      @@joesheppard5960 that and the fact that the FDA also allow harmful stuff into public consumption which is banned in other countries, especially in candies. Our stuff isn't a huge amount less sweet than before just because of sugar tax either. There's always lots of local healthy eating campaigns across the UK and because we're a small country, the manufacturers can't help but react to that too.

      I think is more to do with both the different National tastes and because the US pumps everyng with High Frucrose corn syrup and the UK is more likely to use pure Sugar. Indeed the use of artificial thing in UK food is frowned upon.

      haha marmite is the marmite of our confectionary! I get what you mean though, I personally love Turkish delight, even the fry's one gives me a crazy hit of nostalgia from when my grandmother used to give me one every time I left her house. very floral flavour and the fry's one obviously isn't the best quality so I can understand why people wouldn't like it apparently some people think it tastes of soap. I was more amazed that all of the mums liked the fruit salad sweets, I always assumed it was one of those very English flavours that most other places would hate. nothing like a tin of tizer or lilt and a packet of fruit salads of the way home from school as a kid though.

      I only heard of Turkish delight from a 3rd grade teacher who read the Chronicles of Narnia to us every day after lunch. I didn't think it was a real food, so my brain was coming up with a real fantasy of it - maybe it tastes like bubble gum or clouds, or creamy like milk candies. Now there is a chain in the US called World Market where they sell mostly imported goods. I happened upon a beautiful box of Turkish delight there, and I was initially so excited to take it home and scarf it all like Edmund did, since it must be that good. Sorry to say that I was let down by the rosy flavor and very powdery-gummy texture. 😅 I was a kid though, expecting something sweet and fruity in most of my colorful snacks. I'll probably hunt down a box again and see how it is as an adult, since I really enjoy botanical flavors now.

    • @corintibbetts-harlow8021
      @corintibbetts-harlow8021 Рік тому +13

      It's not to do with artificial colours and flavours, plenty of UK food uses those, but its down to two big things probably; different laws on the formulation of chocolate and the use of high fructose corn syrup. Chocolate in the US doesn't need to include nearly as high a percentage of cacao, so the resulting chocolate is much sweeter as sugar makes up a higher proportion of the product. The US also frequently uses HFCS as a sweetener in place of sugar in a wide range of things like sweets, fizzy drinks etc. This is for political and economic reasons; the government offers huge subsidies that encourage US based farmers to grow corn (the reason for this is the enormous lobbying power of the agricultural industry on local and federal politics), which makes it much cheaper to use the corn derived HFCS instead of sugar.

    • @TheLSDiva
      @TheLSDiva Рік тому +6

      @@VirtuReality360 There are quite a few artificial ingredients that are permitted, but a lot of our sweets like to take pride in and advertise the fact that they have neither. For a long time we never had light blue smarties because of the colouring having adverse effects on kids' attention and hyperactivity- I don't recall if that colouring was outright banned or just dropped out of use. I know one colouring we used to banned, but technically don't anymore after Brexit is called "Titanium Dioxide". It's commonly used in the US as both a food and *paint* colouring...

    The Jelly-Babies had a special release for the 75th anniversary, they were called Jelly-atrics. Back in the early 90's Smarties caused a furore with the introduction of the blue Smartie as it was blamed for causing hyperactivity in some children. Wine Gums were invented by a Temperance man who wanted a sweet that could have nuanced flavour like wines, no alcohol was ever involved with the recipe. Australian Maltesers are sweeter than UK Maltesers. Mars bars don't contain caramel, it is some vegan concoction so by default it can't be caramel. @@petcheetahh hello, please don't apologise, I thought I was being helpful. A lot of the time we use the brand names but generally candy makes us think of candy canes hanging on a Christmas tree. If you want chocolate you would specify whether you want a bar of chocolate for baking or something but if you're after a twix or Mars for example, you would just say the name. We generally say "sweets" but I think this can ambiguous, skittles are considered as sweets but they're sweet and sour flavoured but then another type of sweet is jelly beans which are again different but sweets, it depends whether they're sugar or chocolate based, sorry this is long lol! Whatever flavour, you're after, we'll have it. Whether it's milky chocolate or dark chocolate, filled with caramel, nuts and marshmallows or just plain (which for some reason plain chocolate is known as dark chocolate, no idea why!) or if you biscuits which Americans refer to as cookies, we have them. We have twinkies too and other hostess brand stuff too but I don't if hugely popular, I have tried them and they a horrendous chemical taste and it's really off putting. I have seen videos where people try our various snacks and it's strange to see them being that way, like the Turkish delight bar in this video, you bite in to it, turkish delight is thick and you would never tear it. Also, our chocolate is not as strong apparently, I have heard many people say American chocolate is revolting.

    Greetings you wonderful people, from the UK!
    What this video should explain is that for the candies (we call them sweets), they all use natural flavours. Here in the UK there's a big drive to reduce artificial flavourings from food, especially those aimed primarily at children.
    I think these ladies might like to try our savoury foods. Let's hear it for Marmite, heaven!

Usually on videos like this, it's weird things that no-one actually buys, but these are in fact our everyday sweets, so well done mamah channel! Terry's chocolate was sold to Mondelez who immediately closed the York factory where they originate and shipped production to eastern Europe. They bought Cadbury in a hostile take over and tried to do the same. THey did ship a lot of production to Poland but were unable to close the World HQ and home of Cadbury in Birmingham England due to a clause they weren't aware of. So they invested a lot of momey in Birminghan. Never trust American businesses. Smarties are now made in Germany and owned by Nestle. So another English sweet sold out. Maltesers are American owned but originate from England.
