I have played Legacy of Yu three times so far. Each one of those games ended up in defeat but was a super hard fought battle that kept me on the edge of my chair pulling my hair out. The flood, the barbarians, the story progression, the resource management, etc - all of it is just the best puzzle to wreck your brain over. Hands down my favorite solo game experience I've ever had. 10/10 for me.
I, too, agree with most of the commenters. I think that have played about 7 games so far. It is the rare game that I will play have played multiple times in a day. The campaign is very well executed with the subtle twists and turns. I am very impressed with how “non-samey” my sessions are, depending on which cards come out of the decks. Outstanding game!
I'm 5 games into the campaign, and so far, I've had 3 wins and 2 losses. This game is incredible. The game gets harder the more you win and easier the more you lose. The two losses were brutal and came in plays 3 and 4, but that made the win in game 5 all the more amazing. I can't imagine anyone beating the game in fewer than 10 games, and I think that's the way it should be. Shem Phillips has created what could be considered one of the best solo games of all time. I can't wait to keep playing through the campaign and probably begin another campaign after that. So much gameplay. So much to explore. Such an intricate and well-designed game. I'm in love!
Fantastic experience for me so far as well. I’m about 8 games in with at least a few to go, and I’m around the same rating for a lot of the same reasons. Flawless execution on top of a great game!
Definitely can agree with Mike when it comes to feeling like you are right on the edge. Played four games now. Won 2 and lost 2. In all the games, it came right down to the end with whether or not I would win or lose. Even with the two games I won, I always felt even early on that there was no way I was going to win this thing. Really loved that feeling of being pushed. Great game.
I received my copy a week ago and LOVED the clear insert idea and was surprised it hasnt been used more. After checking out your review Mike I definitely need to make it a point to get this one to the table now.
I liked my first few plays a lot but once I figured out a winning gameplay loop the game was pretty much unlosable unless I got really unlucky with the ordering of the early barbarians or townsfolk cards in my deck. So after losing two of my first four games I went on to win five consecutive very comfortably. I know there’s a promo card/variant rules to make it more difficult from the jump, but I have little desire to do that because the game became very procedural and repetitive after those first few plays. I'm still happy I backed it as it's a decent enough game and the way story elements/mechanics are added both during and between games is really well implemented. But I was pretty done with it halfway through the campaign and only played the last few games for the sake of completion.
I agree. The game can become a bit repetitive, especially once your engine is up and running. The campaign does add a bit of nuance, although the boons/handicaps can make the game a bit too easy or too difficult.
@@kevinb9675 Yeah, as mentioned, I'm still happy I backed it. And I made the original comment before selling it off for a slight profit so even happier! There are great solo games that do not suffer from this though (at least not to the same extent), such as Gloomhaven and Spirit Island, which I've collectively dumped probably 150 hours into and am still hooked.
@@ClaudiaRodriguez-yq1qx Well my first game took maybe 90 minutes but that was figuring out how it all works. Definitely looking forward to continuing playing that campaign!
I was very interested to hear what you thought about this one since I got to play it for the first time the other day. Agreed on all points, good sir! This game is stellar, top to bottom.
Grabbed this yesterday. Really nice components and art. Interesting puzzle. Nice size (I solo large Euros like Obsession and Feast For Odin, so it's nice to have a solo-only game you can set up so fast). And I love the fact that the campaign is fully resettable. I'll be sure to share this with my friends. The fact that the publisher encourages this (it even says so in the manual to lend it out!) is really nice.
Great review! I’ve played through two games so far, lost the first one horribly, and actually won my second play through. Agree with everything you said about the game and it’s replayability. From what I’ve seen so far, the story deck and book do lend themselves to a potential expansion down the line, potentially as a different campaign story from the original. The only thing that makes me think that Garphill is unlikely to release an expansion is that they haven’t made one for either of their other Ancient Anthology games, at least to date. Still, I don’t think I’ll have to worry about running out of new stuff in this game for awhile. Thanks for the review!
Audio in beginning and end needs work...seems like a camera room mic was picking you up, not the one on your shirt . Audio in the how to play portion was fine.
I’m still working on the studio. The sound is coming from the mic, but depending on the direction I’m facing in the room it’s picking up more or less echo.
I’m really tempted to get this solo game. I keep threatening to play solo plays but only do so occasion. Too many other distractions I guess. The game mechanics, theme etc. seem very intriguing to me. It’s quite an expensive game at this time, so deciding if I should take the plunge.
Question here. You said something about the box and I saw that insert in another video. It looked great! But.. I realized I pre-ordered this game with a different cover. There it says: 'Renegade studios'. I wonder if that box has the same insert. Do you know anything about that? Or anybody who reads that?
Hadrian's. It can be played mutlplayer and Hadrians' online campaign necessitates you playing the game differently, whereas this one gets repetitive once you "solve" it.
I played this game once and barely won the first round. Then i realised i played it wrong the whole time. I never bribed the barbarians and took the resources from both the brown and red backgrounds when I dismissed townfolks from the top. Then i realised this game is challenging. 😂
I think a 9 is too high. After 4 plays the game is predictable and the choices are actually very few. It's fun for a little bit, then it gets repetitive. I'd rate this game a 6 or 7
Just can't justify the purchase for a solo only essentially one playthrough game. Sure resettable and can do it again. But the motivation to do so would hit the floor after the conclusion of the first one. Played this post testing on TTS. Didn't do enough for me. Also based on previous videos with Mike. As soon as it was a solo game from garphil games he was giving it a 8-10/10.
"Solo Only Campaign Game" I see Mr. DiLisio is trying to set a new world record speedrun in my "Excitement to Disappointment" category. Art looks amazing, at least.
While I understand the point, especially as I’m also rapidly burning out on campaign games, this is a campaign done right. Not too long. Very easy to set up, save, tear down. Re-settable.

