Great interview, very honest and likable guys - one thing is a résumé, but if I’d hire composers for a project I’d definitely argue that their infectious engagement is a big perk.

These guys are super in tune with each other and sharp as tacks. Making art is trying good idea after good idea, throwing them away without a care, until at last you have the set of good ideas that actually work.

Really insightful interview! There's something they said about the filmmaking and problem-solving process that reminds me of something John Powell said, that he's not so much a composer as much as he is a filmmaker in charge of music. They have to try and solve these narrative problems using the music and know where to go based on the directors feedback. That's their branch of the storytelling.

Absolutely agree on that! While understanding, reading and feeling a scene, finding the right objective emotional or spherical angle is key to start with. The first basic problem to solve indeed! Like Einstein said: “If I had an hour to solve a problem I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and five minutes thinking about solutions.”...
Otherwise a lot of time and energy is lost by working out a wrong idea. That's a good reason to watch interviews with movie directors, to get more of a grip on certain jargon and insights. So, how to train your emotional and spherical antennas? ;-)

@@jeffhijlkemaExactly. Powell also says sometimes he has to write a negative amount of minutes of music per day because he realizes what he already wrote isn’t working. That Einstein method might help to prevent that issue. Of course, sometimes you just have to get something down!

The music is amazing! Just the way they use it in the film.
