Landscape Focal Point… Why and Where!
    Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This BobBlast started off as a question I received - "Can you do a BobBlast about finding a FOCAL POINT in a Landscape?" Great question!
So I decided to look at the horizon line in a landscape and answer this question in this week's BobBlast.
For me, a focal point is the reason why I'm doing a painting in the first place. The focal point could be a red barn on a green field; a single boat on a lake or even a bright spot in a distant tree line.
The focal point is the part of the painting that attracts attention… it's the one spot the eye will stop to focus on first. Sometimes it is very obvious! When you look at the above painting, you know that the boat is the focal point. It is where the eye comes to rest.
When establishing the focal point, I use the Golden Section composition to find the aesthetically pleasing location - that perfect spot! It will either be the lower 1/3 left side - or the right side... or, it will be either the upper 1/3 left side or right side. Wherever you position your focal point, make certain it's only in ONE spot. Reason: You want the eye to go there and rest.
Practice these warm-ups - in the demo I worked on four - 10x10 inch watercolor paper - A perfect way to start! Then you will be SPOT ON!

Bob- I’ve got a huge landscape coming up due by end of summer. It’s
August already! I have a few preliminaries, and today I’ll make some decisions, premix some colors, keep in mind your reminders of focal point AND….paint with paper towels. Perfect timing. THANKS!!

Wow what a great lesson Bob. So simple but so effective. I will look at my recent work and work on their focal point.

Thank you Jen. Whenever I paint - I am ALWAYS reestablishing the focal point. Or the contrast! Never-ending!

I wish you'd make a longer video of a painting from start to finish, to see your process. I feel like it would be really enjoyable and informative to watch.

Hi Dani - these BobBlasts are designed to be short "blasts" - of a technique, product, etc. I also do a 90-minute Monthly Demo and Online Workshops. If you are interested in longer views and/or workshop settings, go to my website. These are not free, like the BobBlasts are - but they may be what you are looking for. Thanks for writing.
