fridges I have had painted were originally painted cabinets. You cannot paint over porcelain with any hope of success.
Where do you get parts for these fridges
There are no new parts available. You have to adapt universal parts or parts for current models. That, or you have to rebuild or manufacture parts.
