I have taken pictures of every rock before they went in the tumbler and a lot of Montana rocks are already rolling. There will be a video to show how they look coming out.

I think I need to put Minnesota and Montana on my bucket list. So many beautiful rocks. I’ve really enjoyed these videos a big thanks to Kate for being your guide.

@@MichiganRocks yeah, but I saw the video.. she's gotchya there. 😊 her excitement is contagious and I subscribed. Thanks for introducing another wonderful hounder ✌️
Sage & Cactus pretty much standard for the plains states. Certain times of the year cactus make what we call cactus apples it makes good jelly. It is nice to see you on another adventure away from the water, well almost just not from a lake. Have a great weekend Rob thanks for the share.
To a westerner it's fun to hear that you've planted sage in your yard. Even though it grows just about everywhere here we still appreciate it and enjoy its gray green foliage and great smell. I'm happy that you were able to find agates that made Kate a little bit envious! She must hold some kind of record in pounds of agates found. Thank you for sharing another fun hunt with Kate and for slabbing a few of your finds.
Kate calls it sage brush, which I realized I had heard of after she said it. She wasn't sure if it was the same kind of sage that you can eat. Do you know? Could I put this in the thanksgiving stuffing? (Not that I make the stuffing, but hypothetically.)
@@MichiganRocks When I began writing the comment I was thinking sage brush, Artemesia Tridentata, but then I wondered if you were actually talking about the herb which is a member of the mint family. So you don't want to use sage brush in your turkey dressing, or in any other food - it smells great but it tastes very bitter. That was great. Excellent idea breaking away to show the cut versions. 👍Always good to see what you do after you find them. Would love to see a guitar pick.
Awesome video! I can't tell you how much fun it was to see you in all these different places doing what you love! Your finds were great and I loved the slabs you made.
@@MichiganRocks yeah in the Billings area there in the south hills and other parts following the Yellowstone river. You can find them on the river as well some have Baculite Fossil in them.
Some great finds this trip! That first piece of petrified wood was beautiful. About the 10:30 mark you found some more but I was looking at that smooth fractured looking stripey/zigzaggy one to the right lol. I'm a sucker for that style. What a great rainy day of discoveries haha, thanks for sharing!
That was fun at least for us that weren't covered in clay and mud! But you found some awesome stuff on your last day of your trip. Now you are going to have to have Kate over to Michigan for a Petoskey stone and coral hunt in Michigan and the great lakes!
The agates we find on the Pacific Ocean beaches are much smaller but have a bit more color more color. If we had agates that big, I'd buy a slab saw and make a 'stained glass' window, or maybe build them into a small tabletop and with a backlight.
Kate made a backlit table recently with agate slabs on top. The agates in Michigan are also smaller and very colorful. There are lots of different agates all over the world.
I'm glad that your last day was a good one! Yup, we have sage all over the place in the west. Wonderful plant to have but not a true sage. It's actually a member of the wormwood tribe. In SoCal we have several varieties of them, all with different scents. Love them!
@@MichiganRocks You could use it as a seasoning but it would likely have a pretty strong flavor. If the sage in your garden has square stems then it's a true sage, if not it's an Artemisia and a nice smelling ornamental. The seeds are great for a bird garden.
Another great video. I love how you cut to the stone getting sliced. You tilted the cut pieces back and forth and I thought I saw an optical effect- not like shadow banding, but definitely something. If you polish, please show us. Great road trip. Safe travels.
Excellent video. That jasper is so cool. I love dendrites. The Montana slabs are gorgeous. You do know that agate and chalcedony are essentially quartz, right? ❤️🎸🏏
My grandfathers brother and his wife used to go to Montana hunting agates. Well his wife became wheelchair bound and basically non cognitive, so he thought, i can strap her down in the trailer and go agate hunting once again however family convinced him otherwise. Now that's love.... of agates. Lol... Never got to meet my Rock Hound great uncle but from what i hear he was really into the hobby and we would have gotten along great. Can't wait to strap my wife in the trailer and go for an adventure. 😁 Just kidding. I'll most likely be the one in the trailer. Hey as long as i get to go. Lol...
Nice finds Rob. I just have one question. Why did you go to Montana during the spring thaw season? You gotta go AFTER the yellowstone goes down! I can't believe you didn't know sagebrush grows in the high deserts of the American west. Now you know👍
I planned this trip months in advance. This was the time Kate recommended. She likes to get out before the runoff starts. She said that it's somewhat unpredictable, but thought that early May would be a good chance of getting there before the river came up. I was camping, so I was also worried about snow or really cold night time temperatures, so it was tricky to get the timing just right. I was late for some of Kate's favorite river spots, but I still had a really good time and got to see four pretty different types of terrain while I was there. As for the sage brush, I have heard of sage brush, but had never seen it. I kind of forgot that it existed. I have only been out west one other time, when our kids were young. Everything is so different there than here. For example, we have these things we call "trees" that grow all over the place. We also have a lot more lakes and streams, some of them are Great. The whole time I was there, I missed trees. The views are amazing though. The only place I can see that far is out over on of the Great Lakes, but looking out over miles of water isn't the same as looking out over miles of land. Both are beautiful, but in very different ways.
@MichiganRocks ok I see, you were trying to go before the runoff, but it looked like you were way above the river like it came up early this may. Yeah central Montana is very arid and devoid of trees for the most part unless you go up higher in the mountains. I live in western Oregon where we have 200+ foot tall trees and I love the forests and rivers here. Maybe some day you could come to Oregon and rockhound I know you would love it. It's much more beautiful than Montana I promise!
@@mitchgillilan I'd love to go to Oregon someday. I just need to find a way for the trip to pay for itself. I make a little money on these videos, but I'm not sure if I'll break even on this trip. I have two more videos to come out yet and then I'll tally everything up. It will be easier to convince Nancy to let me go off for a couple weeks on my own if it doesn't cost a bunch of money too.
@MichiganRocks yeah I know it would probably cost even more to come all the way out west to Oregon. I think it's cool that you camp, I like to do the same when I go on rockhounding trips too. I've found that my 2 favorite states to rockhound are Arizona and Oregon, and luckily I live in Oregon so it just works out that I live here.
