I wish I would be able to find a good doctor that doesnt call me hypochondroac and helps instead of ignorance the suffering!!
Great video. Simple explanation. Thank you for not playing music in the background. I suffer from meralgia paresthetica. My doctor overdiagnosed it as a spine problem. Luckily I came across knowledgeable chiropractor, who worked on that nerve. With exercises and swimming plus chiropractor visits I feel great improvement. Still not 100% though. It is very important that this is annoying condition, but it's not leading to a wheelchair. Thank you Doctor. You're great. I've subscribed to your channel.
Fifteen years ago I was able to self diagnose based on Internet searching (when the Internet was still relatively new). There was only a blurb on the Mayo Clinic website giving the symptoms and name, no treatment except surgery in severe cases. But it was never more than an annoyance until 2 years ago when it evolved into severe burning waking me several times a month, especially when I woke lying on my back. ANY muscle movement was unbelievable pain and some days my skin was so hot from the burning. It progressed to the point I developed insomnia because I was afraid to wake in pain and I needed an electric scooter at the grocery store. I again searched the Internet and to my surprise found many more entries on the condition, including UA-cam videos showing stretches and treatments. The stretches worked!!! Some better than others for me. It's been a few months since I felt any pain until tonight so was looking up those stretches to do before bed and found your informative video, the most recent I've ever seen. Thank you for validating this condition and keeping the info current. I'll check to see if you have one for stretches or use one of the others on here.
I need to look for those exercises

Good evening Andrea Furlon. I appreciate your immense knowledge about pain and its causes. We need doctors like you all over the world and especially in India. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I had this pain a few months ago and it went off by itself. I was worried like hell. You relieved me of the anxiety. Thank you. Wish you a very happy new year.

Very nicely explained.. thank you doctor
Glad to have a name to go with the condition. Good lecture.
Thanks for watching
You do a great job explaining!
You are welcome
Happy new Dr.Furlan great information listening to your program
Same to you!
Thank you for this informative video, Dr. Furlan. I can confirm that some doctors don't seem to know about this condition. I went to a doctor about it who appeared clueless about the lateral femoral nerve. I believe mine originated from a hip injury I suffered while cleaning the floor. I went to PT, which I think helped quite a bit, and also rolfing. I've watched some youtube videos on exercises for this condition and they are very helpful as well.
Nice explanation thanks a lot ...
Thanks for your pod cast as I am suffering this condition right now from my waist line down both tights. I move about holding onto walls and furniture. I will watch your next episode for treatment and management.

Thank you for the helpful information. Both of my thighs are numb, burn and I often have electric shooting sensation on both sides. I've recently had a double mastectomy and can not lie on my sides or stomach. Will lying on my back worsen my condition. I've tried a wedge pillow to elevate my legs, but it definitely makes it worse.
Thank you for being an open minded doctor.
Very helpful ! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank-you for this video. I have had this symptom for a year and is frustrating and at times debilitating. I do the stretching and exercises. I really believe weight and diet play a part in making it worse for me. Thanks again.
20 years have been going through this now its to the point where standing or walking longer than 5 minutes is so painful i want to cry. been to all kinds of doctors and had all kinds of injections and tests done and nobody has been able to help me, only relief i can find is sitting in a chair 90 % of the day i'm only 49 years old and i cant hardly do anything for the pain i'm in over it, it stared as just numbness and some burning 20 years ago now its Honorable pain after 5 minutes of standing or walking, been to 5 different doctors and surgents nobody has been able to help me,
Why couldn’t surgeons help you? The nerve can be disconnected surgically

Hi Rhonda, Happy new year to you too.
Thanks very much. This started on me about 3-4 weeks ago and I've been doing all these stretches on YT but not thinking of source.. and now it makes sense. My weight gain around belly has me wearing pants/belt etc way tighter now and I sit a LOT so it's making sense that could be part of the issue.. I'm seeing my doctor this Thursday to also discuss further & overall health. much thanks for this educational video Dr Andrea. 🙂

Thank you Dr Furlan for the diagnosis! Yes I've experienced this very condition periodically and will take your advice. It's alarming, it awakes me with painful numbness in the very area described. I'm overweight in the lower waist area and use a tight 36" belt size. Sit for hours be at the computer and ride the bus for an hour each be day! So glad you have the cure! I'm relieved 😅 ! Same. I woke up thinking someone was stabbing me! That's how much it hurts. Every time I lay down my right thing burns and gets numb... It is debilitating.
Hello Doctor! What if these symptoms become an issue only immediately after having an emergency an L3-L-4 fusion?

