    First time I've ever seen someone besides me chop large rounds of fire wood using the weight of the heavier firewood itself to drive the hatchet through the wood ! Works really well for stubborn knotty pieces and an axe too. A well made hammock, 5' wide so you can sleep on your side, gathered end hammocks are the most comfortable and stable sleep I've ever had ! It feels like floating in air ! A foam pad is necessary between your sleeping bag and hammock to retain your heat. It takes away the heat escaping between you and the hammock otherwise hammocks are cold at night even with a subzero sleeping bag. I like to hang my clothes on the top line of the hammock so I can put my clothes on including my shoes and step down from my hammock fully clothed ! I slept in a hammock every night for a week when I first got mine and a threw out my bed and haven't slept in a bed since !

There are many tricks to make it last longer , like the plastic and drainage suggestions below, also put the logs in fire to keep insects out and rot . If you have a lot of rocks in the area , that is the material to use below ground. It's a bit harder but it will last indefinately with a new roof once in a while. Enjoy it , great get away spot.!

      William, how would you suggest managing drainage to prevent a dugout from flooding? Say there was a lot of run off coming down the hill, would you need to use a drainage system similar to the one behind a retaining wall? Would creating a V shaped ridge uphill of the dugout work?

    • @williamburdon6993
      @williamburdon6993 2 роки тому +5

      @@drewlomax7837 If you can start at the top of the ridge, a V shaped trench will work fine , it has to be deep enough to catch the runoff though. If you must start below the top get as far up as you can to start. Then make the top of the /\ higher so the water from above , hits it and is diverted around. a couple of big logs will work.

    Worked around many log buildings and built some . Also wood fences .
    You’ve done some hard work here but if you want to make it to last for a time , always keep the earth alway or from contacting the logs like running plastic sheeting over the exterior logs before back filling and maybe putting some rocks or gravel at the bottom of the post holes to allow for drainage and slow down decomposing of posts .
    Good luck and have fun . Just notice some type of sheeting, good 👍

      Agree, gravel under would be good.. But a nearby source, and way to transport, the gravel would be handy too, lol.. Don't see no bucket loader in the video, lol..
      Realistically, drainage looks good on that slope, and this one would last long enough to be worthwhile, many years before it rots.. Then just build another!

      A lot of these dug outs will last decades if done right. The main thing is to shed water away from them in the the form of a large roof with large overhangs so to speak. For example if you dig out a 10x 10 area then a 16x16 tarp is more than enough to keep water from soaking in to the ground near the dug out. The roof needs to have a slope that can allow for this larger angle. Once done you can then cover with about 6 inches to 1 foot of dirt keeping the slope in mind to not allow water to pool near the dug out. There are a number of dug out styles and you can see some with sky lights and windows.
      Ideally you want to be at least 2/3 of your body height in the ground and 1/3 above to allow for enough slope. Think hip type roof. The deeper you are in the dug out the more stable the temperature will be with out the need for heat. For example if the ground temp is stable at 50F then a deep dug out should be 50F even at the coldest time of the year provided you have a thick roof and insulated exposed walls.

    У тебя сухой и сыпучий грунт. Дождевая вода, талый снег создадут проблемы. Обязательно нужно изолировать внешние стороны конструкции . Гидроизоляционные материалы следует укладывать с внешней стороны конструкции, а также на полу дома. Чтобы увеличить прочность крыши, ее несущую конструкцию лучше всего смонтировать в виде стропильной системы с частым размещением стропил и дощатым накатом. Дверь сначала монтируется в раму, а потом уже рама с дверью устанавливается в жилище. Пол - бревенчатый накат и сверху дощатый настил с обязательной гидроизоляцией. 12 лет жил в тайге, построил 4 землянки и 2 капитальных зимовья, т.ч. кое что в этом понимаю. Как заметил мой товарищ, всё больше людей селятся ближе к природе, в землянки ... наверное скоро перекочуют в пещеры ... 🤣

    Loved the build but I would suggest getting a splitting wedge and a 10lb long handled mall/sledgehammer to split your wood. Longer handle means more strike force from your arm swing. Lots of great work you did and very inventive. Congrats on a fantastic project.

    I see so many people on these types of videos digging with those little spades or little shovels, if you use a proper fencing spade it's faster and not half as hard on the body with all the bending ,I know this because i have been using spades and shovels for a job most of my adult life,and they're not that hard to Carry. Just a suggestion and I do appreciate your videos.

    Now that I've watched so many of these and know what kind of work goes into building one. What absolutely blows me away is the filming of building one. Think about how many times he had to go ahead and set the camera up, just to walk past it. Then walk to the cabin to set up a camera to record him showing up. It's basically like doing everything 3 or 4 times over. I sit and watch all the hard work like I'm right there and gonna do it myself. I barely scraped up enough get up and go to take a shower a few hours ago.
