With a rope starter? I had a single cylinder Renault diesel 6.5 HP in my sailboat. To start it with rope was not easy. Took me a bit to figure out how to start it. Had to get above it and bring piston up to where it just started the compression stroke and then use all the strength if your back and arms to pull it through the compression stroke. It would start as it spun through the next compression stroke.
It did not have a compression release valve on it.

A 24volt starter? Is that a misprint? About the only diesel I can think of that has a 24 volt starter is a old cucv with the 6.2 Detroit

IIRC they're out of generators used by the army .. I have one as well, 24V alright.

Most diesels start on 24 volt I have a 6.2 (GM), 6.5 (GM) and two 7.3 IDI (FORD) diesels that do.