Thank you so much! I did have a CT scan of the lumbar spine and it shows servere left neural exit foraminal narrowing. The GP thinks it's from that. But I told him, no, I don't get pain in the back leg, and the pain does not extend past the knee. It is only in the thigh, and only on the front and outside. I wonder if an MRI would show if the Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve is compressed? I have been so sad since I had the CT scan, and the result, but I don't think my thigh pain is coming from that.
Hi Dr, thank you for great info - Can this pain also feel like my thigh is buckling or about to collapse?

Hello, I just came back from a long distance walk witch I canceled. During the nights it was gone, after a few kilometers it appeared again. 5 days (125km) of ignoring or observing the numbness and pain, I stopped the whole trip.
A long night rest was very good, I still have a bit of symptoms. I am going to continue with a few exercises I found online and hope its getting better soon.
Thank you for your amazing explaination.

I started having this. Irritating as heck. Feels like a torch being held in that area, with the tingling, pins & needles all at the same time. Flares up after sitting too long. Different then the Sciatica I've had for 20 years. Sciatica usually is more in the back of the leg. Thanks for sharing Doctor. Happy New Years.

I think this is what I have after I broke my right hip and had to have a replacement. The surgery went fine and really know pain at the incisions but I have horrible, debilitating pain in my thigh why I walk. It feels like burning pain at a certain point when I walk. It’s ok when I sit and lay only when I walk. Do you think this may be what I have? Thanks
TART CHERRY JUICE: I read about tart cherry juice in a research report - as bizarre as it sounds. . Lyrica (the medication) only helped partially. The cherry juice really helped. The research said research participants felt the difference after 2 weeks. Its day 7 and I have felt the difference for a few days. It requires half a glass twice a day according to research. If I forget to take it though, the pain comes back. And I found that taking a little more than half a glass twice a day helps even more.
Where do you get tart cherry juice?

I am 31 years old and still have to work for another 30 years.. I am a construction worker, what do you recommend?
Esta condição, também pode estar associado a problemas da coluna? Obrigado desde Portugal
Sim, o meu problema é devido a coluna. Pensei que fosse a meralgia parestésica mas o teste deu negativo
No meu caso é o nervo comprimido na parte lumbar que causa esse sintoma no minha coxa.
I was literally just diagnosed with this yesterday
Annoying is an understatement, I have lived with this condition for over 30 years, misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia, I’m 5’2” and 128 pounds, and never wear tight clothes, I also get simultaneous back pain with the pain in my thigh. My life has been ruined from this debilitating condition.

Look into ART or adhesion specialists for entrapped nerve.
I have the same condition. I am looking into getting the peripheral nerve removed. This pain is the worst to experience. Some days not so bad but it is always lingering. I hope people never experience this type of pain.
Happy New Year!! I have this burning that travels thru different parts of m6 legs. Usually the left leg it started in my shin area and has climbed up to my inner thigh area. I have no idea why but it is painful enough to keep me up at nite sometimes. I usually rub it vigorously and then try to ignore it. I have multiple Sclerosis and have assumed it's directly related to that. 🤷🏾
Same to you!
I have small fiber neuropathy diagnosed by skin biopsy. Is meralgia paresthetica related?
I am experiencing tingling on the inner thigh. Can you address this as well? Is it the same nerve or caused by another nerve. Thank you...
Happy fabulous new year wishes dr andrea .great list of new goals of yours ahead ... meralgia parasthetica is a entrapment neuropathy ...lateral femoral cutaneous nerve entrapment. Good educational video on causes diagnostic tests and treatment options . One more thing as a physiotherapist there are few test pelvic compression test is a golden standard test evidence based 95 percent sensitivity and specificity to confirm meralgia ... and neurodyanamic tests revealed by David and lorimer to confirm it and some evidence based exercises plays a key role to alleviate the problem ....sometimes local pricks nerve blocks ...useful .....and topical medicine as dr andrea suggested useful .amazing video on 2023 .keep educating as dr awaiting for your new book on chronic pain .need to read .please ...

