How to Put Your Volkswagen or Audi in Service Mode! Retracting the Electronic Parking Brake
Вставка

- The purpose of this video is to show you how I got this 2014 Audi A6 into rear brake service mode. There are a few options out there for talking with your car's ECU, the most widely known (and most intimidating) is VAG-COM.
I decided to go a different route for this brake service. I utilized an OBDeleven tool. It is a phone or tablet based app that allows you to scan your car for fault codes, change settings, display live gauges and much more. I needed it to retract the electronic parking brake (EPB) to be able to push the caliper piston far enough in to fit the new rotor and pads.
This tool works with Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini and and Seat. To see if your vehicle is supported, go to their website and input your vehicle information using the link below:

Dude no one watches these for editing just the directions
F u. I thought they were slick
I do
Man yt is amazing for those of us who like to do it ourselves. Saves so much money with a quick search.
dude thanks so much i struggled last time and ended up taking to dealership i could not understand why the piston didn’t push back
FYI, you need to pay 3 dollars in app for opening the caliper. Then 3 dollars for close it. Then another 3 dollars if you need to open it again. 😂
Nothing is truly free.
thanks for this info sir, appreciate it
You don't need the app. Apps are just to make it easier. But you should avoid using the apps. Apps are written as universal, they aren't car specific. Your car can be different than the one that the app was made for, and that can mess your car. And because you used an app, you don't know what the f the app did to your car. That's why you should do coding manually.
How to open calipers without app:
Go to Parking brake control unit > Basic settings > Channel 7 to open and after you change brake pads Channel 6 to close.
@@jauho7483hey man thanks for that. What I do know is exactly what you explained about apps but that's it. Do you know of any video showing this step by step? This my first time using obdeleven don't know what all those channels mean.
@@jauho7483you're the man, 🙏
I will never understand why people use all these apps to do this. The calipers can all be retracted safely and properly without this. There are many methods all over the internet, IE; I did this on a 2015 VW Tiguan and a 2018 VW Atlas both with electronic brakes.
Does the regular obd11 gadget work or do we need the Pro version ? Thanks.
Awesome tool. I have a 2012 audi q5. Had to replace the emergency brake control module. Can you program the new module with the software?
Hi. Which app did you use with your OBD tool ?
Thank you! I have obd 11 but every video said I needed vagcom and I was about to go buy one specifically for this!
You can also purchase a cheap plug in scan tool to disengage electronic parking brakes.
@@phill3583 A cheap scan tool will only scan for codes, it won't allow for maintenance things like this. An expensive VAG device will do it but you aren't going to get that for less than this OBD unit.
Did anyone notice he hit the door on the lift 🤦🏻♂️
Great chanel!
What software version did you need to do this. Is pro enough to get this done?
Great video! Is releasing the rear electronic brakes a feature available on the standard obd11 or only with the pro version?
You can do it with the standard edition
@@OrangeSpy121 can you still do it with Standard Version?
Once the piston goes into service mode, does it retract all the way and does the piston need to be pushed or screwed back.? Thanks
There are a few OBD 11 tools available I need for iPhone use . I’m not sure which one to purchase it’s for Audi A6 to release rear E brake
Do you know if i can, with obdeleven, to do the air gap calibration and the grinding-in of the EPB ?
I don't know. I will check next time I hook it up to the car.
did anyone try this without the help of the "app"? I believe the option is in "brakes/basic service/start lining service" and "end lining service"
Thanks for the video. I wished I knew this before servicing my rear pads. My piston is quite out at the moment and the manual winding tool just won't fit into the inside of the caliper. I managed to turn the piston to retract it a little
It is still 7cm extended and I can't turn it anymore. Do you think the scanner will retract it fully once I put it into service mode using the OBD scanner? Or have I wrecked my caliper? The rubber seal and piston are in very good condition.
The scanner will release the parking brake and make it easier for you to retract the pistons in the back. It sadly wont retract it automatically.
