The Most Important Guitar Of The 1990s?

- In the 1990s something wonderful happened that led directly to a resurgence of interest in acoustic music and the acoustic guitar in particular. MTV Unplugged!
Perhaps the most important of these “acoustic” concerts was performed by Eric Clapton and his band in 1992 at Bray studios - the resulting album would sell over 26 million copies worldwide and become Eric Clapton’s most successful record.
Clapton performed much of this concert on a 1939 Martin 000 42 which became the impetus for a long standing signature model - first a limited number 000 42 and then a standard issue 000 28.
In terms of longevity and popularity the Martin 000 28 EC model could very well be the most important guitar model of the 1990s.
I hope you enjoy this video!
Michael
What a beautiful instrument, masterfully demonstrated!
Thank you very much my dude!
EC has always been a personal guitar hero for me. At 10 years old I wasn’t a huge unplugged fan but with age I quickly learned acoustic guitar is pure and simple the real sound. So many use distortion and effects to mask the guitar and their lack of ability. Acoustics are the real thing and there is nowhere to hide. You either can make it sing or you can’t. This guitar is a holy grail instrument to me. EC will always be my favorite.
Very true! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Lovely playing. I love these guitars. I'm lucky enough to own a 000-42EC. I saw them being built at the Martin factory, and decided I had to have one. The sustain is incredible.
You lucky dog!
@@ellenrik Thank you, I am. I have number 209 of 461 (the number taken from the LP 461 Ocean Boulevard). The original range of 000-42EC was actually Indian Rosewood, but due to popularity, Martin released a second set of another 461 but in Brazilian.
These new 000-28EC (like Michael is playing) are superb and I love them, though the price today is not far short of what the 42 was 1995. My wife was not at all happy with me!
Michael, I have #203 of the first 500 Martin 000-28 EC's made. I bought it new back then and I've had quite a few other guitars come and go since then, but I would never let it go. Love the guitar. Now almost 30 years old It's seen some miles and looks it with a few dings, scratches and a little checking on the finish, It's top has aged into a wonderful deep carmel/amber color and has that amazing dry woody tone older Martins are known for.
That is so cool!
I bought a 000-28 as my first real guitar. Sold it after a few years seeking other thrills. I have regretted selling it ever since. I now know that it takes five years for a guitar to mature and its sound to blossom
Ah… the one that got away… sorry to hear that, I hope you find another!
Man, I love your playing. So beautiful.
Thank you! That means a lot
Lot´s of feeling in that playing. Makes it enjoying to listen to
Great playing!! Great guitar!
@@curtvahle2018 thank you very much!
Just love a 'traditional' looking guitar like this. Sunburts and bowl backs I know about. I owned an Ovation Balladeer but luckily it was stolen in 1986 😊
That is fortunate!
A friend of mine has a 1929 000 45 ! WOW IS IT EVER NICE ! He left me play it a little I gave it back to him because it was worth almost as much as my house !
@@752brickie you could always live in the case?
@@MichaelWatts I keep wanting to keep it safe for him but so far it has not happened!!
I believe in 2012 it was worth $60,000 ??? So now it has to be worth a lot more!
He also had an old 00-28 that I played a lot and it is also an amazing guitar too !!! I beliewve it is almost as old as the 00-45!
@@752brickie Maybe soon come the days when you can buy a loaf of bread for that guitar
@@lebe220 Yes the days are coming fast a loaf of bread will buy a bag of gold.
Fun! Thanks. Great playing, as always.
Thank you!
I am looking forward to this next. Thank 😂! Great stuff!
Thank you John!
How wonderful, Thank You for sharing.
My pleasure!
What a beautiful guitar and as always, love your playing.
Thank you so much!
The EC is nothing more than the venerable 000-28, but with a V shaped neck and a little more spacing at the bridge, to ease fingerstyle. My dream guitar. I will buy it when I will celebrate something I'm waiting for since years
I'm a clumsy picker, mainly a bass player, but I just got myself a 000 12E to mess around on. If I could sound 1% as good as you do, I would definitely buy that EC model! In your hands, it had everything I love to hear from an acoustic. Great, and tasteful playing! Thank you for the inspiration.