I have pain in this exact area but instead of numbness its very sensitive to touch. I don't understand if Allodynia is the same nerv being compressed just giving different symptoms or is allodynia something else completely?
I was diagnosed with meralgia paresthetica over 2 years ago after one evening while washing dishes feeling a sensation of ice water running down my right thigh. Over time I feel this from time to time when I’m doing something while standing. Sometimes it feels like fire. But always my skin feels mostly numb on the surface.

Thank you for sharing this informative video; I found the content quite engaging. I have a question regarding a personal concern. As a kickboxer, I often experience significant pain in my thigh area when someone kicks me. Could you please offer some advice on how to manage this discomfort effectively?
I have many videos in my channel about neuropathic pain.
I'm 75 and a martial artist, as well, for over 50 years. I have scoliosis and was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. I've had non-diabetic foot/ankle neuropathy for over a decade. I had a L4, L5, S1 Fusion 18 months ago. It was doing ok until about two months ago whien I put on weight ,and developed intense thigh pain. My spine surgeon took an x-ray of my pelvic area and hips and told me my right hip may need to be replaced (the right thigh is where I get the majority of my pain. Don't know if that's just a coincidence.) I also had an MRI done which showed compression of the space between the L3 nerve. I'm hoping I won't need any fusion of that lumbar area.
Besides the spine fusion in 2023, I had my left hip replaced in 2020. Also had bilateral knee replacements in 2015. I've recently lost 15 pounds (have another 10 to go.) I had an epidural last week for my thigh pain. I had no pain for about a day afterwards. I went to the gym and did 30 minutes on the recumbent bike. Perhaps, in retrospect, I should have rested or gone easier. My pain returned the next day. While it's a little better, in that it's mostly down only my right thigh, it still hurts a lot. I'm also getting pain across my back at the waistband.
The infomation is the video is helpful and I'd appreciate any other suggestions you have.
I'm a bit mifted at my doctor for not telling me to take it easy on my first day after the epidural. I had twilight sedation and after the procedure I did not see him again, and didn't get to ask him some followup questions.
Is it ok to resume a strenous stationary bike workout now, 5 days after the epidural, or should I wait some more? I really want to shed these last 10 pounds, ASAP! I think that would help my pain. Any other suggestions you have will be welcomed. I plan to watch more of your videos. Thanks!
Por favor quem tem neuropatia pode fazer exercícios?
Thank you so much for this video. I am 73 yr. old woman who, at the age of 41, had compressed disks at L4, L5, and S1, with the L5 suffering a serious herniation, aka “a blow out!” It impinged on my sciatic nerve, causing severe pain. I was unable to lift my right foot more than an inch and could not walk upright for 7 months. (I had a terrible doctor at the time) I ended up having surgery; but, the surgeon told me that by the time he opened me up, the disk matter had been reabsorbed and the sciatic nerve was permanently damaged. I’ve had a lot of problems since then, including being diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 5 years after this happened. I have had this problem with the outer thighs of both legs since the back issue. The right is so damaged that once I slapped on the electro-pad of my T.E.N.S. Unit and cranked the Unit up as high as it would go. I felt absolutely nothing! I did not leave it on long, but it really showed me how deep the problem is. I’ve been taking a low dose of Gabapentin for many years for the strange ache and all the other symptoms you mentioned, though now the doctors want to take me off of it. My left thigh 6:11 does not get the strange, annoying, and sometimes painful symptoms as the right, but it is ultra-sensitive to touch, and, like the right side, doesn’t feel heat and cold. I’ve never been told what this is caused or what causes it. I may go ahead and try to get off the Gabapentin as my doctor (new, good doctor!) wants me to do. Giving this condition a name and some tactics to ease it has given me a boost of confidence! Again, thank you, and a very Happy New Year to you from me!

