  • A tear in your aorta, called a dissection, can be potentially life-threatening and require emergency surgery. The good news is, we have made great strides in treating aortic dissection and patients who deal with this problem can live a long, healthy life. Cleveland Clinic's Eric Roselli, MD, surgeon in the Department of Thoracic, explains the different types of aortic dissections and how the condition can be managed and repaired.

"Artist Kentaro Miura, best known for his manga series Berserk, died on May 6, after suffering an acute aortic dissection. He was 54." May he rest in peace.

As of 10 December 2020, I'm a 10 year survivor of a type a dissection. Still going strong thanks to my surgeons at Fairfax Hosptial in Virginia..

Jan 7th 2020 I had a type A Dissection at work .Rushed to the ER via ambulance and after a CT scan the ER doc decided to send me to UNC Chapel Hill via another Ambulance ride ( weather related helicopter was not a option). Made it to UNC and they did 6hr emergency surgery on me which saved my life.

Please please please make them check and double check you. My 28 year old son had valve sparring 13 years ago but died a few weeks ago with a rupture.

@@lindat815 so sorry to hear that, I've been steady going to my Dr's at least 4 times a year, nothing to note that has changed with me. Concerning your son, did he have any other heart problems? As a grandfather my self, I couldn't bear the loss of any of my children. I feel so sad for your loss..

@@frezz56 Thank you for your words. He had Marfan’s and had valve sparring surgery at Stanford in 2008. He seemed to be just fine and then it just happened quick.

My brother’s Type A aortic dissection was also surgically repaired at Inova Fairfax Hospital. However, he passed away barely three weeks postop. His dissection sent clots to his leg, lower spine and brain, causing devastating injuries.

Excellent explanation of thoracic aorta dissections, but would like to have all 3 categories more extensively explained.

Just had one last year about 2 weeks before my 46th birthday. Had surgery to repair it (type B) all the way from the subclavian artery all the way down into my pelvis. I thought it was gas trapped in my chest/back. I'd never heard of them before, and if my back teeth hadn't started aching, I probably would have taken sleeping pills and gone to bed. Scary.

I appreciate your use of the word delaminate (how fun) and your prioritization, as it relates to surgical vs. medical intervention. For me, nothing new was learned, but it was a warm, welcome respite from my addiction to hip hop.