Great review Mike, looking forward to receiving this, artwork + theme was a no brainier.

I keep hearing this. Bummer as a fan of Garphill!
A lot of solo only games suffer from this though so the question is did you get value for money enjoyment before you hit that point?

I've only played 1 game of this so far, and already love it!! Lost horribly, but I'm glad about that, actually. Glad to hear you enjoy it as well!
Hi! how many hours took you to finish the game? would you play it again?
@@ClaudiaRodriguez-yq1qx Well my first game took maybe 90 minutes but that was figuring out how it all works. Definitely looking forward to continuing playing that campaign!
Once you know the game after a play or two you can definitely get a game including setup and tear down in less then 90 minutes.
Great review Mike!
Love Mike so much!
Awesome review from a National Treasure.

Really been enjoying this one. Glad to see I’m not the only one :)
Thanks, Mike!!
Look forward to trying this!
100% agree with every point. This is an incredible solo experience
It goes on my wish list! ❤️❤️❤️
Nice Garphill product placement:)
I've been really enjoying it! Such a good solo game
Low audio, turn on the mike, Mike 😊

Hadrian's Wall or This?

@@draheim90 Well Hadrian's is arriving tomorrow in the mail. Will get it a go this weekend.
Why not get both?
Got my copy just a few days ago!
I think it's a decent game. I plan on finishing the campaign, but probably won't be playing it after that.
Dice tower Midwest annex? It has a name ?😂 This game is an auto-buy for me.
I will put this on my maybe list then, I see it listed as coming in July here so I guess it depends a bit on price.
I'm not surprised by the high praise. Garphill has just been solid.
Enjoyed my first 3 plays of this one! A close win, a quick loss, and slightly less close win.
The overview still works whether Mike is saying You or Yu.
"another thing that Yu can do.."
Where can I find the game? I see it only on pre-order on the usual sites. I'm guessing people are talking about the Kickstarter version?

Can we get Dilisio a mic? It's 2024, ya'll. It sounds like a 2005 UA-cam video! Ha.
Yu:
May I help you?
Carter:
We'll be askin' the questions, old man. Who are you?
Yu:
Yu.
Carter:
No, not me, you.
Yu:
Yes, I am Yu.
I think a 9 is too high. After 4 plays the game is predictable and the choices are actually very few. It's fun for a little bit, then it gets repetitive. I'd rate this game a 6 or 7
Looks like raiders of scythia
Same artist (Shem's brother, Sam Phillips) but the gameplay is quite different to Raiders.
Miss you Mike 😢

Indeed - I'm done with un-necessary campaigns in Euro games.
While I understand the point, especially as I’m also rapidly burning out on campaign games, this is a campaign done right. Not too long. Very easy to set up, save, tear down. Re-settable.
@@michaeldilisio557 not being long is a benefit. Time is just too precious to commit to a lot of games with extended length campaigns.
I love a good solo campaign!
Yu isn’t pronounced as you. There’s no way a foreigner would be able to pronounce it correctly.
If a foreigner spent 8 years learning and went to language school for Mandarin would they be able to?
I just pronounce it "up yours"