Very cool Dave! Thank you for watching
There's just something about the american traditional acoustic look that really does it for me,
Beautiful playing as always, very mellow sound 👌
Thank you very much! I know what you mean - it’s a great look!
you play beautifully! I love.."if I could change the world", song by Eric Clapton but your beginning song Altho similar, was just so smooth, that I had to go pick up my EC guitar and try it ...didn't achieve it at first but I will be looking at this over and over to try to get that style. When I grow up I wanna play like you & EC of course, keep plucking ....❤🎶😎subscribed!
You can’t do both! Seriously though, thank you so much, that means a lot
Lovely!
Thank you!
I bought my first Martin in 2017 and my choice ended being either a OMC28E or an EC model, I went with the OMC28E because of the longer scale = snappier tone for rhythm. It surprised me a bit. I spent 4 hours going through maybe 20 guitars and found what I needed. Today I would like to add a guitar with a little more volume and midrange, maybe a mahogany body. The OMC28E is very comfortable and make changing between electric and acoustic a breeze in a live setting.
Very cool! Thank you for watching!
Great video, thank you.
Thank you Jim!
Strings ? Hi Michael, great video….gotta love the 28EC. Have you found a set of strings that work best with your guitar ?
Thank you for watching! I use Elixir 12-53 PB at all times
One of the best sounding martins without a doubt . Sadly my guitar players favourite which was killed by TSA after a flight back from LA split from the neck heel right through the body ! Still wounded by that !
Oh no! That’s absolutely harrowing!
I've always dreamed of owning either the Eric Clapton 000 or the Mayer OM. Unfortunately, both are well out of my price range. However, when looking at Martins at a big guitar shop in Sydney, I played an M-36 and was blown away. A great guitar and well worth checking out. Still expensive, but much more affordable than the signature models.
Yeah I’ve got a soft spot for those M36s too!
Don't forget that other companies make OM guitars, often for half Martin's prices (e.g. Furch and Larrivee).
Beautifully played! Where do you learn your fingerstyle playing?
Thank you very much! I studied classical as a kid and then had great teachers like Pierre Bensusan, Isaac Guillory and John Renbourn
Sweet! :-)
wow great blues lesson, what was the name of the guitar maker again?
Martin guitars make the Eric Clapton 000 28 model
You finally got THE standard fingerstyle acoustic in yer lap.(In my opinion.)
There can be only one!
Probably the best sounding Martin I ever heard.I have been debating a choice of a Taylor 816CE and a 00042 but most auditions have sounded tinny but I love the sound of this .Hopefully its not just your touch making that difference. What gauge strings are you using? Best wishes.
Well I try my best but the guitar is doing a good job too! These are Elixir 12-53 PB
Thanks very much What would you advise Taylor or Martin
My 000-42 is the only guitar I have or need. It does everything I need it to and better than I deserve it to be.
Very cool!
000 vs OM is not just the scale length what makes them different. To my understanding the shorter scale comes also with a lighter bracing.
Ah yes, there is that too
How do you get such a sweet tone? Newbie here... are you playing without nails? I've been thinking of trying that.
That’s part of it, I keep my nails very short and polished. 90% though is hand position and feel and that comes with time and experience.
or get an Eastman with Adi top instead. Adi is lovely.
I was recently offered (30 days ago) near mint 1996 EC guitar. $3500 US.
I sold stuff for 30 days, offed stuff I have owned for years.
Appointment made, showed up on time and the seller changed his mind.
Me.. out 2 Martins and some other stuff. P issed auf.
Bottom line, bring a trailer and cash.( an old car adage) Trust no one.
Argh!
@@MichaelWatts Not unlike the feeling of having a guitar stolen.
Try a Yamaha!
I think by this point just about every single guitarist in the world has tried a Yamaha. And they’re very nice.!
Always love watching and listening to you play. Thank You!
