  • We were wanting to buy a #morrisminor but it went for far too much money, disappointed we did the classic auction silly mistake and bought a car with our heart and because we were in a car buying mood. Even though we have a mechanical genius in the household we didn’t tell him and carried on regardless! Stupid lesson learnt or got way with it? You decide 😂

So it was a cigar/cigarette lighter, I wasn't sure if it might have been a manual pump for the washers. Recently our next door neighbour had a flat tyre, I've got an electric compressor. The only problem was we couldn't find the 12 volt socket anywhere, she's only had the car a few months.. After consulting the handbook, we found it, it was located behind a flap in the centre console

When this car was built Vanden Plas was a high quality coach builder with its own factory. The car would have been built at the Morris Motors factory at Cowley, Oxford, then sent down to VP's coach works at Kingsbury, North London, where the interior would be fitted out. They used the same materials that would have been used in Rolls Royce and Bentleys, so this car is in effect a mini Rolls.

Er, no it's not. It's basically a basic 1100 with a larger engine and better trim. It's called badge engineering. Only in Britain was this done on a large scale. It contributed to the collapse of the car building industry.

I never thought I’d see someone in ecstasy over a Landcrab but all the best with it! We had heaps of them in New Zealand and I spent a lot of time fixing them. You need to keep the whole ignition system in tip-top shape cos the distributor, coil, leads and plugs are all in front of the engine. Rain gets all over them and any dust or excess resistance causes tracking (spark jumps to earth via some easier path before it gets to the plug gap) and the crab dies. But the have a lot of room for their overall size and handled well. Hope you have many happy miles in it!

That is a lot more unusual than a Minor, and, to me at least, a lot more desirable! As others have said, please keep an eye on the potential rust spots, especially underneath- there is a reason why the ADO16 range is now rare although they were Britain's best selling car for several years!

When I read "Princess" I thought it was one of those nasty wedge shaped things. However, your princess is a lovely ADO16 and very rare as an automatic.
My Gran had a white Austin 1300 and it was a lovely car. Most cars of the time (and some even into the 80's) had a rigid rear axle, giving quite a poor ride in the back. As a child I always preferred riding in the back of Gran's car rather than my parents MK1 Cavalier. I would have one now, but as I have to park in the street, I've opted for a moggie simply due to panel availability.
I hope you have many great adventures in your princess.

I had a standard 1300 without all the posh extras. It's a good car but make sure you get the brakes and steering checked over because an accident in any car without the hundreds of safety features that today's cars have would not be good. It will be MOT exempt but if I were you I would put it through one anyway, so you can then be sure it's safe. And use a garage that knows about classic cars, not one of your modern dealerships! Good luck, though, I think you'll have a lot of good times with it.

I wish i could get my 23 yr old daughter to be as enthusiastic with cars and the mechanical upkeep of them. I have owned my 1990 cossie since 1992. And told her if she shows a true interest in basic mechanic I'll sign it over to her, otherwise she'll have to
wait until my demise. Im still waiting ! Now seeing your enthusiasm, i know the chances are you'd be wearing overhall and getting your fingers dirty, asap. Like the other comment said, miles of smiles girl.👍

It is wonderful to see young people excited about classic cars while looking at the old systems through todays glasses.
The 'cupholder' was a place for your cup when stopped for a picnic.
The shock at it having an ashtray
No idea how to set an analogue clock
And the mysterious button that goes in and won't come out? A cigarette lighter. Or rather a cigar lighter if its a Van Den Plas...
And that auto was so clever in the 1100 / 1300 / Mini that it could bump start the car when towed which can't be done with autos normally.
Lovely cars in their day with stacks of room even the plain Austin 1100 my mum and dad had. When dad died mum kept the 1100 and I was given her white Mini 1000. The shape and sounds still bring a lump to my throat.
I hope the ladies have a ton of fun with this gem of a find. You did good ladies!

I will never hear Barry White's "Cant Get Enough of You Babe" ever again without thinking of this video.Great production, the drive to Pickering ,finding your new car, wondering what the dashboard control is, I think it is a cigarette lighter, push it in and it heats up, then it pops out and you remove it and light your ciggy, if you smoke, which everyone did when this car was built.
Loading it onto the van, your bro having a butchers underneath, then back home.

I sold these cars new back in the 70's and I rather liked them too. The only problem is that the auto gearboxes can be a bit of a pain. If I remember correctly they share the same oil as the engine - as do the manual cars. My advice would be an oil change every 3000 miles with a new oil filter every other change. Using a top quality semi synthetic oil is most important. Happy classic motoring !