I just want to say, i have an 18 fusion with EPB as well and i did the same thing you did but it works fine (also thankfully i didnt need a scan tool to retract it) also for ford it retracts completely. Now on an 17 A3 it does not retract and i did it, got everything back in and out but now its giving me a control module fault?. Hope you got your caliper figured out, but again i did the same thing you did (given on a ford) and nothing happened
After I hit close I did not hear it close on the side I was working on and the parking break is flashing I tried cycling the ebrake like it said but it is still flashing I also tried the test function and reopening they both said failed.
Did you manage to solve it? Cause i‘m having the same issue
I have the same issue and when I had it at the mechanics they did their scan and it said that it was my module not responding. They told me it was my back right so I am going to replace both caliper and motor on mine
Great job on the editing
Thanks!
I bought the OBD11 scan tool, but it does not have the parking brake section in the apps menu. Do i need to upgrade to pro?
It's this working with Samsung galaxy s20 thank you
You can also use a 9V battery.
Do you have a video on how to do it with 9v battery?
@@khalidmahmood8466 No, but it is simple. Disconnect the electrical connection to the brake caliper and jump the caliper motor side with the 9V battery (attach wire leads onto battery). Touch the wire leads from the 9 V battery to the terminals that lead to the retractor motor and listen for its noise. You know the retractor motor is released when the motor noise stops and you can spin the rotor. Reversing the 9V battery leads onto the motor terminals will reverse the piston's direction (ie, open vs closed). You want the piston retraced in order to change the brake pads - ie, the rotor spins freely.
@@khalidmahmood8466 ua-cam.com/video/d14vya4_t_0/v-deo.html He uses a 12 volt source; the 9V battery will do it too.
Once you retract the motor, do you leave the ignition on and the OBD in until the piston is retracted, the pads are replaced and the caliper reinstalled? Is that why the battery needs to have a charger on it? Because if you are not working quickly, it could be drawing current for too long?
An hour is enough to drop the voltage below threshold, so keep the battery charged like with that jumper pack in the video. The tool is keeping the pistons back, and losing power would make them extend outwards again and you'll throw up EPB or ESC warning lights when you get the power back on. Definitely a bitch to do, but it's becoming more and more common as cable driven is the way of the past
You ever run into a “check ignition” error, amigo ?
So you don't need to do anything special for the front you can just change them?
Parking brakes on all cars are only on rear brakes.
I understand that in the apps you need credits, will we need to purchase the credits to retract and then reset the brakes with the obdeleven none pro version
Nope! I just my brakes with the non-pro and didnt use any credits
@@OrangeSpy121 what car do you have mate?

I have tried to use an OBDeleven today to wind back the electronic parking brake caliper pistons so I can replace the brake pads. For some reason, the piston does not fully retract or rewind enough to allow the new pads to be fitted. why is this?
It is my understanding that winding the EPB motor right back, either with a Scan Tool like OBD Eleven or direct 12 volt DC input (or manually), only winds back the mechanism inside the calliper and releases the pads from the rotor disk allowing removal of the callipers and old pads. This is a push and release mechanism only that does not physically retract the piston. You still need to push the pistons back into the callipers with a clamp or piston press tool. I have just replaced the rear brake pads on a 2008 A6 Quattro manually by disconnecting the 12V DC connection plugs to the brake motors, removing the motors from the callipers (2 Tx30 bolts) and winding the mechanism out (clockwise) by hand using a Tx40 or TX45 tool. There are UA-cam videos showing this method but be aware that you may, or more likely will, get Park Brake warnings and alarms until the EPB system has fully engaged the pistons with the motor mechanism. You need to disengage the Park Brake, turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting on the wheels. Great care needs to be taken to not drop the motors when you take them off the callipers. After reassembly, you also need to pump the brake pedal up hard before trying to engage the EPB. It will probably still take a few cycles of the EPB to get the system up hard with itself and satisfy the On-Board Diagnostics. Perform this procedure at your own risk.
Can I do this with an Innova obd2?
Where do i get an obd11
You can just connect the motor to a 12v battery that's even cheaper.
That's what I'm thinking. A simple wire jumper to the 2 pins, to any 12v battery. Like. I did it to some ruined ones before.