The stretches did help for me and using a rowing machine also helped but it didn't disappear completely until I started using a Stairmaster Stepmill within a week of using this machine my numbness went away. I guess it stretches the nerve and relieves the compression, anyway I struggled with it for few months and now it's gone.
In my case pain started in my left hip bone area. From there it continued down the outside of my thing to the knee and bellow to my foot. This pain is not constant. I only feel it if I move in certain ways, or if I press against my thigh. I also don't have knee jerk reflex. I can not push up off the floor from squatting position using my left leg. I have to use my right leg. I have seen army of doctors and specialists. Had X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, EMGs, etc...over 150 different types of blood work, and no diagnosis. They wound I have axonal nerve damage in left leg, but no explanation of the cause.
I had this during pregnancy. Very, very bothersome but completely resolved after.
Thanks for sharing Lindsey. Happy New Year!

Is there a similar condition related to hormones? I have burning leg pain that sometimes makes me nauseous right before my period. This is the closest thing I condition I have learned about but no drs have ever been able to tell me why I have this pain. It doesn’t happen every month but it happens more often than not and all I can describe it as is a burning pain sometimes in the inner thigh sometimes the outer thigh and also a crawling sensation. Happening for more than 10 years. When I was younger the sensation felt more like my circulation being cut off but now it’s more of a burning pain.

Interesting - but what if the nerve sensation occurs on the side of the butt? Happens when I bend down just before sitting on the wc.
A "glitch" along 20 cm very narrow path.
What's name for that?
So I’ve got this burning sensation since 3 days ago. It doesn’t hurt at all. No swelling no discolor. but I do feel it couple of times a day. Is it the same thing?

I've been suffering with what I think is meralgia paresthetica for almost 10 years. All because I decided doing squats while brushing my teeth was a good idea and snap my thigh went.
Dear Doctor i just feel burning in my left leg under the knee. I don't know why and i was so surprised how's possible burning sensation
Hi Raheela. Burning sensation below the knee is not meralgia paresthetica. Please talk to your doctor about it.
Dr.Furlan what is Meralgia Paresthetica?
Hi Jaya, I answer this question in this video.
1:53 Ah that would make sense, so me pinching or compressing the nerve on my left thigh would also cause pain in my right thigh hip bone area
Does this get wirse in night and after lying? Does this pain make it difficult to walk ?
It depends on the condition and what is the cause of the problem. Please show this video to your doctor and ask if this is your condition or not.
Me I feel as if it is a phone vibrating in my both front thighs especially when I move or place my hands or any weight there. It's painless though
Thanks for sharing.

I'm sorry to hear that Robbie. I hope you get better.
I thought I was going to type in my symptoms on Google and get stupid crap but was surprised when I seen it described perfectly and that there was actually something named for it, mine started while laying down at night started lightly being pins and needles to a month later burning pain , I'm not over weight or wear tight belts etc so idk what's causing it but it's no fun

My upper right thigh has been doing this for like a week especially at night ... Its painful and annoying it feels tingly and also like stings a bit and it gets numb 😩
Same, for a few weeks now. The worst part is the shooting pain if I move too fast or the wrong way. Kept waking up last night. Hope it goes away soon!
Mine just numb but it’s just started when I press down on my hip
@@froggygurl8775 what did you do for it? My mum has it and ia suffering so much
I only feel it in my right Calf. Is it still Meralgia Paresthetica or something else?
Meralgia paresthetica is only in the thigh. If it affects the calf then, it is not meralgia paresthetica.
Mine is extremely itchy and itchy. But the itching is intense I run my thighs under hot water to itchy and relive the itch.