Thank you Glenn!
Beautiful playing Michael! I was in middle school when Clapton’s unplugged album came out and instantly fell in love with his Martin guitar sound. Couldn’t afford buy this guitar for a long time but I was fortunate enough to recently purchase the #5 ever made 000-28EC which was a in property of Clapton’s close friend. This guitar sounds absolutely magical and I can’t stop playing! The warmth and sensitivity and balance of this instrument is quite remarkable.
@@steve821821 very cool Steve! Thank you very much for tuning in!
I love mine. Neck profile is not everyone’s cup of tea however it fits my hand perfectly.
Nice!
Fantastic installment of your channel. I love the 000-42 and have one from 1943. It sounds incredible and plays amazingly well.
Oh very cool! Thank you so much for watching
That 000 sounds good! Love 24.9 scale....especially tuned down 1/2 step. Bottom comes alive. Play like butter.
Absolutely!
I played a 000-28-EC at Willcutt guitars in Lexington KY about 15 years ago. It was the best sounding guitar I had ever played at that point in my life. It was one of those moments when the hair on the back of my neck stood up because I was hearing something that really resonated deeply with something in my brain....and I'm a mediocre player at best, but that guitar made me sound better. If I could have afforded it I would have bought it.
Great episode! Love your posts! Thank you 😊
@@PhilHyland thank you so much Phil!
I ordered a 00028EC in early 2000 when I started getting decent pay Chqs. I was always a 1990s Clapton fan and it was one my first expensive guitars I ordered brand new and It took 10 months to arrive like a baby. Well, 24 years later i am still hacking away on it. It spent a few years under the bed as I had D15 martin. But when you play an open A minor on the 00028, your heart just melts. It has aged well. And the warmth from it now is next level. The one thing about is when you leave the case open in the room over night the whole room is filled with that beautiful Rosewood smell in the morning. It just an amazing piece of martin history. Many Takamine's and Yamaha acoustics have some and gone, but the 000EC remains with me. I agree with you, that this unplugged era prob saved Acoustics' and the Eric Clapton 00028 saved Martin.
Absolutely! We have a lot to be thankful for
Not necessarily
What are strings make and gauge please? Sorry for asking ..
12-53 Elixir PB - the only silly question is the one you don’t ask!
I very nearly bought one of these this morning. I drove an hour, after being told it was mint. Right away I saw a wierd twist in the neck and it look like the fretboard was lifting. They offered a discount but I passed.
Ah, well in that case you doubtless did the right thing!
@MichaelWatts yeah. Going now to check out some more. Never ends.
But you haven't lived until you try the Mertin HJ28,if you can find one.Be careful, the smile one of those can bring means you are in danger of your head falling off.........................................................
That is true - very good guitar!
I acquired a hand built guitar with very similar specs. No name no numbers anywhere, the finish looks factory however !?!? But the sound and sustain wow. Im very fortunate.
Very cool
Michael, I am a huge fan of your music and this channel. I really like my like my late 90s OM28 VR. I typically tune down 1/2 or a full step. I get a deep, resonant full tone and easy bends when appropriate.
Thank you very much Tom!
These days I often hear guitar reviewers slagging off Martin guitars preferring the sound of guitars from less mass produced luthiers. I have a 2006 HD-28 and I think it sounds fantastic, rich and balanced it certainly grabs my attention every time I play it.
Martin are capable of some incredible guitars!
I have a 2002 model and I adore it. After watching the MTV unplugged Eric Clapton special as a kid I always swore I’d buy that guitar one day - and I did
Very cool! Congrats!
Gah! What a pleasure to hear you play these. This took me back. For sure.
Thank you so much James!
My favorit guitar when I was young - and in your hands its just bravo
Thank you Svend!
Nicely done ...what a great instrument...
Thank you!
I've played one of those and it's so easy to play. Very nice!
Thank you for watching David!
A great watch again, thank you.
Thank you so much!
How it plays in dadgad?
Actually I kept it in standard all the time it was with me. I imagine it does a good job though!
