The Curse of the FX90

  • The DOD FX90 delay effects pedal has a quirk that I've seen several people discuss but it's hard to describe so I thought I'd make a video demonstrating it. This 30+ year old analog delay has what I think is a destabilized timing circuit causing it to warble or detune/chorus. My guess is that after so long a timing cap is in the process of dying. If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know in the comments! Buyer beware on this vintage piece if kit.

This is a potentiometer issue, the delay time pot needs to be cleaned or replaced

Just a bad pot. Fixed my 18v Performer that way👍🏻

I have an FX90. Brilliant pedal! Inside there are trim pots, and it's possible to adjust these to achieve a longer-than-expected delay time, but at the expense of stability, leading to warbling. I suspect the pedal in this video just needs adjusting to reduce the maximum delay length until the warble goes away.

Any modern delay can do a straight delay; this thing is unique.

Right?! People pay big money for this sound! These FX90s can still be found under $100 all day so it seems silly to try and change parts on these to “fix” them. And this is coming from a big DOD collector who owns two FX90s

@@destroyerjazz I bought an fx90 never used still in the box for 70 bucks a couple years ago...it quickly replaced my deluxe memory boy, it's so much easier to dial in the sounds I want

I have this pedal also and is doing the warbly thing. I plan to open it and try some Deoxit on the pots, and then try adjusting the 2 trim pots on the circuit board.

I had a similar problem with my FX96 DOD Delay so I cracked the books on the circuit and learned that the BBD chipsets on that were designed to run at a higher voltage than 9 volts. So I rolled the dice and gambled with juicing my FX96 with 12 volts which solved the problem instantly. I've heard of other folks swapping out caps and even transistors to achieve similar results. I had to repair a burnt out diode on my FX90, so I'm no stranger to a soldering iron, but if there is an easier fix like using the 12 volt off my power supply instead then to me its a better solution as I hate burning my fingers with that iron. Keep in mind that it is still just a gamble to do what I did...

I have the same thing happen on my PDS2000, I'm positive it's a thing with the time potentiometer

Someone messed with the internal trimpots. You can adjust them by ear. Try it out.

Can hear the clock signal at max delay so someone has messed with it, bad electrolytic caps is always an issue with DOD pedals.

Remember it runs at 10v through the power outlet. I run mine via a 9v adapter or battery.

You need to move one of those trimm pots inside, I think the clock one, I got two of those because are amazing also very different between them

@@jjhams7023 deoxit in the pots helped and it doesn’t do it as severely. I haven’t messed with the internal trim pots and instead have decided to leave it in it’s current glitchy state. As some have pointed out there are tones of delay pedals out there but not many do that.

my FX 90 curse deals more with the extraneous noise (hum) it generates when put in an effects loop. In front of the amp it's very quiet but through the loop is another issue entirely. Has anyone else experienced this?

    • @OmicronTauKappaClassicDaddy
      @OmicronTauKappaClassicDaddy Рік тому

Yes, every time I used a power supply that wasn't isolated, especially with a modern switching type supply which is very common now days. Use a battery or if your battery connector is damaged then I would suggest that you find something akin to the Danelectro Billionaire Battery Box and try using that for power. If the battery solves your noise problem then you know straight away that your noise was from your power supply because batteries won't cause noise issues.

@@OmicronTauKappaClassicDaddy hi Greg...so what do you suggest for a power supply if I don't want to use the 9v battery (and want to use the AC adapter)? Do I just need to plug it in to a separate outlet than what the amp is plugged in to? thanks..
