  • The celebration on Saturn continues as Andrew Rosa takes a look back on the Video CD format, and the VCD movie card available for SEGA's 32-bit powerhouse.
    In addition, you'll get a brief glimpse at his VCD collection, as well as the Dreammovie VCD player for SEGA Dreamcast. If you've been wanting a "crash course" on the Video CD format and how it all works with our beloved Saturn, look no further.
    Want a VCD copy of My Life with SEGA: No Limits? Send an email to segabits@gmail.com with "no limits vcd" in the subject line, and a mailing address in the body. The VCD will ship the day after receiving a request. Unfortunately, I cannot provide a SEGA CD/Saturn case. It will be the disc with custom artwork in a nice paper sleeve, similar to Digital Picture titles.

    MaximumRD A.J. here - Thanks, man. I really appreciate it. The VCD format fascinates me for some reason, and - of course - I love Saturn. I think it would have been interesting had SEGA marketed the VCD card and select films here in the states, but I'm guessing it would have bombed like the PSP movie discs.

      Though I never collected VCD I like all tech, I did keep an eye on the format, from CDi to CD32, funny enough the VCD / MPEG module for the Commodore AMIGA CD32 console was actually directly compatible with the Phillips CD-i Digital Video CDs (at least on a hardware level if not directly fitting. I had heard it had something to do with Phillips earlier bad mouthing the CD32 in comparison to their multimedia
      wonder machine the "CD-i" lol) I forget the full details but the compatibility was basically Commodores way of snubbing Phillips. It was all inconsequential since Commodore went bankrupt anyway but I tell you something, of course this all being before DVD's, I was just fascinated with movies on optical discs, sure they did not hold a lot of data with movies sometimes consisting of multiple discs and sure the over all quality may not have been much better then say VHS BUT DAMN IT WAS VIDEO PLAYING OF A DISC ! Digital Video had arrived! Now, I was too poor back in the days anyway but one memory I have was walking into a small computer shop in Scarborough they actually had a CD32 on display (this was rare enough, Commodore / Amiga products were not exactly abundant here in Canada during the CD32 time) and they even had the VCD/ Mpeg module hooked up to it (they did not make a lot of these and they are rare a and pricey on Ebays these days) and of course they were playing a VCD title, it was Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home hooked up to a large rear projection TV. It was an impossibility for me back in those days but I have no doubt if I had the money I'd have bought the whole package right then and there thinking THIS was the future of movies lol.

      MaximumRD A.J. here - Holy shit! I was only aware of the Commodore 64 up until now. Had no idea they had released a 32-bit CD console. After reading up on it a bit I understand why. It's a real shame the CD32 didn't receive a US release because it sounds interesting. The setup you described reminds me very much of Incredible Universe. It was a gigantic electronics store that focused mainly on home video, gaming, PC and stereo sales. They used to have this huge game room where you could actually sit down in a nice comfy couch and try the new consoles. That was how I played Jaguar, CD-i and 3DO. Such a great place. It was later bought out by Fry's and went to shit from there.

      SEGAbits The Amiga CD32 actually did got released in a few selected areas only though, Well mostly Canada I've heard and it was thru a special mail-order you could import it from back in the day ;-)
      As for the VCD capabilities you listed that were on consoles you've listed, I'm surprised you'd haven't added Nintendo 64's CD64 backup unit (of course the reason being it was a unlicensed product from Hong Kong manufacturer Bing Enterprise i believe they were called) but it's cool tho and great video as always A.J Rosa! :-D

    • @SEGAbits
      @SEGAbits  10 років тому

      A.J. here - Imported, yes. Some stores imported and sold them, but the CD32 wasn't officially launched here.
      As for the CD64, I hadn't heard of it until your comment. LOL! I just did some research on it, because I was surprised it didn't come up when I was collecting info for this video. Come to find out, VCD playback wasn't available inititally according to "icequake.net". The AV outport is there, but the MPEG hadn't been developed yet.
      Do you have this unit? If so, how do you like it? Is it worth the hefty price-tag?

    You can get a bit more mileage out of the VCD card if you collect stuff like the Sega Partner's promotional Mogitate Sega Saturn discs or the multimedia "games" that feature cute girls, pop stars, idols and what not. It's not always a sure thing that they'll work with the VCD card, but since most of these discs are mainly just video, quite a few do take advantage of it.

      You don't have to restrict yourself to only playing officially supported Saturn games and legally official VCD releases. You can get an infinite mileage out of the VCD card by making your own VCDs with whatever video content you want on it. 😁 I make those as well as custom DVDs for people all the time with ANY video content they want on it.

    • @ThexthSurvivor
      @ThexthSurvivor Рік тому

      Those phased out quickly because the source videos that they used to make those VCDs were utter crap. If you use a video source that is of higher quality than a VCD, such as DVD or Bluray, to make a VCD disc, the video will look SOOOO much better. I can make VCDs that look almost as good a a DVD, which look much better than actual official VCDs released.

  • @PhirePhlame

    I've actually had a couple of DVD players with VCD support, it was always really neat! One was part of one of those TV/DVD combos, the other (which I think I still have somewhere but haven't unpacked yet) is just standalone. VLC's a nice way of playing these discs back, though.
    Also I was fortunate enough to find a burnable Dreamcast VCD player that _doesn't_ rely on external hardware.

I make high quality VCDs by sourcing HD content and giving the VCDs menus. Looks great, better than VHS, almost as good as DVD, but not as good as Bluray. It also sounds as good as a DVD and better than the audio quality of UA-cam.

    The US version of GunGriffon still has the MPEG video on the disk, but doesn't detect the card.
    I wish more games utilized this feature. VCDs are nice and all, and can be a nice conversation piece, but in this day and age they are quite pointless. My JVC card hasn't seen any use for over a decade now.
    Still - one of these days I'll have to track down all the games that use the MPEG card just because.

      SEGAbits GunGriffon wasn't great. It's a mission-based mech sim fairly typical for that period, though obviously simplified for the console controls. In a way it's a lot like a first-person Desert Strike.
      Your mech has a jump and a high-mobility mode - something like its feet turning into rollerskates, but I think this ability drains your fuel a lot faster and makes the mech handle more like a car.
      The graphics were mildly impressive for the time due to a clever mix of polygons and sprites, and even alpha effects. Once that wears of, though - the game becomes very monotonous.

      Make sure your VCD card is the same region as your Saturn. The Japanese VCD cards will work on Japanese and American Saturns (NTSC). The European VCD card will only work on European Saturns (PAL). If it still doesn't work, either the VCD card isn't seated properly, or the VCD disc is from a different region from your VCD card, or the VCD disc doesn't work, or the worst case scenario would be that the VCD card itself is faulty (hopefully that''s not the case).

    It was also popular in Europe mainly used by magazines many magazines for "free" and standalone for cartoons since they choul be played on every DVD and what's more they can even be recorded in MPEG-2 making it a DVD like but just the video had to be shorter (thus common usage for cartoons). I dunno about Asian VCDs but European ones always contained a windows player on the disc so that u could play them on your PC.
