When chopping kindling, instead of relying on moving your hand away fast enough and risking an injury alone in the forest, cut pieces as long as your hatchet, hold one end of the wood in your hand with the handle and the other end against the blade. Then hit the blade and piece of wood against the chopping block, splitting it in half down the middle. I hope I explained it well enough for you to understand.
