A wonderful song, composed by Vernon Duke with lyrics by E.H. Harburg (1932), for the Broadway musical "Walk A Little Faster". Composer Alec Wilder writes " .... This is a perfect theater song... perfectly wonderful".
Only available in rare Quadraphonic LP, "Johnny Mathis In Person: Performance Live in Las Vegas " (1972). I hope this album makes its way to CD form someday soon. It is a treasure trove of beautiful ballads, upbeat rhythms and the longest medley I've ever heard of Johnny's many, many hits.
Please enjoy this yet one more outstanding experience of Johnny's voice and heart.

It was love at first audition !
Since then I have considered him the greatest singer of all times ever !

This song originally appeared on the album "Johnny's Mood." I love hearing this live version--the first time I've heard it (especially because they have a full orchestra, and they are taking it at such a lovely, leisurely tempo, and I love the nuances and emotion that Johnny brings to it); the original recording is also one of my favorites (of favorites), and it has been so nice to be "introduced" to this version. Thanks, Lenore for posting this, full of wondrous photos that do lend to the illusion of it being a live video, as someone wrote below.
you're weclome, Sherrie- i love this song- i think there is a live performance of it on YT but this is from the LP- from a 1970's Vegas peformance- i wonder if it's included in the new boxed set- it was never released in DVD. Enjoy:)
Yes, I saw it in the list of albums in the boxed set! The live performance of it on YT is from The Tonight Show. It featured the great Tonight Show band, but this version is much better (although the TS presentation was certainly wonderful) because the TS band featured a lot of brass and no strings---and this arrangement and presentation cries out for an orchestra with many stringed instruments along with the brass and woodwinds. That's why this is such a successful performance, besides what Johnny does with it. They made several interesting changes (like change of key near the end) which is a creative treat, because it expands on the original recording in wondrous ways. Johnny's voice has a remarkable way of "balancing" and combining with the sound of a full orchestra, something that few voices can do so excellently and dramatically.
There has never been an entertainer who has brought out feeling so intense to his voice. Love this song and love JM . Thanks
Thank you lenore for your response. There are certain songs that are unavailable on cd so I was so desparate that I resorted to buying vinyl and had to purchase a record player to play them. I will go to any lengths to hear JM. I love the video you put together, it's lovely.
