I started my 48 year firefighter/EMT career at age 18, in 1968. Up to that point, I was the first 18 year old accepted into the department. I retired in 2017, having served on 5 civilian fire departments and in the US Air Force. You get well trained, and mature pretty quickly dealing with people who are having a bad day, or even the worst day of their life. It’s a good career path, but you absolutely need to develop the ability to not let what you see and do affect your mind.theres a lot of really bad situations you are part of, and unless you’ve built up the necessary self control, it can get to you. I’ve seen guys start drinking, taking drugs, infidelity with spouses, uncontrolled anger, and mental anguish. I was fortunate that in my beginning I had a battle hardened firefighter explain all this to me and tell me either get control or go find another job.
My son just turned 18 and wants to be a firefighter. Watching this made my heart jump out of my chest, and I still can’t find it. Prayers to all of them.
I spent 6 months with my local FD training for LE courses. Since he is 18 he could check with his local FD and inquire about a 'RIDE-A-LONG' SESSION. It is where he spends a set amount of hours FOLLOWING along with the Firefighters, riding on the engines, going to call out scenes, and OBSERVING what a career in FIREFIGHTING consists of. From the station 'TONE', jumping into the engine, going to a call w/ sirens and radio chatter, and the arrival back at the station, watching how to DE-ESCALATE from all the adrenaline that just ran through yourself. It will REALLY give him a TRUE PROSPECTIVE of 'a day in the life of a firefighter' AND a new found RESPECT for FIRST RESPONDERS. 😁
It's the toughest job he will ever love. If he is serious about becoming a firefighter he needs to have at least an EMT Basic license. I retired with the rank of captain after 30 years working fire rescue and arson investigation.
@@kimberlyallen184 You are most welcome. I was able to ride the same engine with my youngest son. It was a proud dad moment. Not knowing where you folks live. He could also check into a volunteer FD close by. That would also give him a leg up. I wish him the best of luck.
Great episode as usual Zak, thank you. That fire footage was insane! I watched the "Burkhart story" when it came out. It was very, interesting & a bit eerie at the same time. Not long before you reach 60,000 subscribers. A well & truly deserved milestone. 😸 🇦🇺
These boys are true angels this was proof that they put their lives at risk every day for no matter what please have respect for firefighters they are there to help you not for you to attack! Nice vid zak and gabe!!❤
What is pretty disturbing is that many arsonists are (ex-) firefighters. They want to enjoy the thrill of getting called to the scene later on - or act off some kind of frustration.
Every time the main road crosses a crossway street the name changed in Boston!! Even the mailman we stopped to ask directions, looked at us like we had three heads!! Love to you, Gabe, Tay and all the others, stay safe!!
It definitely was gut wrenching to see the firefighters so close to falling it. I'm praying the whole time watching them up there. It isn't until Zak, Gabe and Emil were talking that I realized once again that I'm praying for the firefighters and this happened in the past not the present time.
"The main difference between LAFD Greater and LAFD Major Alarm fires is the severity of the fire and the number of firefighters and equipment needed to respond: LAFD Greater Has four severity levels, with Level 4 being the most severe and representing an immediate threat to the health and safety of residents. Some examples of LAFD Greater causes include ceiling collapses, explosions, and traumatic injuries. LAFD Major Alarm A 5 Alarm Fire is usually the highest level alarm sounded for a fire, and is considered to be the most dangerous. These fires can require up to 100 firefighters to extinguish. Some examples of LAFD Major Alarm causes include aircraft emergencies, vehicle fire fatalities, and trench rescues.
The number of firefighters and equipment responding to a fire is the most common way to determine the alarm designation. The more firefighters and vehicles that respond, the higher the alarm designation."
Greetings, everyone. Please may we all remember to LIKE & SUBSCRIBE. SHARE if you are able. Let's get C20 to 60K subs by the end of the year! I have told several people about Code20, including sending a link. Our almost 40 yr old son trained as a firefighter in the USN. Part of Recruit (basic) Training. The sailors' worst enemy is fire. The 1 time the fire alarm sounded on our son's sub (USS Oklahoma City, 1 of the "smaller" class of subs), our son happened to be on a 4 hour rest period. He was walking into the mess/rec area. He said he was the only sailor who IMMEDIATELY grabbed the nearest fire extinguisher & he shouted at the other sailors to move it. He was a little more mature & a Petty Officer 1st or 2nd class -- I don't recall his rank at that time. Anyway, even in his current capacity as an instrutor at his power plant & the local community college, he still does regular FF training, has full turn-out gear at the plant.
Incredible footage, as always! Hablo español también, Gabriél. Y es la verdad, tengo más amigos. Zak, Gabe is absolutely charming. You may call him crazy. I am an old lady, learned Spanish originally in my small Catholic elementary - middle school, then 4 years in a tiny, long defunct, Catholic girls' HS. Then, 4 years at UCSB (well, sophomore year at UC Santa Cruz. My soul was in SB). In the many decades since, I have spoken Spanish in jobs, in my chosen profession, & with friends. One of my closest friends now speaks only Spanish. & she finally is comfortable helping me with grammar!!! Yay! Welcome, Amel!!! Great footage!
I must have watched 30:03 to 30:06 like 10 times! whatever that explosion was it is a spooky image on this video! Look to the right of the fireman on the far right. Really spooky. They are so brave. Bless them.

My Grandfather, who immigrated from Germany in the late 1880's, did his banking, in Southern California, directly with the founder of that bank. Crazy. Anyway, Mother ended up married in June, 1943. My eldest brother was born in January, 1944. I believe our beloved, late Daddy was still serving in the Army (he was in uniform in their wedding fotos). Anyway, no more banking career for Mother. We live at the far east end, & I phoned the Grafitti Hotline to leave a message about lots of tagging at our pocket park. Recs & Park staff arrived within 5 minutes. 😂 They'd already had lots of calls; fotos already with the task force, & clean up starting. An adult was just arrested (yesterday) re: same tagging.

The fire with the multiple cars under the apartments 1st line should have been a 21/2 , not the interior line 11/2-13/4. That was a ton of heat attacking that structure. Roof video there is a great shot were they show the peak drop, and the guys moved down towards the ladder. A minute or so later the roof falls in. Those FFs never should have been up there after the initial venting.