Ruined by a shop who took the motors off, fucked them, said it's good, took it 5 minutes home, had no brakes, all the brake fluid was gone...yeah nah
Can you do this with Obdeleven standard edition?
yes you can
My new OBD11 app does not list the parking brake service in the workshop section
Hi, thanks for the great video. My problem is that I get "failed" messages when I press on OPEN. I have found several videos showing how this is done and it works for everyone but not for me. I can connect fine, find my car, and use Apps to make changes, but this one results in the failed message. I am a PRO user and have credits. Any idea why this is happening? Obd11 support has been no help and a single entry in the forum has no response.
you figure out a solution mate?
@@TheJanope13 I contacted the manufacturer of my obd11 and they asked for a log file. After examining it they confirmed that they had a programming bug without any deadline or timeline to fix it. I ended up taking my car to a small shop and they replaced the rear brakes for $300. Dealer was asking for $900+ dollars.
@@hosrow As a mechanic I'm looking into similar scan tools, and it worries me to hear they have a bug like that. I would have to take apart the EPB the sketchy way, and I'm trying to not do that anymore lol
@@hosrow Currently facing the same issue. Car sitting on jacks and odbeleven says "can't write value". Nothing else. Ugggg
@@wsa3637any update?
You can do it manually as well..
Trying the break service on my 2016 Tiguan, already did the fronts. Can't get the back though. I have the OBD eleven pro with credits and all, got the battery hooked up to the charger. Still can not open the electronic parking brake with OBD eleven even though I follow the procedure exactly. Don't waste your money on this scan tool!
Check the website for compatibility. Your car isn't in the list.
There used to be ways to retract them the cheap way I forgot how also how's an electric parking brake stop you from taking out the caliper that sounds stupid. If the parking brake is off it shouldn't interfere with taking the caliper off? There used to be ways to retract them the cheap way I forgot how also how's an electric parking brake stop you from taking out the caliper that sounds stupid. Hey so I use the obdeleven to retract the piston but when “open” it actually is putting pressure on the disc so there is no spin. When putting “close” then you can rotate the disc. Is there js something I am missing?
I am not sure i know your issue there, but did you push back the piston after you did the "open" command? With the "open" command, you only set the electric park brake motor to service position, but you still need to push the brake piston back. After the pad change, you need to pump the brake pedal, to have the piston touch the new pads, and then use the "close" command. Did you find the issue there? Did i help, or did you find the error? Please let me know! Thanks :)
@@89Dave89 I was able to push back the piston and do the replacement. Thank you !
Hey did this work for you? As well as what vehicle did you do this on?

I don't think that's a VAG car...
@@JackLe1127they're motors. They get power and ground. Very simple
ua-cam.com/video/1JHhEHaOiDw/v-deo.html BEWARE as by mistake he said disengage and engage the parking brake but you should DISENGAGE before clicking OPEN.
You're killing me. It's called OBD 2 (II) not eleven! Lol. It stands for on board diagnostics generation 2.
dude google OBDEleven
The product he’s using is called obdeleven
If im not putting the drilled slotted rotor on standard width do i still need to disengage the electronic brake
if you are going to push the rear brake caliper in AT ALL you need to do this if you can fit your rotor and pads in without having to push the caliper at all you dont need to disengage
It would be impossible to remove the calliper with the emergency brake applied.
You’d think bluedriver scan tool would be able to service the brakes for 100$
Yeah, I just did rear brakes on a 2010 vw cc....just use a 12v power source, unplug connector, feed the motor, if it sounds like a thud, reverse the power n ground. Take the brake apart, push in caliper like a normal piston not twist style. When everything is installed, same thing, bring pistons out and squeezing the pads. NOTE: start with parking brake applied so when you're done it's the same. Worked a charm
And yet ford allows you to put the brakes in service mode from the driver's seat with no tools required.
Does the app and OBD 11 require WiFi connection to operate? My shop is not equipped with internet. Can the tablet and OBD communicate without WiFi and perform needed functions? Or will I need an internet connection?
Do you why my odbeleven is failing to retract rear EB even I hookup with battery charger as instructed?
You don't need WiFi to use it. The communication is via. Bluetooth
