Daggers become symbol of status in Yemen

- When you visit Yemen for the first time you might be surprised by all the people wearing curved daggers.. But the curved metal blades are not necessarily for fighting. Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Sanaa.
As an amateur American cutlery collector...I always liked this particular knife (dagger.) I have modestly priced Japanese Tanto, Bowie's, etc...To bad there aren't very many worthy production made pieces....

These daggers are made of rhino horns and are the reason there are only a few thousand rhinos today. Yemen people pay thousands for poachers in South Africa to make rhinos extinct so they can have fancy knives witch are not used at all except for ceremony’s and showing people how cool they are because they can make animals on the edge of extinction.
Don't worry there's alot of Yemeni people inside Yemen against that killing rhinos for janbia it's actually became rare and expensive

Usually made from rhyno horn or ivory with a hand made stainless steel blade. Silver or gold belt with one or two ancient himyarite gold coins that sometimes date back 2000 years.

I think most of it is going to the Chinese market.
Those horns are bought from the Chinese markets they do all the slaying and in comparison to these daggers many more Chinese "oriental" doctors buy those horns to grind them up to use as an ingredient for medecine/spiritual healing pills or paste

eric Graccus Originally these daggers were placed on the side of the waist and not in front of the stomach but this way has because more popular in the past 100 years or more. Now we don't wear them to fight it's just for looks I remember when my family taught me if I ever pull out my dagger I would be called a coward and people won't respect me.
